The Tale of Despereaux

by Kate Dicamillo

This book is a good book for 9 to 13 year olds. The main characters are Despereaux, Princess Pea, the servant girl and the evil rat. Despereaux is a small mouse who falls in love with the HUMAN princess.

My 4th grade teacher read it to us. I LOVED IT!!!!! I liked it that Desperaux was so bold and full of courage at all times. I also liked that they made soup at the end.

A lovely and whimsical piece from Kate DiCamillo. Nothing like the movie AT ALL.

DiCamillo has a way of presenting complicated truths in an intruging and comprehensive fashion.

An example of this is the fact that Roscuro, the rat, does not really get a happy ending.

He ends up belonging to neither the Light nor the Dark- a very realistic state of events that makes one think.

I would highly recommend this, and any other works by DiCamillo (from what I have read from her) :)

Short but very good. I liked this book because it shows that nothing is black and white or good and evil, everyone in the story is real and multi-dimmentional.
