Twilight

by Stephenie Meyer

It's a really good story about loving somone no matter how different you are from each other. It's not just a love story, it's really good. It'ss up there with Romeo and Juliet for romance.

I also loved this book- I got sucked in immediately. However, I found some of it a bit shallow, and the characters didn't seem as deep as in other books. Still, it was a great book.

Ha, today at the store, we were walking through an aisle with the DVDs of Twilight, and I think I had an allergic reaction, because I started feeling all feverish and claustrophobic. Very van-like, come to think of it. ;)

Well... at least Jacob has a *personality*... I'm guessing that was a mistake on Smeyer's part, seeing as she tries so hard to make her characters flat and dull.

I shall be very frank and honest, though I feel no remorse if I come across as cynical. I am a Harry Potter fan and always will be. I resent the fans of the saga because of a very certain incidence when Twilight took a Harry Potter movie release to a date six months later than it was meant to be. Unfortunately for those who like Twilight, I am still angry. (Irrational, I know. But Harry Potter is so much better because it has a plot, relatively realistic character personalities, and excellent writting. Not just some supossedly hot vampire.) This is not the only reason.

Seven Reasons (Two Irrational, Five Rational) To Be ______ (insert negative adjective of choice, such as scornful or mocking) about The Twilight Saga:

1. I blame Twilight for the infestation of teen liturature with vampire themed novels. (Honestly, I read a book when it doesn't mention a vampire romance on the back and that has signifigantly cut down my reading material. Grrrrr.....)

2. From what I have heard, Twilight is one of those books that might have been a good idea, but was ruined by mediocre writing.

3. Everyone is so busy reading and raving about Twilight that they have forgoten that other books and topics do exist. I am sick and tired of everyone being mesmerized by one series and forgeting the others. (Small apology to the people who think I am completely obsested with Harry Potter. I'm not.)

4. Too much romance in a book makes it way to mushy and really boring for anyone who likes some level of action or decent writing. Twilight is a romance series, something that, in my opinion, should not exist. Excessive romance is ridiculous in one book much less...how many are there now?

5. Stupid tee-shirts. Fur or fangs, my foot....

6. The afformentioned movie release incident, which coincided with several incidents involving Twilight obsessed peers at school raving endlessly about the movie that shouldn't have come out then.

7. Reviews written by the people who woreship Edward/Jacob that include no details on the actual books, continuously compare it to Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare is tossing and turning in his grave, humiliated by the assosiation!), and repeatedly use the words awesome or love. I do not mean to offend you, Katie D. Yours wasn't that bad; this is more about other ones that I have read.

If you have made it to the end of my rant, congratulations! Sorry it was a little long.

I have not read Twilight. I have no desire to. I find the obsession with Twilight, and especially with Edward and/or Jacob, to be really, really weird, and kind of creepy.

I agree with a lot of Ellie's points, notably the one about the infestation of teen literature with vampire romance. I mean, I barely even bother going into the YA section anymore because I know what it's all going to be, and it's something I have less than zero interest in. Even the covers are all the same!

I also agree with you about reviews of Twilight. A lot of them, also, have very poor spelling, grammar, and capitiization, as well as an overabundance of exclamation points. I'm sorry, but when you write incorrectly, you make me less inclined to respect you and listen to what you have to say. It also -- and maybe this is irrational -- brings down my respect for the book itself.

I'll just repost something I posted somewhere else, because it will probably never get read there...(on Twilight)

Not everyone is in love with vampires and girls getting married before it's legal.

>=( Okay, I admit it. I haven't read it.  My mom read the first one and she said it was good.  Not fantastic, not worthy of worship, just good.  The whole Twilight thing is just annoying.  I don't want to be seen reading it, or even holding it.  It just sounds... bad.  How It could be claimed to be the best book ever is beyond me.  It's like High School Musical.  Everyone loved it, and I saw it, and I was like 'this is NOT worthy of all that fuss'.  I bet something similar will happen IF I ever read Twilight.  I just want to read it because I want to know what all this fuss is about and be able to give arguments about why it is bad.

Oh, yeah, and all of those Edward fangirls out there.... Edward is not 'hot' because he does not exist. End of question. Would you want a boyfriend who stalks you, abuses you, and sounds all-around creepy? Nooo-ooo.  I guess you could call me somewhat 'Antwi', if I say so myself.  (Antwi= anti Twilight)

I may read it, just to have something to make fun of. =)

And don't go all 'oh you'll LOVE it' on me.  I'll probably not.

Anyways, I agree with the infestation of teen literature with vampires.  And romance.  Almost every book in the YA section is romance or even a slightly lewd title.

1.  Yup.  I agree with that.  Romance is also taking over (Nooooo!).

2.  I haven't read it, but that is what it seems like.

3.  I think I once knew a girl who dyed her hair because of Twilight...

4.  I dislike excessive mushyness.  Especially underdeveloped mushyness.  It's like, I want the characters to be friends and to know each other before they get married...

5.  Haven't seen a shirt, thank goodness!

6. I didn't really notice that... When was it?

7. I agree.  Everyone is like, I like Twilight because Edward is hot! No way.  You should not trust a teen on a hormonal rampage's opinion on how hot someone is.  How do you peiople really like the book?

Romance is fine, but not as the point of a book. The romance in Harry Potter, for instance, was very well handled.

Though I don't like Twilight (as you all know), I'm inclined to disagree about YA vamp romance, and YA romance in general.

Though it's obviously silly to write about fifteen-year-old girls finding the love of their lives thirty seconds after meeting a guy, you can't deny that in a lot of YA books romance or relationships of some kind is going to be a focal point. That's because it's what's going to make the biggest market--- relationships are just something that teens think about, end of story.

Vamp romance is the current fad, which is too bad, because that makes it look bad. But if it's written well, it's not always cliche and annoying. We shouldn't be trashing vamp romance and making generalizations that it's all bad, we should be saying that, like anything, it can be written badly. If it is written badly, it can be disastrous, but some people can do it very well.

Of course, because vamp romance is so popular right now, a bunch of washed-up thirty-year-olds living with a half dozen cats are starting to write vamp romance. DBP if you get Smeyer to blurb it. And because it's what will make money right now, it gets published. I guarantee you, if the fad was something like, say, steampunk or Necromancy, half of the vamp romance you see in the YA section wouldn't be there.

However, vamp romance is not all bad. If you look hard, you can find good vampire fiction, and within it good vamp romance. True, it's very hard to revamp (sorry...) the storyline of a regular girl falling in love with a vampire and having her life changed. But some people can do it. In fact, it doesn't have to be a legitimate book--- there are short stories, fanfics, movies/tv shows, etc.

Anyone who condemns all vamp fiction/romance should take a harder look; just because the mainstream is bad doesn't mean that all the water is tainted.

Right, Vampire romances go way back! -Admin

Good points, ML. It's just that it frustrates me that when something like this is popular, it becomes all that's available.
