Ruby in the Smoke begins with our heroine Sally Lockhart, killing a man.  After the shocking event, Sally is drawn into an exciting mystery involving a valuable jewel and evil smugglers.  Set in a creepy Victorian London, Sally makes friends and enemies.  I really enjoyed this book written by the masterful storyteller, Philip Pullman, author of The Golden Compass.  Ruby in the Smoke is a must read for everyone who likes a good mystery.
