Darkwing

by Kenneth Oppel

Darkwing is about about prehistoric bats called chiropters. One of the chiropters, Dusk, unlike the others, can fly instead of just gliding down like the other chiropters. When his colony is driven from their home, they go on a troubled journey as Dusk finds out what he really is.

Another character, a creature called a felid, is also part of  the story. He is one of the first predator felids.

Read this great book about evolution! You won't regret it!

*gasp* Felid? Don't tell anyone what that means! They might guess the answer to my impossible riddle!! *realizes how odd this is beginning to look* Sorry. It's a CB thing... DtE specifically, if you even know what that means...

Sorry. Back to the book. I confess never to have read it, but I read Silverwing. I disliked it. It was extremely anthropomorphic, the MC was a Stu,  it was cliche, promoting steriotypes (why does everyone have to portray vampire bats as evil?! They're really not so bad!), and, well, you get the point. Not to mention the names. They were names bats couldn't even pronounce, many descending from from words in human languages (which is usually great, but not with bats. There, it makes no sense.
