Howl's Moving Castle

by Diana Wynne Jones

Sophie Hatter had always expected to live a normal, if somewhat boring, life working in her late father's hat shop in the land of Ingary. But when the evil and powerful Witch of the Waste accuses Sophie of apposing her and turns her into an old lady, she is forced to leave the shop to seek her fortune, something she never expected to do. She soon finds refuge in Wizard Howl's moving castle. It is rumored that the wizard eats young girls' hearts and steals their souls, but Sophie soon learns that he's just a self-centered, cowardly "slither-outter" with a talent for magic who's trying to avoid the Witch's curse and a king who is determined to make him his Royal Wizard. Sophie and Howl, along with his apprentice, Michael, and fire demon, Calcifer, they embark on a series of hijinks that involve green slime, seven-league boots, a very persistent scarecrow, weed-killer, Wales, a poem that doubles as curse, and a contract that could very well be the end of Howl and Calcifer.

Hmmm... It seems that there are a lot of books like that for me.  I was the one that inspired someone to read cat warriors!  At least, that's how I remember it...

I fully agree with you! This is an awesome book! So is House of Many Ways. I also like The Chronicles of Chrestomanci by the same author. I don't really like the movie Howl's Moving Castle though.
