THE ELEMENTI CHRONICLES BOOK I: THE STONE OF SERENITY

Chapter I
___{:}___

The moonlight shone on the Lake's deep, fuchsia waters. Conifer trees fringed it, thickening into foreboding woods. The Lake was the center of the Faimón Forest, and it contained a great amount of magic. Its surface was smooth, undisturbed. All seemed well, yet it was not. A wild cry broke the peaceful silence. A shape tumbled down a path through the trees. Another shape hared after the first, who had a jagged gash down its side. "Tell me where it is and we can save a lot of trouble," the second animal growled. "Never! Never in my life!" the first cried, practically wailing. "Then I guess the information will die with you!" The second figure struck the first, shoving it into the Lake. After a while, its head bobbed up, gasping for air. "We. . . . won't. . . tell you! You'll never. . . find. . . . it. . . " The second animal chuckled quietly to itself. "And who's going to stop me?" It padded silently away into the trees.
__________
Sheena opened her eyes. Squinting through the thick water, she searched for the surface. She couldn't tell which way was which in the murky fuchsia water of the Lake, heavy with magic. It was the one body of water that Aquinas leopards couldn't swim skillfully in. There! A pinpoint of moonlight shone through the water. Sheena kicked strongly towards it, propelling herself through the Lake to that shaft of light. She could feel her breath slipping away. Just as she thought she would black out, her muzzle broke the surface. Sheena gasped for air, the gash Narwhal had given her stinging. She paddled for the shore, tail boosting her forward. The leopard reached the sandy beach and heaved herself up onto it. She shook her royal blue pelt out, shuddering.
Sheena knew that the Knowledge Protector would be proud. She would not reveal the Stone's location to anyone, especially not Narwhal, even if it cost her her life. The Aquai Leopards were the guardians of the Stone of Serenity and were part of the Elementi Leopards, along with the Ignis, Ventus, Aether, and Terra Leopards. Each kept a Stone of Harmony, like the Honesty Stone and the Joy Stone.
Each cult of Leopards selected one of their kind to keep all of said cult's lore, the Knowledge Protector. The tales and secrets of each cult were passed down through generations of Protectors. Sheena was training as the Apprentice Protector for her cult.
In addition to the Leopards in the five cults, there were Leopards that abandoned their birth cult and lived as enemies of the Elementi known as Rogues. Rogues banded together, and Narwhal lead his group, which he called the Rens. Narwhal and his group wanted to get everyone in Leovie who opposed the Stones of Harmony to join him, their goal being to capture the Stones, or destroy them, once and for all. Sheena didn't know what would happen if all balance in Leovie was destroyed, and she didn't really want to find out.
Lying on the shore now, gasping for breath, Sheena recounted the day she'd been selected for Apprenticeship by the Knowledge Protector, Ciel. . . .

Scylla- this is wonderful! Wow! You are so creative! Do "Aquai" "Aether" "Terra" etc. stand for the Elements? (Water, Air, Earth etc.)

Keep right on writing- this is beautiful! I will DEFINITELY be coming back! :D

Yes, they do, actually! All but Aether are Latin terms for the four original elements.

That is exquisite!!!!!!

Aether is what the Ancients thought the stars were made of, right? So- Fire, Earth, Water, Air and Stellar Ethereal Substance! I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Yeah, I thought the Aether bit would represent magic, celestial, light bearing, silvery, etc. Writing a book's really fun, and I enjoy it! I'm glad I could write something so pleasing to you. I'm hoping to get this published!

Also, I'm changing Rogues in the story to Ferals. It sounds more original.

I'm glad too, Scylla! And I think you've got a good chance of getting published -- this, in my experience, is exactly the sort of thing people like.

And I agree- that does sound more original and cat-like :)

CAPTCHA says boop- I think that's a word. Doesn't it mean to poke something????

Funny, I was actually doing something similar to that (not here though). Users of Earth were Terras, a user of water was an Aestus (latin word for tide), a user of fire was an Ignis (flame), and a user of air was a Ventus (wind).

Chapter 1 (continued)

________
The Aquai Leopards were gathered at the Meeting Pool, with their leader, Aqua, and the Knowledge Protector, Ciel, sitting facing them at the other side. Sheena sat tucked into her mother's paws, wondering what the meeting could possibly be for. Ciel cleared his throat, and Aqua stepped aside to let him speak. "As you must know," Ciel began, voice ringing clear over the crowd. "I won't around forever, and I must select an Apprentice to continue the legacy of the Knowledge Protectors." Collective gasps rose from the Leopards, and Sheena felt excitement thrumming through her small frame. Ciel quieted them with a swish from his deep blue tail. "I have chosen Sheena Leaf-Spots as my successor. She's proven herself to be quick-witted and eager to learn. She will train with me, and in turn, ttf train the next Protector. This is my decision." Ciel bowed his head, the ceremony completed. Eyes glowing, Sheena's mother nudged her cub forward to him. Sheena could hardly keep from running as she padded over to touch noses with Ciel. The Aquai Leopards wove around Sheena, murmuring congratulations. Their varying blue pelts rippled together, giving the appearance of a shifting sea. Sheena's mother looked as though she'd burst with pride. Ciel beckoned to Sheena with his tail. She broke free from her cult and followed, the other leopards hanging respectfully back. Ciel led Sheena to his den. "Come with me, young one. We will begin your training."

Sheena had already learned so much, and she couldn't let someone like Narwhal pry that information out of her, or kill her, for that matter. Narwhal had once been her best friend, but one day. . . he turned. Sheena hated to remember the day where he'd become bitter, offering to make her the Queen of the Ferals. Horrified that he'd betray the Aquai, she had declined the offer, and thus broke their friendship. Narwhal had disappeared that night and Sheena was left to explain his disappearance to the cult. Her affection for Narwhal had been replaced with burning hate. How could he even do what he had done? Did loyalty mean anything to him? He had, in his actions, betrayed all the Elementi Leopard cults. And Ciel would've made Narwhal his Apprentice. Thank the Neverending that Narwhal had left before Ciel could do that. . .
Sheena couldn't waste any more time. She trotted briskly up the path in the Faimón Forest to the Aqua Camp.

Chapter II

• • •
The next morning at camp, Sheena related her encounter with Narwhal. Her gash had not yet healed, and the Healer had put a poultice of forest herbs on it. They stung, but Sheena's face didn't show it. The leopards remembered when she told them about Narwhal's betrayal, so weren't so surprised when they heard about this latest tale. They knew he was bitter, but didn't even suspect that the goal of his Ferals was to steal the Stones. Ciel immediately decided to lay more magical protection on the Stone of Serenity. The rest of the Aquai agreed, and Sheena and Ciel would set out to do that on the night after the cult meeting was over. Aqua sent messengers out to each cult's territory to call the Gathering. She reasoned that the other cults would need to know about Narwhal's deadly ambition and protect their Stones. Sheena had never seen a leopard from another cult and was excited. The other Aquai were anxious, pacing the cult's camp. Sheena, along with many others, was wondering what would happen if Narwhal succeeded in his plans. . . .
• • •
The day passed uneventfully. Ciel opted not to travel to the Stone of Serenity until the night after the Gathering. Sheena eagerly awaited seeing such powerful magic at work. She was even more excited at the prospect of seeing what other Leopard cults'members looked like. Ciel told her there wasn't much to see, but that didn't dampen her spirits. She trotted over to join a group of the cult's Apprentices. They were huddled together, bristling with apprehension at the coming meeting when Sheena joined them. "Hey, Sheena," Dawn greeted her."Hi, Dawn, Conifer, Minnow, Xiang,"she addressed each of them. Dawn, Minnow, and Conifer looked about ready to burst with excitement.. Xiang was a more experienced Apprentice, about to become a full member of the Aqua cult. He'd been to a gathering before. "Xiang, tell us about the other cults!" Minnow begged. "Yes, please," Conifer added. Xiang chuckled.  "Alright," he conceded. Sheena gathered in a circle around him as he began his story.
