Chatterbox: Blab About Books

The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer
I'm reading this....

I'm reading this. It's been pretty good so far! Anybody else read it? No spoilers please! If you haven't read it, here's a quick summary:

ATTENTION: SPOILERS!

Alex and Conner Bailey have always loved reading fairytales with their dad and grandma out of her special Land of Stories book. But after their dad dies in a car wreck, they've been having a rough financial time. But when grandma comes for a surprise visit on the twin's birthday, she gives them her treasured book as a birthday gift. That night, Alex notices the book is glowing and buzzing. She spends the next week trying to figure out why this is happening. She discovers that when she opens the book, she can drop things on it and they will sink into the glowing pages. After Conner finds out about the magical book at school, he knows Alex will try to go into the book herself. He knows he has to stop her, but when he runs home from school, Alex has already put her arm in up to her elbow. When Conner bursts into her room, she gets startled and falls headfirst into the book, and Conner jumps in after her. They find themselves in another world: The Land of Stories.

That's about all I've read. So far, I'd give this book a 3 1/2 to 4 star rating out of five.

It's been pretty good so far...not my favorite book ever, but interesting enough to keep me turning pages. I think Alex (one of the MCs) is a bit of a Mary Sue...Conner is sort of a Gary Stu, but in a different way. They aren't that original. And the first part of the story is kinda depressing. But once t gets to a certain point in the book that gets better. So, pretty good so far, but maybe a teensy but young for me, idk. Hope you like it! By the way, the first book is called the Wishing Spell.

I read the first three books, and I thought they were pretty OK. The second one was my favorite, and the first one was pretty good, but I HATED the third one. Once you read it, you'll know what I mean.

I think the whole 'put new spins on classic fairy tales' thing has been done to death by now. Ever After High, Descendants, and a million books trying to put some kind of feminist spin on them. I would prefer new worlds and new ideas over another reimaginig, unless that reimaging has something interesting to say, and I think they rarely do.
