Has anyone read The Giver graphic novel?

SPOILER ALERT

I just did and the ending was disappointing. It made it seem as if Jonas and Gabe died, but they didn't in the book!

I didn't even know there was one, though I've both read the book and seen the movie. What's the art like?

In a lot of the interpertations of the book they consider the end symbolism of Jonas and Gabe dying.  It's supposed to be either, if I remember what I heard from the author (ie. your choice as the readers, so why the graphic novel wouldn't leave it that way doesn't make any sense).

I always thought they made it personally!  I couldn't tell when it was supposed to have switched to symbolism/hallucinations.

Hi, I'm new, this is my first comment! but anyway - when I saw this thread I had to comment because I love The Giver so much. I always thought that Gabe and Jonas made it because I thought the light they saw was from another community. It never even occured to me that they might have died. Also, the last book in the series is all about Gabe, so he couldn't have died. Do some people really think the end is a metaphor for death?

Hi there!  I'm new too!

Yeah, there was a discussion before the series was continued.  Lois Lowry encouraged debate about the ending at that point, so it did have merit when there was still a question.  I can definitely see the point, after all,  "going into the light" is one of the most-used synbols for dying.

I was incredulous when I heard that that was a possibility, so I'm kind of glad that it was resolved!

oh - that makes so much more sense. I'm glad Lois Lowry added the other books so now we all know for certain that Gabe and Jonas made it. If you havn't read the rest of the sieres I highly recomed them, especialy the last one, Son.

I haven't read the later books, but SPOILER ALERT:

Jonas ls alive in the sequels, so it seems like Lois Lowry thought that he stayed alive.
