First Sentence Contest...

First Sentence Contest

This is an idea I came up with in an attempt to help revive BaB!

I will provide a summary of an invented book (it doesn't have to be actually written, just a book idea -- and it cannot be an already published book).  Then you will post a sentence that you think would make a good first sentence for the book.

Remember, first sentences are very important.  It's what pulls you in and keeps you reading.  Books with good first sentences are usually very good.

Deadline is October 16.  I will judge on the 17.  Whoever wins first place will be the next judge.  If you win first place and would rather not judge please tell me and the role of judge will go to the second place winner.

Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions!  I look forward to reading your first sentences.

Story Summary:

Humans have finally landed on Mars.  The human habitat is encased in domes of transparent material.  Drones big enough to transport people fly around, hovering above the surface of Mars. Contact with Earth is strong and extremely important.  Everything is going well, until contact with Earth ceases.  No one knows why and things are tense.  When one of the transparent domes start leaking the precious air into the Mars atmosphere the tenseness escalates at an alarming pace. There isn't enough oxygen and supplies to share with others for long.  Groups of humans turn against other groups.  Everyone is blaming another and nothing towards fixing the problems is being done.  Sevianna -- a young girl born on Mars who has never seen or set foot on Earth -- realizes that something must be done.  The adults aren't doing anything, so she gathers the other Martian children.  Together they must save the human habitat and reconnect with Earth.  It is a daunting task and many children give up.  Soon only Sevianna and three other children are left trying to fix the problems.  Can so few do it?  Or are they doomed with the rest of the humans on Mars?

Sorry for the late prompt, I didn't see this!

Julie recently moved to a new boarding school. On the first day, she ends up joining the Misfit's Society, a club with only three members. Nicholas, who can't remember the smallest things, David, who has to be the best at everything, and her. One night, while intentionally breaking curfew, Julie plants a lemon tree in the soil outside her dormitory window. The next morning, the lemon tree has crawled up the walls of the building and taken over the campus.

The sunrise on the third of September was beautiful, as the rising sun was illuminating the snow-capped mountains that stood tall around the boarding school, and gold streaks adorned the dusty rose sky. Unfortunately, a small girl named Julie was the only person able to admire this sunrise, because everyone else in the school had woken up to a thick mat of branches, leaves, and the occasional lemon concealing their windows.

"What are we going to do with all these lemons-" David hissed, digging his nails into Julie's arms. Weakly, she replied, "Make lemonade?"

Sorry, I'd like to revise:

"But- The lemons- What are we going to DO with them?" David cried, pacing around the dorm.  Julie replied, "I dunno... Make lemonade?"

I didn't know the lemon tree would do what it did when I planted it.

I mean, the lemons were yummy. Though they had some strange side effects.

How is one supposed to respond when they wake up to see that everything has gone wrong, and it's all their fault?

The light shone into the dormitory blinding the trio. The plump golden lemons hung from branches, dangling in the morning sun. Julia stared at the beautiful sight but frowned. She didn't mean to plant a tree that crawled up the building and surrounded it like a monster holding a child almost ready to devour it. Julia tried to run outside to chop it down, but bumped into the Head Master. "What are you doing up this early?" he boomed. "I-I was just checking to see if you were awake!" Julia faked a smile and her mangled teeth showed. "Very well," he answered. "But let me check your dormitory." Julia rushed in before the master, attempting to hide the hideous tree. She grabbed the curtains and pulled them shut, then leaped in frontof it trying not to show the evidence.

The sunlight streamed in through openings in something, which was weird, because usually it hit me full blast, with nothing blocking the window. I forced my eyes open and noticed leaves and stems, and a horrific thought came to my mind-the lemon plant.

"When life gives you lemons, make lemonade," was the quote that hung on the headmaster's door. It was weirdly appropriate for the situation, but I hoped the headmaster actually knew how to make lemonade with all these lemons, because I certainly didn't.

Here's a new storyline:

Never once has Asher seen the sun. Living in a deserted underground lab, he only comes out at night, when the Beasts are gone. Asher cant risk being found by the Beasts- they would take him to the Ship, the great floating city where the former citizens of Earth are kept, away from their ruined planet. Asher survives off wits, scavenged food, and history books. He lives peacefully for thirteen years, until his fifteenth birthday... when everything goes wrong. The Beasts are there, but at night, and Asher is taken into custody. On the Ship, he is tested and examined until the scientists find no more use for him. He is thrown into the prison, where he finds another boy... He won't reveal his name, but Asher makes a friend in the futuristic dungeon. They make plans to escape and one day, they make a move. Asher and the boy board an escape pod and set a course for Earth- only to see it blow up. Far away from the Ship, without a planet in sight, they have to find a way to survive.

Is this what the sun looks like, an explosion of light and heat? That's not what I thought it would look like, that's not what they said it would look like- that's not the sun, is it...
