Why hello, my

Chatterbox: Blab About Books

Book Narrators: The best and worst.
Why hello, my...

Why hello, my Chatterboxian Friends! It is I, your narrator, here upon the winds of chance. Or... No, that's not correct... Hm.

"The narrator had heard that there was an attempt to revive BaB and arrived, book in hand, to read tales of this new movement." Better. Much Better. There... Ah. As I am the only one in this post, I shall take the liberty of making the narrator's font much more legible for your eyes.

Much better.

This thread is about narrators! Wise and small, large and tall narrators... But mostly book narrators! The way an individual narrates can change how the story, movie, or medium is consumed; for example, The Princess Bride would be far different without its use of narration.

The narrator can also be the protagonist; first-person books often use this tactic. Third-person books with a clear protagonist do as well; Inkheart is a great example of this. It's written in third person, but we, the reader, know who the protagonist is, and that they are narrating. For example; we see many of Maggey's thoughts in Inkheart as she narrates. Great Expectations is also a book where the protagonist narrates (this time, from first person).

Books can be made legendary by their narrator, or ruined by sloppy narrating (despite how interesting the premise might have been!). What is the narration like in your favorite books? Have you read a book with terrible narration? Who are some of your favorite narrators?

Go forth, my...er... My Chatterboxers, and write!

I agree with that! Especially when the narrator makes little quips about Team Rocket or something at the end of the episode. It's an unexpected but whole part of Pokemon.

Thank you, N33. My thoughts exactly, for once. (Excuse me?)

A narrator I would say is bad is Mulch in the Artemis Fowl remake movie--he functions to tell us character's traits, instead of us actually getting to see characters use those traits. It's a bit odd; they just use their narrator as a Bandaid fix for terrible characterization.

I love books with switching perspectives. In most Jodi Picoult books (BTW-she writes adult books that aren't always suitable for young kids, so ask your parents before reading any of the ones I'm about to mention) the marration switches from character to character, revealing out what has to be known and then stopping to add some suspense. Handle with Care is written from 2nd person switching narration and Small, Great Things switches between 3(?) characters.

Another book that switches perspective is my younger sister's favorite book, Katt vs. Dogg. So if you are a younger kid you wants to read a book like I've described, I'd read that.

oOOh, I know this is for book narrators, but I seem to remember movie narrators much more clearly XD if you compare mean girls and mean girls's sequel, you can clearly tell that Lindsey Lohan is a much better narrator than the person in the second movie.

For me, the only reason I could read A Tale of Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz (it's somewhat scary) is because the narrator made it really funny! (I do suggest the book). I think there was another book I read where I really liked the narrator, but I can't remember the book title. Was it something like The Book Theif? It was about a boy, who loved reading in this library, but he sometimes stole a few really old books that no one ever looked for, and then he went to return them, but the library shut down. Also, there were these 2 grown-ups wanting one of those books, so they tried to take it from his mind. Yeah, that probably doesn't help.
