Somewhere while Chasing

Chatterbox: Chirp at Cricket

Somewhere while Chasing

Somewhere while Chasing Vermeer on a silent and still night, an incredibly frigid aqua aguana crept towards a the faint warmth emanating from a large structure, not far in the distance. A slim beam of light shown through the door, distinctly yellow in comparison to the luminous moon looming up above. The aguana timidly inched its way past an alluring spectrum of light cast through a glass prism with the name "Alice" engraved into its smooth clear surface. As is squeezed past, and through the miniscule entrance, her attention was captured by an unfamiliar aroma. Scurrying into an obscure corner, she glimpsed a large ornately decorated sign reading "Super Jwyn's Bakery." Suddenly she saw it. Next to a large pot of Lobster Bisque, a tray filled with an an assortment of various cookies. After cautiously scanning her new environment for potential threats, she scuttled over to the cooling rack, snatching a single chocolate chip cookie and slinking off, back into the freezing night... The game was afoot!

As Kitten distracts herself quite suitably for my taste, metaphorizing, Jaybells swoops down, using the elite power of stickynotes and a very particular vibrant purple shade of pen... but within seconds she suddenly halts in her tracks, catching herself by a millimeter. Wait... wasn't the designated cookie a chocolate chip cookie? From the long forgotten Bakery of SuperJwyn? Why exactly was she holding a "Unicorn" cookie? Arghh... this must be a clever diversion tactic, she thought, disimisively tossing the cookie over her shoulder.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you."

Suddenly she heard the oh-so familiar, almost smug, and definantly triumphant, voice that she had so accustomed herself to. Of course. Of course, he just had to be here. Jaybells turned, expectantly, to the small boy of about 7, with dark bangs perfectly outlining his large violet-blue eyes.

"What do you want?" she muttered, glaring at him. Standing there, figure perfectly complimented by the moon's hazy beams, Conan glanced up at her, smirking. His miniature dark-almost-navy blue suit, the signature bright red bow-tie atop that blank white shirt, and especially way his thick black glasses reflected the moonlight before looking back up at her - she could hardly bear it.

"If my deduction is correct, then you would be a particpant of the CB cookie catch, right?" He said, not using that innocent, higher-pitched voice anymore. Without letting her respond, he continued, not breaking her gaze. "If that's the case, then you would want to keep that precious cookie, right?"

Jaybells pursed her lips together, retorting quite haughtily, " Yes, of course, I already know that, baka. I was simply trying to...er, confuse the competitors, clearly. It seems you've complicated that, though."

"Soka (I see), is that right?" He chuckled softly, following her as she strode away.

"Yes, and I would appreciate it if you could let me keep up with the rest of the CBers," she said blocking the moon with the cookie, reverting it back into the chocolate chip cookie, all the while keeping up her brisk pace. "I need to stay ahead of them."

"Oy, and leave me alone? How inconsiderate!" he whimpered, higher-pitched voice quivering, yet still obviously a bit forced. Jaybells bit her lip, she wouldn't want to be cruel to him, since he was rather sharp afterall... besides, what good would it do to leave him here? She may as well take him, otherwise it would just come back to bite her later. It wasn't even as if she didn't like him around, though she had to act like it.

She handed the cookie to him, only saying, "Just keep up, kid."

Conan slowly, slyly peered up at her, smirking, once again. "Ah-le-le? Ya' just couldn't resist, huh?"

Jaybells scowled, debating silently in her head. Baka, baka, baka! Taku (geesh), I'm in the middle of a catch the cookie event, demo (but) I have to deal with this? Oy, why must I do this to myself? she continued, contemplating various ways to keep the cookie, as well.

"Jaybells? Are you Okay?" Conan asked innocently, piercing into Jaybells' rather nefarious plans and quite frankly, her thought process, overall.

"Yes, of course." She replied, suddenly on guard, and rather suspicious, wondering why Conan suddenly was concerned.

"Ano(Umm)... I can hear something in the distance." He informed her, sounding rather unsettled, himself.

And for good reason, for Edogawa Conan had never seen, or experienced, for that matter, a stampede of determined Chatter-Boxers before. This would be an experience that would forever reshape his life... but perhaps even more importantly, he soon realised that the cookie was gone, taken by...

Me! As Ella-Belle break out in a sprint, just a bit behind the others, she gets an idea!

"Expelliarmus!" She shouts, though, quickly loosing the cookie again, "Accio cookie!" With the cookie hurtling towards her, she leapt, just missing it. When she turned, though, she saw that it had dropped into the arms of...

Bella says oyom!

Yes, Bella. This cookie will be very delicious...

Sierra. She had long given up on even trying to tackle her way through the almost vicious crowd of Chatter-Boxers, as her previous attempts had only resulted to no avail. She remembered one of her old friends once saying, that no matter how many times you carried out a task, if performed in the exactly same manner, you should expect no variation in the results. Therefore, Sierra stood there, at the edge of the gathering, just waiting... and this time it worked! She caught the cookie, and promptly cantered off on her hypothetical, spontaneously generated unicorn... until the next changing of hands of the cookie!

At that moment, Jaybells transformed into an enormous purplish-black dragon, scooping Conan up, and letting him climb up and onto her back. As she twirled in the air, a silverish tear-drop shaped scale shimmered besides  each of both of her huge violet eyes, gleaming in the dawn's pale light. As she narrowed her eyes, they flooded into her head... she could hear the thoughts of each and all of the Chatter-Boxers. Oh, no! She thought frantically, searching through the Duat for her pouch of skyfire stone. Hurry, hurry, hurry! Before I accidentally hear someone thinking about one of their SIs!  Near panic, she finally felt something brush by her curved crescent-moon, razor-sharp, half-contractable claws, Got it! She sighed in relief, unintentionally setting some nearby trees on fire. She realized how silent Conan had been and craned her neck to get a clear view of him. He looked shocked, something like disbelieving, very confused, and perhaps like he might cry. She felt a twinge of guilt, putting him through something like this, but shook it off, forcing herself to focus. Okay, cookie... As she scanned the horizon, she spotted Sierra, galloping away with the target. Pulling her star-dappled wings close to her body, she dove, swooping majestically over Sierra, before shooting out of sight again, with, of course, the cookie.

After a while of heavy wing-beating, to create a temporary distance barrier, Jaybells alighted, gracefully circling and landing as softly as she could, before gently prodding Conan off her back and reverting out of her avatar. She turned to face her companion again, who was still quite dumbfounded, and, once again, graspng the cookie.

"Sorry about that," She said glancing at him, then away again, "It must have been pretty shocking, right? I suppose it was pretty sudden, after all-"

"No." She looked up sharply, startled by how firm he sounded, "That was utterly..." She flinched, not knowing exactly what to expect. "That was absolutely... sugoi(amazing)!!!" He said, once again sounding like a 7 year old.

Jaybells could help but grin, "Well then, I suppose we should get going, huh?"

"Yep!" Conan smiled back at her. He could tell that they were going to be slightly more successful this time.

But even though they had a small head-start of an advantage, their victory wouldn't last for long. Another competitor would suddenly take the opportunity to obtain the sacred cookie. That champion would be known as...

Sierra. She had given up trying to wrestle through the group of almost vicious Chatter-Boxers, it wasn't her style, anyway. She had also remembered something of one of her old friends had said, "If you perform a task multiple times, but do not change any of the factors, or variables, you should  not expect any variations." So she instead chose to watch from the edge of the large gathering... and it worked! The long awaited cookie had arrived, and at that moment she was whisked upwards, cantering away, on a highly hypothetical, spontaneously generated unicorn, riding onwards towards the now rising sun... until the next time the cookie changed hands!

A girl of medium height swooped through the sunrise and snatched both the cookie and unicorn from the hands of Sierra. "wheeeee!" She shouted in delight as she prepared to take a giant bite from the cookie while watching the gorgeous sunrise. She gazed into the colorful rays - and felt something whisk by, stealing the cookie form her grasp. She gasped and look up, shielding her eyes from the bright light to see...

Conan! Jaybells smiled, even that glaring reddish-orange rising sun of misfortune couldn't stop them! What a relief... she thought, then just hoped she hadn't jinxed it.

After a while of just running, Jaybells looked over at Conan, who had begun to run out of breath. She gradually ground to a halt, cautiously looking around. Where were the other chatterboxers? Why had there been no attempts to take the cookie? As Jaybells stood pondering this, her companion let out a startled cry.

Whipping around, "What happened? Are you hurt?" She asked, frantically, not exactly sure what was going on.

"The cookie! It dissappeared! But I just had it? Whare do you think it is, Jaybells?" He replied questioningly.

"I knew something was wrong, we shouldn't have let our guard down. Another Chatter-boxer must have taken it while we were distracted." Jaybells sighed, looking back out at the brilliant sunrise. She was right when it first occurred to her, that today was going to be full of misfortune, she thought despairingly. Just like Aisliegh had said...

Momentarily borrowing Zane's invisibility cloak, Ella-Belle quickly locates the cookie. Performing an enclosement charm, she effectively blocks out the other CBers. Now for that boy... she thinks. She very carefully slips up to him and grabs the cookie, but now that her objective has been reached, the temporary charm has shattered! Better get going!

I sneak up behind Ella-Belle, and before she can move, I dart forward, slip the cookies through her fingers, and dash away, leaving a very confused CBer as to where her cookie just went. I glance down at my cookie - only to see that nothings there! I look up and see a shadow slipping through the trees, and I follow stealthily.

While stalking Ella-Belle from a distance, I see Twirlgirl swipe the cookie from her hands. Smiling mischievously, I give her the same treatment, and hastily retreat into the shadows woven through the abnormally mystic forest. Before long, though, I notice, frustrating enough, that the cookie has once again been snatched!

I grin as I swoop down over Luna's head on a vine. I vanish (courtesy of being a Vanisher from KotLC) drop down directly in front of her and grab the cookie right out of her hands. I dart away through the trees, leaving an utterly befuddled Luna as to how her stolen cookie is floating away on its own.

"Oy, oy, judging on the way the cookie is 'floating', it's probably being held by someone in an invisibility cloak or such..." Conan pondered aloud, yet still in a whisper, crouching low in the crook of a tree.

"Well, everything has a logical explanation, right?" Jaybells grinned, quoting one her companion's signature phrases.

"Do you think my deduction is correct, then?" He inquired, frowning slightly.

"I suppose it is fairly reasonable to assume so, but we should be cautious, nonetheless." Came the rather wary reply.

"Wakari mashita( I understand), I'll use my football(soccerball) to stun the culprit, and you can take advantage of that in order to re-obtain that cookie!"

"Sounds like a plausible plan." Jaybells responded, with just a tad of reluctance. She would have preferred a less... violent...(?) approach --- but, alas, this was a Catch the Cookie event. With that, she wished her partner the favour of the odds, and they began to implement the plan.

I smile as I see Jaybells and her partner just carring out their elusive plot to get the cookie. Clever. I don't really bother with such elaborate schemes. I whip out my grappling hook and sieze the precious confection before leaping out of sight.

While they planned to get the cookie, Conan soon noticed a glimmer in the back-reflection of his glasses. When Jaybells saw how distracted he was, giving him a questioning glance. He decided to write to tell her about the figure hidden behind some trees, in his mini-notebook under the disguise of drawing up the plot. As she finished reading it, Conan noticed the gleam in Jaybells' eyes, and that almost mischievous smile that rivaled his own.

"Well then, let's play along, shall we?" She replied in a low voice, still beaming in that subtle sort of way. And with that, they switched the cookie for a decoy, quickly depositing the actual cookie into Conan's pocket. Conan much appreciated that, when Jaybells knocked him to the ground, and a metal grappling hook shot past him, catching the cookie. He glanced over at the tree where the figure had been, but there was no one else in sight. He saw Jaybells, she was forcing a rather bitter smile.

"I suppose it's a good thing that person didn't get the real one, but that person somehow got the spare I had, as well... that means that another person must have an accomplice, or..." She clicked her tongue.

Conan's pupils constricted, "...in other words the second person could only be...."

Jaybells nodded grimly. "It must be."
