Chatterbox: Crowd Sorcery

Sidekick

Sidekick

Sidekicks in great stories come in many shapes and sizes: a jolly traveling companion, a dog or cat, a wise wizard who gives helpful advice, a goldfish in a bowl, a walking stick that talks. A sidekick gives the main character someone to talk to, which allows for dialogue and interaction. With two minds in the story, there’s the possibility for more action, tension, and more unexpected things to happen!

I can imagine Quill, the moonlight girl I mentioned on the Hero and Heroines thread, having a friend, Colin, whom she meets because he goes into the forest at night to gather Silvercaps, special flowers that sprout up when the moon is shining but wither before dawn.

I might write: “During the daytime, when he was not off in the village selling his Silvercaps, Colin tended to sleep inside his favorite hollow tree trunk. So there were usually bits of bark in his unruly dust-colored hair, and sometimes a centipede would crawl out of his pocket or an ant would drop out of his collar. He scratched his head often and smelled like the forest after a rain.”

Now that we have a main character, Fable Thatcher, what sidekick will you imagine for her? A comical friend? A wise mentor? A romantic interest? Will your sidekick even be human? Let your imaginations run wild!

1. Name: Arenosa Moonwood

2. Appearance: Long black hair pulled back into a braid, violet eyes, and dark brown skin like all elves. Wears a pair of light silvery pants and a white shirt. Over the shirt and pants, she wears a grey traveling cloak (hidden in the cloak is a carved elvish knife). Hanging from a belt over her shoulder is a quiver of arrows and a bow.

3. Background: Raised by her peaceful mother, Claire Moonwood, after her father the Great General Tatheo Danal was killed in the ongoing war against the fairies. Her whole life she was brought up being told that fairies are no good, but she doesn't belive it herself. She is the second-in-command of a junior training squadron for the war (every elf must join it, because otherwise she would never have joined), and she was out on a scouting patrol when she lost the rest of her squadron in the fog and found herself in Earthgard.

4. Personality: Doesn't like being told to do things without knowing why she should do the things, good at saying witty things, smart but takes a long time to make up her mind.

5. How is he/she different from others? Unlike the other elves she knows, she doesn't think that the fairies could be capable of vanishing away elves, which is what started the war, and she doesn't think that fighting is the right thing to do.

6. What does he/she most desire or hope for? For the war to end.

7. How is he/she strong? She has very good balance, and can dance across one of the silvery strands that her spider-renheart, Runebark, spins. She can also hear very well, and she can also tell right away whether to trust someone or not. She is very good at climbing trees.

8. How is he/she weak or vulnerable? She couldn't fix something to save her life, and she feels much more at home in the trees than on the ground because she can't run very fast.

9. What does he/she fear most? She hates dying things, and is afraid that the war will go on and on forever and that her mother wll die fighting.

10. Your Crowd Sorcery Sentences: The young elf Arenosa hid behind a large, dead bush. She would much rather have been up in a tree, but there were none that she could see in this strange new land filled with swamps and the occassional thatched house. It was dark and cold, and she wrapped her cloak around herself to keep from getting chilled. The sun rose slowly, and in its glowing light she could see two separate things glowing and shimmering in the sky. One looked like a huge city, elegantly floating above the dense, smoky clouds. Beneath it, she thought she could see smokestacks billowing with grayness, and the occassional glint of sun on metal. The other thing shining in the sky was a brilliant rainbow. It was more solid than any of the few she had seen from her home in the dense foliage of the elvish realms, and it seemed to touch the wet earth somewhere off to her right. At her feet lay an abandoned road, and she turned onto it, wondering what lay at the end of the strange rainbow.

Well, we're the writers of the story. Elves can have anything we want them to have. Smile And anyway, there are so many different stories about elves: they can be exceptionally tall or short; they can be beautiful or ugly; evil or good--it's not like there's only one kind of elf, after all!

You're right, Casey, elves can be all shapes and sizes. But my favorite kind of elf is from my

favorite story by Christopher Paolini. In his books elves are tall, slender, immortal, with super senses and super strength.

Name: Alli Inkwell

Appearence: Black and white Mangcoon cat with green and blue eyes.

Backround: Left behind by her mother when her clan was attacked by coyotes. She lived in a forest trying to survive when Arenosa found her.

Personality: Curious and always alert no matter what.

How is she different from others?: Alli was more of a fighter than a hider like the other cats from her clan.

What does she most desire or hope for?: to one day find her mother and be united with her clan once more.

How is she strong?: Always ready for attack and quick agillity.

How is she weak or vulnerable?: Alli is still depressed about her clan and she wound do anything to get them back..... this could be used as a weakness....

What does she fear most?: Alli is afraid of Arenosa and her whole clan being wiped out in war.

Crowd Sorcery Sentence: Alli Inkwell lay beside Arenosa on a cold and crisp morning, awaiting the prey that would soon be their feast. Alli was freezing as she tried to stay warm, wrapped in Arenosa's cloak. When out of no where, birds, deer, and every woodland creature had seemed to run from the direction of East. There they were. The farries rampaging the forest and all that lived there. The hunt was on.

This character is what I was getting at with all that sneezing on the forbidden road thread...

1. Name

Aloys

2. Appearance

Short, big ears, round ended nose.  In case you hadn't noticed, he's a dwarf.

3. Background

Lives underground under a weed field near a human village with his dwarf colony.  Popped up out of the hole one day and saw a eighteen year old boy with long hair looking very lost, presently became attached to said boy.  (Intended to be Cerdic on the hero thread, but can be anyone.  Or no one.)

4. Personality

Very cheery.  Sneezes a lot due to no reason.

5. How is he/she different from others?

Has always wondered about the outside, while everyone else is content with staying underground.

6. What does he/she most desire or hope for?

To see the ocean.

7. How is he/she strong?

Can put any situation in a good light.

8. How is he/she weak or vulnerable?

Isn't very aware of the world around him, and takes thing very literally.  Takes insults to heart.

9. What does he/she fear most?

Bugs.  This is a problem underground, especially since worms count as bugs in his mind.  All things that crawl are bugs.

10. Your Crowd Sorcery Sentence(s)

Aloys popped his head out of the ground.

"Ooh!  Good tall sir!  Where be you going?"

Fable Thatcher's sidekick

Andrew Rous is Fable's closest friend. He came from a family of sheperds where education was overlooked. Andrew found a book in the attic and realized that he was missing out. Hesecretly had his cousin teach him to read. One day, he found Fable's writings and wondered who wrote it. He found Fable and learned of her power and became her friend. He has brown hair and brown eyes. He is tan from years of working in the field. He wears a (dirty) white shirt and brown breeches with a tool belt.
