Chatterbox: Crowd Sorcery

Sidekick

Sidekick

Sidekicks in great stories come in many shapes and sizes: a jolly traveling companion, a dog or cat, a wise wizard who gives helpful advice, a goldfish in a bowl, a walking stick that talks. A sidekick gives the main character someone to talk to, which allows for dialogue and interaction. With two minds in the story, there’s the possibility for more action, tension, and more unexpected things to happen!

I can imagine Quill, the moonlight girl I mentioned on the Hero and Heroines thread, having a friend, Colin, whom she meets because he goes into the forest at night to gather Silvercaps, special flowers that sprout up when the moon is shining but wither before dawn.

I might write: “During the daytime, when he was not off in the village selling his Silvercaps, Colin tended to sleep inside his favorite hollow tree trunk. So there were usually bits of bark in his unruly dust-colored hair, and sometimes a centipede would crawl out of his pocket or an ant would drop out of his collar. He scratched his head often and smelled like the forest after a rain.”

Now that we have a main character, Fable Thatcher, what sidekick will you imagine for her? A comical friend? A wise mentor? A romantic interest? Will your sidekick even be human? Let your imaginations run wild!

1.Milo Lepharo

2.Milo has tan skin and caramel hair. His eyes are the green of spring grass.

3.Milo is the son of some rich aristocrats who held plenty of influence over the rulers of the kingdomm. When he was five years old, his parents were assassinated by an unknown group. He tried to survive on his own in his parent's decaying mansion, but he, unable to take care of himself, as (a)he was five years old and(b)he was used to being pampered and taken care of by others. Worried that the people who assassinated his parents would come back to the mansion to finish him off, Milo fled his parent's castle.

Milo survived alone on the streets for about two hours. He was found sobbing in a dark alley by Gershom, a pickpocket who originally intended to rob Milo, but pityed him and offered to take Milo under his wing and teach him the ways of the street.

Milo survived on the streets for five more years. But when Gershom made the mistake of robbing someone real rich, the police decided to take matters into their own hands. The police raided the dark alleys and regular hang outs of all the kids who lived in the streets. Milo was caught and put in jail. A little while later, he was bailed out by the Great Magic Mateo, the ringmaster of a circus. Mateo saw Milo's potential as an acrobat, as he was wirey, flexible, and unafraid. 10. When not performing as an acrobat, you could usually find Milo lying in whatever wide expanse of grass is available at the time, thinking. Milo was a very good thinker. He would just lie there, staring at the bright blue sky, watching the clouds drift by. If you are lying next to him, occasionally he'll point out a peculiar shaped cloud. "See, that one looks like a camelopard!"

1.Dew.

2.Dew is an indigo Mei (chirpy puffballs, see my entry in the fantasy dictionary for more info).

3.Dew is a Mei. Mei travel in clans and are highly selective about bloodlines. Dew's father mated with a Mei from another clan. When Dew was born, she and her siblings were cast out. All of her siblings died in the wilderness, but Dew was found by the main character and saved.

4.Dew is the main character's pet/friend.

5.Dew looks up to the main character as a parent/older brother/sister . Also, the main character can understand the Mei language (chirps).

6. Dew is fiercely protective of the main character. (Okay, here is some extra info about Mei that I forgot to put in the fantasy dictionary) Mei each have a special ability that activaes when they are feeling an emotion strongly. When Dew is angry or afraid, she can emit a special knockout/stun gas through the tips of each hair on her body.

7.Dew is afraid of losing the main character. One of Dew's secrets is that she was thrown out of her clan as a baby.

8.Dew is helpful because she is supportive of the main character and will still be supportive no matter what. Dew is also helpful because she can emit knock-out gas when she is scared or angry.

9.What Dew wants most is to be safe in every way. She wants never-ending food, comfort, and safe friends and family as well.

10. Dew was always asking for food. You could tell, she had a little act she did when she wanted it. First she would chirp in your ear like this: "Chirp chirp CHIRP!" The English translation of that is basically: "Food food NOW!" Dew isn't much for politeness. Actually, no Mei are polite. I don't think there's even a Mei word for please.

If you didn't give her food after she "politely" asked for some, she would start nibbling on your ear. Mei have quite sharp teeth, so I suggest you give Dew food NOW!

If you don't, Dew will take matters into her own hands.I'm telling you, you don't want this. She'll make a right mess of your kitchen.

The moral of this story is (a)Dove is very persistant and (b) If you don't pamper Dove, she is not a happy Mei.

BRAINSTORM!

Will you use Fable Thatcher in sequel story? If so, put a sidekick in who helps Fable Thatcher only to gain her help with something but she refuses, so in sequel turns villain. So he wouldn't be a sidekick, but more of a hopeful ally turned villain bent on revenge.

Galen Morgana

Salt-and-pepper hair, glasses that give him a wise look.

The village's healer--but he's been concealing his amazing magical strength for years. In reality, he's the strongest magician in the world!

He has an interest in Fable, has seen what amazing things she's done. Wants to help her control her powers. Is watching over her because of a debt he owes her parents from long ago...

He's never seen anything like this strange girl and her powers. A little scared actually, but he's incredibly loyal and will stick to the promises he gave her parents. But he's not a great teacher. Fable will need to approach him herself, which is a little bit of a problem though because she doesn't really have a high opinion of him...

He will help her control her gift and learn how to work around the prophecy.

If he could, Galen would like to escape. He's got the strongest powers ever, but he feels a bit trapped watching over this little girl. Still, he always keeps his promises...

Galen had spent many hours watching the girl through his apothecary window. He felt her pain, cried with her when her gift got out of control. But how could he help? He fingered the charm in his pocket, the charm that reminded him, every minute, how he had made that promise. To her parents, so long ago. And he had kept his word. Left the magicians' guild to come here, to this village, to watch the girl. She needed help. But Galen wasn't a teacher. He wasn't brave enough to approach her. Galen closed his eyes behind his glasses and hoped, hoped with all his might, that she might come to him before it was too late.

"Mmmmmm donuts" I said. I go to bite into one as my mother wakes me up. "Whatttttttt...?" I say. "It's doooneeee!!" She said in a sing song voice. I groan. More tests. Most of which explode. And hurt me. Its not like I care though. I run downstairs and head into the machine. The machine supposedly transports people to different dimesions. So they pressed the button and I was falling. And landed on someone writing something.
