Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Does anybody wanna

Does anybody wanna talk about global warming?

We have had weird-ish weather in Ohio too (it's only my 2nd year here but things are strange). We had a really wet summer, it poured at least once a week! It also didn't get very hot. When we came back from vacation the weather was different (we'd only been gone two weeks!). Suddenly it was dry and has only sprinkled since we came back. Also the leaves started to fall off the trees here. As for recycling I disagree, but I do agree with the ethanol. I read an article in National Geographic (I read them every month!) that confirmed what you say. Did you know that sugar cane actually works as a better fuel and some South American countries are using it instead of gas? I think getting a hybrid car is great. I hope I can get one (but they're sooo expensive!). I also hope that they come out with fuel cells soon. Check out what I wrote about pesticides on the other link.

I've lived in Ohio for around eight years, and the weather hasn't been very unusual. We did have a horrendous ice storm a few years back, and the weather was 15 degrees out, the power lines got knocked out, (which means no heat) and it wasn't safe to drive. My family spent that Christmas huddled around a gas heater before packing up and staying at our church for almost a week. The past few Christmases haven't had much snow at all, though. (It's a weird feeling to be playing tag in your yard in late winter.) It's starting to cool off here, but no dropping leaves or droughts. Anyway, my point was:  if global warming is actually affecting our planet, I haven't felt it in Ohio yet.

If you're gonna call global warming climate change, then there's always been global warming. Because the climate is always changing. If the weather is warm, they blame it on global warming. If the weather is cold, global warming. If people tried to change the weather, they wouldn't be able to do it, but now, suddenly, the weather is eveybody's fault. it doesn't make sense.

Global Warming, in my opinion, is a big hoax. If the ice caps were melting, the water level would go down. Remember, water EXPANDS when it is frozen. So, it contracts when it melts, thus the water level would go down, not up. Right? And really, years ago we were worried about global cooling! How did we suddenly change our minds? There have been hot periods before. There have been cold periods before. I live in a place where it snows a lot. Last year's winter was worse than usual. How could that be an effect of global warming?

What about all the ice on top of mountains, on Greenlad, Antarctica, above the water level?

Global cooling was just a small theory, not a big concern. It was disproven.

Everybody keeps talking about the weather near where they live. This is NOT an indicator of global warming!!! It's a very complex issue, scientifically, and very gradual. Would you notice if the air got 1 degree warmer? No. Would water melt if it was at 32 degrees? Yes.

What about the ice on top of the mountains? Are you saying that it'll trickle down into the ocean, making the sea level higher? Well, if the ice caps are melting, and water is lowerering, than the trickle from the mountains can even out the water level. So we'll be the same. And yes, global cooling was a small theory, but I do believe it was somewhat of a concern. But, it was not disproven. Science cannot prove or disprove anything. There should be no "prove." Not that I'm saying that I believe in global cooling. So how do we know that in a few decades, we'll look back at this and say, "Wow, I can't believe we believed that," like we're doing with global cooling? The earth has gone through hot periods before, correct?

"What about the ice on top of the mountains? Are you saying that it'll trickle down into the ocean, making the sea level higher?"

YES. What else would happen? Water drains through it's watershed into the sea!

How much of the ice caps are above water level? And, weather patterns will get more radical if the sea water temperature changes just a little.

Yes, hot periods, but the CO2 numbers are off the charts.

Forgive my ignorance, but what's CO2? And is there any evidence of radical weather changes?

CO2 is Carbon Dioxide, a gas normally found in our atmosphere. It acts as a helpful blanket traping in heat from the sun. But, in large quantities, it could be fatal to life on Earth, trapping tooo much heat. WE have released enuormous amounts of CO2 into the air ever since the IndustrialRevolution began, and still do today, through cars, factories, ect. If you were to look at a globe, the atmosphere would be as thick as the paint coloring theglobe. We release about 27 billion tonnes of the stuff into the atmosphere yearly.

Radical weather has not truly been seen yet, because it won't flick on like a switch. This is a gradual, and slow process. (But not in geological time!) Here's one example however, Hurricanes have been getting more frequent, and stronger.

Sorry for cutting into your debate, but I completely agree with Vendy.  It's true that global warming and cooling has occured thousands of other times in earth's history, but over the course of millions of years. So, while global warming may be a natural phenomenon, it's happening at a rate waaaay faster than ever before.  Oh, and to Emily L.:  Why do you want all the polar bears to die???  That's so horrible!!!  You should really watch the movie Arctic Tale.  And An Inconvenient Truth.  And The Eleventh Hour.
