Chatterbox: Down to Earth

2012, many people

2012, many people are saying that crazy things are going to happen. I've heard natural dissasters, the poles switching, and even becoming one with our higher beings. What do you guys think about this?

I do not believe that the world will end in 2012. Please don't be offended if you do believe this. I'm just explaining why I don't. Several reasons. First, the end of the world has been predicted many times, by people that believed the world would end before now. Guess what -- we're still here.

Secondly, if you're a Christian (I am), you believe that the world will end when Jesus comes back. The Bible says that not even Jesus knows when He will come back. But the Mayans knew? That makes little to no sense.

And my last point -- the Mayans. If they could predict the end of the world, how come they couldn't even predict the end of their own civilization? It just doesn't make any sense to me.

It's all very very silly stuff made up by people who want to make money.

As to the Mayan bit, They did find something in Mayan ruins saying stuff about the world "as we know it" ending in 2012. However, this is not applicable to life today, and I will tell you why. The year we are in right now is not technically 2010. The standard calender, if I recall, started the year Christ was born. But that's not quite it--- I mean, people didn't just decide that day, "Oh, lookie let's make a calender." It wouldn't have developed for a few years after Christ's birth, especially considering that he and his parents fled to Egypt for a few years and no one really knew about them. That puts us, *technically* speaking, in, I dunno, 2015 or so? Which means that 2012 as alluded to by the Mayans passed three years ago, give or take some, and nothing apocalyptic happened.

My plans for 2012 include my eighth grade graduation (!) and maybe Sarah running for president *hopefulness*... That's about it though. No apocalypse.

That's a good point. It made me think of something else, too -- how do people know that the Mayans didn't mean 2010 years from then? Because (correct me if I'm wrong) didn't the Mayans live in B.C. times? Something to think about.

Not to mention, Christ wasn't actually even born in 1 AD. It was... Um... 6AD, I think.

I thought it was about 3 B.C., but they didn't actually make up the calander until way after.

I know this sounds incredibly sad and deppresed sounding, but if the world ends, it won't really matter if we die or not, does it? I mean, I don't want to die because I love being on Earth and being with the people I love on Earth, and if that is wiped out, dieing will be just as good as living. That being said, I firmly believe that the we will not all die in 2012.

I think it's a bunch of nonsense.  Most of you were probably too little to remember, but just before 2000, everyone thought all the computer systems would crash.  It's all so ridiculous.  Plus, even if it is going to happen, what's the point in stressing over it?

I heard a rumor that my like, seventh cousin, who's like, thrity, went down to Guatemala to "prepare the way" cuz he thinks the world is going to end. I haven't seen him in a while, so he might have. But I strongly disagree. I don't think the world will end anytime soon.

Me neither. I do beleive the Mayans predicted the world would end in 2012, but I also believe they're wrong. I'm not afraid of 2012, what I'm afraid of is the crime rate in 2011 and the bankruptcy (sp?) in 2013.

Hmm. I heard somewhere that 2012 is the year that Venus and the Earth will align, and, since Venus is the "goddess of birth" (in legends, etc., you know what I mean), it's like the Earth is being reborn. That's just what I heard though . . . I also believe that the world will end when Jesus comes back, so I'm not worried. :)

The Mayans actually said that there would be a new awakening or something like that-NOT that it was going to end. Some crazy person heard that and thought that the world was going to end. Also, the Mayan calendar ends in 2012. But, I mean, dude, calendars end every year. That's why you go out and buy a new calendar. :P

Well, the Mayans did have a number system that basically went in cycles, and they did their calander that way too. The theory is that when they get around to "Zero year" the world is re-created. And according to archeologists, 2012 matches up with the next zero year.

I'm not afraid of the world ending. (but the movie 2012 did look a little disturbing, but COOL!) I believe the world will end when Jesus comes again (only God knows when that will happen). By the way, what does pole switching mean? *Olive says Hi*

Yeah, I think the world will end when Jesus comes and not before.

Pole switching has something to do with the magnetic polarity of the earth switching direction. So all our compasses would point south.
