I was going to go to a science march for Earth Day, but then it was too rainy to go. My mom made me a science headband to wear, which was cool.

Oh just realized I said hace instead of have. Oops!

I don't know if this counts, but I've been volunteering at the zoo. There are two sessions per month. For the first one, we all learn about the animal. Then we go outside that exhibit, and tell visitors about the animal. Its really fun! I'll say more about it in the morning, I'm not supposed to be online very late.

So far we've learned about echinoderms, sharks, Sumatran tigers, and muskoxen. Echinoderms are sea urchins, sea stars (they are not star fish, because they are not fish. Please do not call them star fish) sea cucumbers, and sand dollars. Ha! I made you think it was going to start with sea, didn't I? My favorite shark is the Japanese wobbegong shark. They are also called the carpet shark, because they like to flatten themselves against the ground, and their coloring looks kind of like carpet. You should look up a picture of them, because they look really cool. The Sumatran tigers are probably my favorite. They are the smallest subspecies of tiger, but they have the longest whiskers. The largest subspecies is the Amur tiger. Its also called the Siberian tiger. The muskoxen are native to the tundra, so they have really thick fur. They actually have two layers of fur. The inner layer is called qiviut, and it is so soft! The outer layer is mostly waterproof, so its like they're wearing a warm jacket with a raincoat over it.

I did not realize how long that got.

Well, I attempted to plant a maple tree. Every year I find lots of little  maple tree sprouts growing in my yard, and 1 or 2 years ago I dug one up and planted it in a pot so we wouldn't have to kill it when we planted our garden. It grew 2 leaves and I was really happy and proud, but then I forgot to water it and it turned brown and died. So this year I'm trying again and hopefully I don't forget to water it this time! It's not anything big, but in a few years there will be one more tree in the world. :)

Every tree counts! Not only do some of them give us food, but they convert Carbon Dioxide to Oxygen and they give us shade. And wood.

Every year, there's this thing called the Urban Runoff, which is about three miles and goes around the neighborhood. The streets are blocked off and everything.

The awesome thing is, THE FINISH LINE IS RIGHT IN FRONT OF OUR HOUSE! YAAAAYYYYY!!!! So we can't see the starting, but we can see who comes in first and whatnot! And then there's a fair thing afterward, (we live in front of a high school--I'll post a picture of it beneath so you'll see--and there's a big grassy area where people set up exhibits and things) with (usually) a bounce house. And face painting. And food trucks show up.

The fair was inside the school this year, because it had rained the night before and everything was soggy, (so we didn't go.) but the race still happened and I took a lot of pictures!

And, go figure! I can't show you a single one of them because they all have people. Heh.

But there was a trio of people that ran it--dressed in pirate costumes! Like, red and black and white and ripped pants and eyepatches. Fun times. (At one point after they finished, they were standing in front of the neighbors' house and I really wanted to go get their autographs. But I figured it might be weird.)

And there was a person dressed like a sea captain, hat and all--and his partner wore a ship!

Seriously. He had something like cardboard or maybe plywood built and painted like a ship, that he wore on straps over his shoulders. It was at least four and a half feet wide.

Yay!

Wow! Leafpool, that sounds cool! I wish our community did something like that. Also, I love that picture! That sunset is beautiful!

Sorry to say, I didn't do much for Earth Day, but I do like hearing about people's experiences. :)

Yeah, it was supposed to just be a picture of the sunset but the only other picture I have of the school is of it with a whole bunch of dirty snow on the grass in front of it, which doesn't look very nice at all.
