She watched Alex

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

She watched Alex

She watched Alex die - or at least be devoured by the "insects" whom she once thought were protectors - his shirt soaked in blood, beautiful eyes never wavering. She watched a silent girl save her life more than once, her final gift with a simple "Wait!" into the night. The girl had seen love banished, all feelings, thoughts, dreams, and emotions destroyed with a single three-prong needle.

She sobbed, silently of course, in her head upon the outcome, mainly from Alex's apparent death. What if... What if he was not dead? What if they shoved him in the Crypts like his father, like her mother? What if he was alive, even if so barely?

She couldn't stand to see him dead.

Watching from a distance, she felt too strong of a connection between her own life, a suffering that opened her own eyes as emotions floundered. Love. Alex died for her for love. Her mother gave her up for love and stayed away for love. She risked her life for love. They lived for love.

And they would resist.

Yet here I stand, a girl, heart broken in so many ways upon his death. He is not dead, he cannot be. The end of the story he'll walk out, smiling, autumn hair blowing in the wind, as he embraces his love.

Lena.

Delirium. A world where love and feelings are banished. A world where a group resists.

Delirium.

She turned into her arm, heart throbbing, a small tear streaking down her face as her mind sobbed. Alex, please, please live on she whispered in her mind. Please live on for Lena. Please live on.

She could not imagine being in the girl's place. She couldn't do it.

Or could she? Alex's last word, run was the gift of life. Lena would not throw that away, and neither would she. Still, her heart throbbed for the character, praying he show up smiling once again.

Like nothing ever happened.

Delirium.

*My heart-wrenching feels after reading the first book by Lauren Oliver called Delirium. ALEX!! *Quiet sobs* Why...? Why did you sacrifice yourself for Lena? Why did you awaken her from the lies and daze and leave her alone in the world? WHY??!! *Please be alive, please, please please. I don't know what I'll do if you are still-still gone in book 2. *Hides in arms* Why, Alex, why?!
