I think that veggies are awesome. While I do not have enough self-control to give up meat, I think that it's healthy to go off of it. Also, if you can make a small but silent protest to killing animals, good for you!

Yes, I agree. I am a veggie myself and intend to be for the rest of my life. If you think you can, I recommend giving it a go. Or at least become Vegetarian for one day every month. It's healthier and you will start feeling good about yourself. (:

I really want to be vegetarian because I hate how animals are treated in factory farms, which is where most of our meat comes from, and because I simply do not like how meat tastes. But I don't really know how to get enough protein, so my parents won't let me officially be vegetarian. Right now I just avoid meat and see how long it takes my parents to notice!

Factory farms are disgusting and awful and should be abolished. It's a terrible way to treat animals. It doesn't matter whether or not animals have feelings (though I personally think they do), but they can feel pain and get stressed by bad treatment. They need to go outside and have the resources to live normally. They need much more space than they are given and they need to be treated as creatures that are aware of their surroundings. I don't have a problem with people who eat meat. I don't have a problem with animals being raised as a food source. I do have a problem with treating those animals in such an inhumane manner!

Try to buy free-range eggs, milk, and meat if you are able to. True, they are a little more expensive, but they support farms that do not keep their animals in too-small cages without access to the outdoors. Cage-free eggs and meat are not the same thing as free-range! Cage-free usually means that all the birds were dumped together on a warehouse floor and is actually even worse than being raised in cages. Yes, they can move around, but they are so crowded and stressed that they will peck at themselves and each other, drawing blood. These wounds are particularly prone to infection because the warehouses usually aren't cleaned often enough and the birds generally don't get any medical attention.

Alright, PSA over! Congratulations, you have found a topic Cockleburr is passionate about!

Cockleburr, I am a vegetarian, and you get get a lot of protein through peanut butter, nuts, and black beans, instead of eating meat. It works for me.

I've honestly never been on Down to Earth before, so never been in a discussion, so... you get it.

But I wholeheartedly think that going without meat is not healthy and not a natural diet.

She wasn't being outright rude, she was stating her opinion in a perfectly professional manner. If you disagree with it that's a different issue. :)

i wholeheartedly agree, but i agree that factory farms are... i don't know how to describe them, that is why me and my family only get meat from free range farms, which are healthier and kinder to the animals. also, i wouldn't have enough self-control to stop eating meat.

Yes, vegetarianism is an important topic for many reasons. A) It's healthier to have more plant-based foods. B) It's more ethical to animals, as many animals bred for meat are kept in tiny cages in factory farms their whole lives. And finally, C) It's better for the world, as plant-based diets create a more sustainable future. And just to be clear on this matter, as this gets messed up a lot, vegetarian means to not eat meat. Vegan mean to not eat meat or animal products, like milk or eggs. Thank you so much for drawing attention to this important subject. Please comment if you have any questions.

I have a question, this might sound weird but Vegans don't eat animal products, but what if the manure from a factory farm is used to grow veggies, can you still eat them?

I’m different than a vegetation or an omnivore. I’m a pescatarian. My only source of “meat” is fish. (No, not all pescatarians eat chicken. I strongly stay away from it.)

I believe that fish are the most naturally grown. Yes, some are farm raised, but I only get naturally raised fish from Asian markets and stuff. Also, I used to live in a sea side area where fish were naturally caught. Health wise, being a vegetatian is good for you, but fish has an amazing source of Omega 3, so I include that in my diet. Also, I don’t eat any other meats or poultry because of their awful tactics of how they raise the animals. Unfortunately, these methods are taking over majority of farms now. They force feed the poor animals and make them so fat that scientific observation have reported over the years they can’t even heave themselves up. The growing human population requires more meat on animals, which is why I’m a pescatarian. I eat things that can be naturally grown. If less people eat beef and poultry, and farm raised fish, then fewer animals will suffer.

Sorry for the tiny rant. Anyone else a pescatarian? ^^

@Cockleburr that is exactly how I feel, you summed it up perfectly.

@Doctor Who I am thinking of becoming a pescatarian because I play a lot of sports and are really active so it would be a good way to get protein.

Most poultry and life stock are kept in discusting conditions and personally I don't really care if it's natural to eat meat or not. Free range animals for the win!

I completely agree. In my opinion, It is completely inhumane to kill animals for food. At the places where they kill the animals, they completely mistreat them before they get killed. They are pushed through small dirty, corridors, and then, in most cases, are tranquilized with a special type of gun made for this purpose. It is so devastating that this happens. I think these houses/ factories, (oftern called slaughter houses), should be illegal. Animals should be treated with respect, not treated with inhumanity.

Thank you for making this thread, this topic is definetly something more people need to become aware about.
