Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Regents Exams

Regents Exams

Woo! I took the Living Environment (read: Biology) Regent yesterday, and got my score today. I got a 91! Very satisfied, though I probably could’ve done better.

I took the Algebra Regent last year (got an 84, good enough), and so I’ll be taking the Geometry on Tuesday. (Tuesday? I think so.) I’ve been failing Math all year (I blame my slightly insane and undoubtedly incompetent Math teacher) but they’re letting take the regent anyway. I took a practice one to prove to my school that I should be allowed to move up, and I got in the 80s. However, I’m still nervous. There are some parts of math that just don’t make sense...

Anyway, does anyone else have to take Regents? Does anyone have any tips?

I took Regents exams in New York State. Is that where you live? I don't know if other states have Regents exams. Review, then treat it like any other test. Try to keep calm. Geometry is very different from algebra. Let us know how it goes. Congratulations on the Living Environment 91!

Aaah, Regents, the bane of my existence.

To answer your question, Admin, Regents are statewide tests - I'm 99% sure no other state has them, besides NY.

I took the Living Environment yesterday, and Algebra 1 the day before. We should be getting our scores sometime next week. I'm feeling pretty confident, though - I think I did well enough to get above a 90 in both!

I took the Earth Science Regents last year and got an 88, which is better than I'd been expecting I'd get, honestly. xD  Here are some tips!

1. Don't leave studying till the last minute! That got me an 88. I'm a very irresponsible test taker - cramming genuinely works for me - but when you've got to remember everything you've learned in a year, it doesn't work that well. This year, I was more responsible, and started studying the night before (as opposed to day of). ;)

2. Never ever ever leave a question blank! For multiple choice, you've got a one in four chance that you'll get it right, and an even better chance if you've got an idea of what answers are clearly not right. For short response, even if you don't know how to answer/solve it, do your best, because you have no idea what they'll give you credit for. Something is always better than nothing.

3. Use your time effectively, and check over your answers!

4. Ask. your teachers. for help. If for some reason, you've got an issue with your teacher (I know I'd never ask my algebra teacher for help in a million years), ask your friends or parents. The day of the algebra Regents, I was going over one of the practice tests I'd done, and asking my friends why this answer wasn't right ("it's where the lines intersect, so it should be a solution, right?" "no, remember, it's just greater than, not greater than or equal to" "OOOH") and then I saw really similar questions on the Regents that I could answer properly!

Good luck with your geometry Regents, coyote! I'll be rooting for you! <3

Huh, I took the Algebra last year but I’m not taking the Earth Science until... Next year? The year after? A while.

Thanks for the tips!

I’m a pretty terrible test-taker too, I studied for like only three days for the Bio. Thank goodness I’m good at science...

I also somehow always finish tests fast. I finished the Bio yesterday in less than an hour and 15 minutes. I know people tell me to slow down, but, like, this is how I do it. *shrugs*

Anyway. Thanks again! Let me know when you get your scores, yeah?

That's quick! And don't worry about it, I'm fairly quick too - as long as you check your work, doesn't matter how long you take!

We got our scores today! I got (another) 88 on the Algebra and a 93 on the Living Environment!

@Admin

Yeah, I live in NY. Huh, I thought a few other states had them too. Guess not!

And thanks!

I'm homeschooled, and don't live in NY, so no. Congratulations on your previous scores, and I wish you the best of luck on your up coming exams!

Eh . . . I've got no idea what regents are since I'm moving on to middle school only this year.

Regents exams are standardized tests, so that every student in any given high school course (such as geometry or American history, etc.) throughout the state of New York takes the same exact test. I believe there's a statewide schedule so each specific test is given at the exact same time throughout the state. ( 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, you may open your text booklet and begin. Students and schools can be compared based upon these standardized tests. The exams are prepared by the NYS Board of Regents.
