Bunnies! :3

Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Bunnies! :3

Bunnies! :3

Yep, you read that right. This thread is a bit random for DtE, but I decided to create it anyways, because why not? ;)

Anywho. I just got a bunny! Her name is Alouette, or Lou, for short. She is a black Netherland Dwarf rabbit, and is only seven weeks old. XD She is the epitome of adorableness.

I had owned a few rabbits before, when I was a lot younger. They were albino and, honestly, kinda creeped me out. We got three of them as bunnies, but, because I was young, I didn't know how to take care of them, and they just kinda did their own thing most of the time. Eventually, we set them loose in our chicken coop yard, because we got sick of having to deal with a messy, dirty cage every day. Pretty soon, they became feral. I'm not kidding. Biting, scratching, and snarling when you came near, and digging holes to try to escape.

Yeah. We ended up getting rid of them, and my experience with bunnies was ruined for quite a while.

But now I'm older, more responsible, and (hopefully) more mature, and I plan to take care of my wittle Lou. :3 But, honestly, I'm not an expert on bunnies. I know that they don't like to be held off the ground, because that makes them feel insecure. They prefer to be close to the ground or snuggled in your lap. They can't sweat, so in the summer when it is very warm, you have to stick frozen water bottles inside their cage so they can get some respite from the heat with the concentration. And, their, ahem, feces are little round, dry balls that don't make very much of a mess. (But their urine sure does! Lou actually peed on me this morning, the little rascal!!)

So, are there any other bunny/rabbit owners out there on the CB? Any tips for a beginner such as myself?

I DO!!! I have a Havana Satin Dwarf named Star and she is THE. WORST. I'm serious! She hates everybody except for me for some unknown reason, and she is very vocal. Bunnies are actually not quiet AT ALL. A very important tip: Do not give a rabbit anything that won't move when they pull on it (possibly because they are STANDING ON IT YEAH I'M TALKIN' TO YOU STAR) because they will pull it back and release it OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN and it makes a really loud noise (and for some reason Star only did it at night when we were all trying to sleep).

Rabbits cannot see right in front of their noses and they consider it a challenge if you put yourself under their chins because that is how they command others to groom them if they are in charge. When you want to pet Lou, hover your hand up and to the side of her face and let her boop it or lower her chest to the ground before you start petting her.

Timothy hay keeps a rabbit's teeth short and provides a lot of nutrients for them. Clip a rabbit's claws regularly, always making sure they are supported. The best way to do this is to pick up their front half and hug it so that they are sufficiently comfortable. Clip front paw nails. Then shift bunny's weight to one back foot and gently get her to extend the foot that Lou's weight isn't on. Clip nails and repeat by switching weight to other foot. To clip it squeeze the tweezers gently on the claw TWICE and if the rabbit pulls her paw away then that means you are too close the the quick (the blood vein in the claw) and you need to clip closer to the point of the claw. If she pulls away after you clipped, it just means you clipped a hair along with the nail and you should not be alarmed.

If you have any questions, I can provide much more info. I read up a TON about rabbits before I got Star. She's not the sweetest thing ever but I love her so... I'm kinda stick with her. XP Is Lou spayed? I don't think Star is. She's very moody and also has a big dewlap (a flap of skin around the neck) and she also musks. Not the greatest. BUT she is very loving when she wants to be.

ALSO. Unless your rabbit is very very very very dirty, do not give her a bath. Any water left in her fur coulda or them sick from cold. Also, I read that you shouldn't kiss your bunny but I've shared many an apple with Star and she's fine. A couple of fruits that rabbits adore: Apples, strawberries, bananas (so funny watching Star eat a banana), blueberries, and watermelon. NEVER GIVE YOUR RABBIT CITRUS OR PINEAPPLE. Coteus is poisonous to rabbits and I'm pretty sure you shouldn't give pineapple  to them either.

Thank you so much, Rogue!! You gave me quite a lot of tips that I shall take to heart. XD Star actually sounds a bit like one of my other rabbits what with the snippy temperament and dewlap. And no, Lou's not spayed. I don't think we were planning on getting her "fixed" because she probably won't ever come in contact with any buck rabbits.

Aw, congratulations! Lou sounds absolutely adorable.

I've never had a rabbit myself, but one of my classmates tells quite an amusing story about how he got his rabbit. We were at the local fair, all full of fried bread dough and cotton candy. There was a little barn with a booth selling rabbits and he was allowed to buy one, bring home on the bus, and go home early to get the rabbit comfortable!

Anyway, congratulations once more!

Wow, what a coincidence! I actually purchased Lou at my county fair as well. XD There was a petting zoo that was selling some baby bunnies, and after some discussion and slight drama with us thinking that all the rabbits had already been sold, I bought Lou! :3

Aw, congrats! Lou sounds adorable. :3 I love rabbits, and though I don’t have any myself, I do have friends that have them. Theirs are...er...meat rabbits, so they’re planning on breeding them, and they’ve offered to give us one or two of the babies once they do (ours would be pets). So, I’m hoping to have some rabbits of my own in the future. They’re so cute and fuzzy and they seem like great pets. :3

Thanks! And they really are great pets! You don't have to walk them or give them baths like dogs, or get them spayed/neutered (necessarily, for some cases you do) like a cat, and if you spend enough time with them, they become very tame. XD

I have a bunny! He's a Mini Rex (supposedly, though he is one of the biggest rabbits I have ever seen) and his name is William. I've had him for about three years, and he is one of the most precious babies I've ever seen.

Though he's a male rabbit, he hasn't been neutered, and he is still very sweet. He does get into a mood sometimes and doesn't want to be picked up but generally he is very loveable. So despite what everyone says about the necessity of having male rabbits neutered, it hasn't been a huge problem for me. I'm not really sure about female rabbits but that's what I've experienced with my wittle boy.

My family used to want to have William try and lose some weight, since he has the big roll around his neck, but that's supposed to be there! It's called a dewlap, and don't try to get rid of it. It's simply where they store their extra fat and it helps keep them warm in the winter.

Feed Lou lots of veggies! Officially rabbits are supposed to get around 4 cups of fresh veggies a day, and while I don't feed Will that much, he gets a large carrot or two almost every day. Rabbits love them and they're good for them.

I don't know if you have dogs, but if so, keep them away from Lou. I have two dogs, and one of them always barks at Will and he gets very scared and starts thumping. Since rabbits are prey animals it's just a natural reaction to the perceived threat, but it could make Lou very on edge and she might even bite you if she thinks you're the "threat".

One more thing: I buy Will Pen Pals rabbit food. It is super cheap on Amazon and he loves it. There's about 25 pounds in a bag for $12ish and it lasts a long time. It's in a big blue bag. It's a much better deal than buying lots of smaller bags of food.

I could give lots more advice, but I hope you have fun with Lou!! Ask if you have any questions!

William sounds adorable. :3 What a cute name for a rabbit.

Yeah... Lou actually doesn't like carrots! It's kinda weird. She doesn't like apples, cucumbers, zucchini, celery, or carrots. We think and hope that it's just because she's so young. Maybe, when she's a bit older, she'll grow to like those things. XD But she really does love lettuce! She eats a LOT of it.

Honestly, the thumping is adorable. :3 We had a dog. He was the most sweetest thing in the world, but when we had our other rabbits, he would chase them around the hard and bark at them and try and bite them. He was actually put down about a month ago for other health reasons, so thankfully we don't have to worry about him with Lou.

Alrighty, I will definitely look into Pen Pal's rabbit food! Thank you so much, Leafmist!! We got like a 3/4 gallon plastic baggy filled with food from Lou's previous owners that she hasn't finished off yet. It might just be that she's so small, but it seems like she really doesn't eat very much.

Congratulations on being a new mum! I love bunnies so, so much. I actually have two right now and I think they are the sweetest things in the world.

Did you know that you can litter train rabbits? That might be a solution to the messy hutch problem. Usually they do their business in a little pile in the corner, or sometimes they do it all over the place. I trained George and Daisy by first buying a special rabbit litter box from the pet store. Then, place it in a corner with some litter in it (make sure it's bunny safe). If they don't start using it straight away (George did) place a little bit of their poop in it so they hopefully decide that that's where it goes. There are plenty of tips online, too.

Yeah, so I suggest spending a little time each day just getting to know Lou but talking to her, stroking her and playing. That way you can become best buddies pretty soon. Also, I'm pretty sure if you had rabbits previously you'll know how to fees Lou, but I'd not: veggies, fruit as a treat, lots of hay and pellets are optional.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Aw, thank you. XD

I have actually heard of that! One of the other rabbits that was for sale along with Lou and a couple of her siblings was litter trained, supposedly. Lou actually seems to have claimed one corner of her hutch for a, ahem, peeing place, but her poo is just scattered all over. I'll definitely do more research on how to litter train rabbits.

Yeah, Lou definitely gets a lot of snuggle time. If not from me, then from all my siblings, too. XD

Thank you! I definitely will!

Congratulations!

I've had bunnies in the past, but not anymore. One named Rosie, when I was little, and one a few years ago named Pig. Short for Pigwidgeon. We were thinking of getting one at the 4-H Fair this Summer, and having it live in the chicken coop, but we didn't.

Bunnies poop everywhere. And it smells. If you let her out at all, you'll have to find all the poop, or else it will stink until it's cleaned. That's pretty much all I remember, since it's been a while, but I wish you the best with Lou!

Thank you!

Aw, how cute. :3 Pig is an adorable nickname. And, funny coincidence: I actually got Lou at our 4-H County fair this year!!

Ugh, yes. Last night and this morning, I cuddled with her and she pooped all over me. T^T But thank heavens that rabbit doo is hard and dry and doesn't smear.

Aw, congrats, Vyolette! I've never had bunnies but aspire to have them some day. I can't exactly offer any advice other than what I guess goes for all living things- give Alouette lots of love- but still, congrats! I love black rabbits by the way.
