Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Happy Thanksgiving!!

Happy Thanksgiving!!

What are your Thanksgiving traditions?

Every year, my family of five goes to D.C. to celebrate with my mother’s brother’s family. We go over at around 11:00, eat lunch, watch A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, and eat a big fat turkey. Except the vegetarians. Right now I’m watching Tina Fey talk about Mean Girls on the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade!

I’m excited to learn about your Thanksgiving traditions!

Happy late Thanksgiving!

My family and I used to have quite a few holiday traditions, but a lot of things have changed this year, including traditions. We would usually have a big Thanksgiving feast together and have a "Thankful Jar" where we would write out what we're thankful for on sticky notes, put them in the jar, then takes turns reading them out loud after dinner. But my grandma sold her farm (which was where we always held holiday celebrations) last spring, so... we still had a big feast (at a different location), but no Thankful Jar, for some reason.

But oh well, I guess it really doesn't matter. Just like with Christmas, it's not the objects that matter, but the people you get to spend time with. :)

I always go with my family to a big gathering of relatives in Massachusetts. This year I learned that the tradition was started over 70 years ago, by my great-aunt’s mother, who invited the whole Greek branch over to celebrate because she never had a large family of her own. Their influence is pretty deep; apart from mostly sharing the genes, we always do Greek dancing, the younger cousins call my great-aunt Yay’a, and someone makes spanakopita every year. There’s usually more people than I can easily keep track of, and a new dog or cat running around. Most of us dress up for the big dinner, which includes a turkey or two. I can always find something to do if I’m not interested in sitting around talking—there’s also singing, a fire, cookies and books. It’s a nice time.

For Thanksgiving my family travels to my Grandma's house as do all of our cousins and aunts and uncles. This year there were 18 kids (one on the way) 4 moms 4 dads and my two grandparents. It was super fun!I am the second oldest and so I help plan talent shows and olympics it is super fun.
