I enter the ballroom with a spring in my step. It’s funny, this will only be the second time I attend a ball here, although I’ve sent Sea Glass and Nymph to so many.

I take my time looking around. The floor is glossy and reflective under the soft lights, topped with tables of refreshments, surrounded by a moat and framed with curtains of ivy. The ceiling is high and vaulted, almost like a church, and has a line of chandeliers down the middle. I have to walk under them, of course. I also have to dance with my reflection. Wait, there’s enough space—I do a cartwheel. I haven’t tried that in a while.

I almost don’t see Rogue. They’ve gotten up above some of the vines. I can’t tell if they’ve noticed me. I wave and call out.

”Hi! I’m going to put on some music. Do you want to dance?”

Shoot I'm sorry this sounds really fun but I think I need to rescind my "I'll do this" because I have too much schoolwork to do. Sorry, guys! Maybe another time.

I find it amusing about how annoyed I am about the fact that no one wanted to go to the ball with me, but I manage. I think it would be for the best though, that no one really asks me, or vice versa. Chaotic-evils stay by themselves, usually.

I try to saunter confidently into the ballroom, but it doesn’t really have any effect, for there were only a couple people actually there. Fashionably early?

I see Viola and Rouge talking, and decide not to approach. Instead, I go towards the food, butp almost immediately get off track when I see a beautiful grand piano about two times the size of me. I sit down on the red velvet playing seat, and just look at the keys.

I have no intention of playing it, so I just admire the handy work done for it. Ive never owned a real piano, nevermind played on one before. I have been taking piano lessons for a while though, because I found a keyboard in my attic. I’ve learned to play a few broadway songs, but mostly songs from Zelda, or Undertale.

Getting up from the piano, I start smell the food. I walk towards a platter filled to the brim with different colors and layers of jello, and cut a piece for myself. I’m going to force myself to enjoy this place, no matter what.

I run full-tilt through the double doors and skid a few feet on the glossy marble mosaic floors. I freeze and look up, but it appears no one noticed my terrible entrance. I certainly hope they haven’t. I return my gaze to the floor and examine the patterns. It’s a rather pretty square-octagon tesselation. Shaking my head, I look around. I notice Viola? standing off to the side, talking up to... the ceiling? No, not the ceiling. Rogue appears to have scaled the ivy-covered walls and is now sitting on a ledge, feet dangling. Another person—Artimerrx?—is sitting at a gorgeous grand piano. I wonder what they’re going to play, and if I’ll recognize it... But then they get up and move towards a table of refreshments. I adjust my bow tie, considering. I decide to hang to the edges for now, see who else comes in.

I walk in and look around at the stunning interior. Maybe it was better I didn’t ask anyone, I can tell I’m going to spend the majority of this night examining this room or maybe beyond. The marble floors were polished so well the shiny ness was almost blinding. The piano was grand and breathtaking. I wish I could play a piano..Meh. I’m too lazy to learn. There are large stairways leading to huge platforms that turn into patios out of large glass windows.

I begin skipping around Hoping this’ll lift the awkward air around us. Viola and Rouge just laugh and Artimerrx looks flat out disapointed. I walk over to CD.(am I aloud to call you that or do you prefer something different?). I was going to ask him but wasn’t sure if someone else had. “Hey Coyote. Cool tie!” I say casually. Shoot. Was that a mistake?

I shuffle into the ball room, fiddling with the hem of my sleeve. I smile nervously at the CBers who have already arrived - Viola?, Coyotedomino, HoodedMidnight and Artimerxx, and I think I see Rogue Wildling up in the ceiling somewhere. I look down at my feet and notice how glossy the floor is and wonder how far I would be able to slide on my knees. Maybe later... I think, pushing the thought away. Not really knowing where to go, I wander aimlessly past the breathtaking grande piano, until what's missing in this room hits me. I clear my throat.

"Does anyone want to dance? I can put some music on."

I turn around in time to see a girl in a flowy blue dress skip in. She turns to me.

“Hey coyote. Cool tie!”

”Oh! Thank you. I like your dress.” I adjust my tie again. Nervous habit. “Pretty intensely fancy building, isn’t it? Sorta intimidating.”

”Oh, yes, it’s pretty amazing.” We both look around at the grandeur surrounding us. I see Coroline walk hesitantly in through the entrance, and I wave my right hand and salute her.

“Sorry, I don’t know why I do that... I wonder what that pool-pond-thing is for”, I say, nodding towards the far side of the room. “Do you think we can swim in it?”

(Sure, most nicknames are fine!)

I hesitate a chuckle, a don’t want to seem rude but...That pond looks frozen over not for swimming. “CD, I think that pond is frozen over and for maybe...skating?”

“O-oh.”, he says nervously.

“Let’s investigate!” I say, taking his arm and pulling him over to the pond.

It seemed smaller from so far away but now I realize that it extends for miles and miles outside the building. Next to a small hedge is a white and gold rack carrying white satin and red satin skates. I grab two pairs and hold one of them out to CD, “Wanna try?”.

I run in and search around frantically for my partners. Before I can look for long, I hear someone yelling from behind me.

"Hey! AW!"

I turn around. It takes me a minute to find the speaker, but when I notice her waving, I start laughing. It's Rogue, who's sitting in the rafters wearing a ninja outfit (not suprising). "Hey, Rogue!" I call up. "Hey, seen Starseeker? Or Vyolette? Or Coroline? I'm supposed to be meeting them."

Rogue points to a girl in a red dress. "There's Coroline," she says.

"Cool! Hey, do you have a partner?" I ask. "Do you want to hang with me until the rest of my group shows up? I kinda wanna wait until the rest of them show up before I approach anyone."

She shrugs. "Fine with me," she says.

"How did you get up there, by the way?" I ask her.

"I climbed the vines," she says, shrugging.

I glance at the vines, which are suddenly more intimidating. I kinda wish I had Night with me right now-- telekinesis would be useful. I place my hand on my phone, hidden in the pocket of the black hoodie I wore over my dress to get here (it's so freaking cold outside!) and briefly think about calling Night... no, that's stupid.

"I'm on my way up," I call to Rogue, and begin to climb the vines.

"Oh my claws, I'm late!"

Zoey sighs and scoots off the counter, landing silently on the floor. She walks over to me and gently straightens my necklace. I meet her eyes in the mirror I'm standing in front of, twisting my hands in my black and gold dress. She takes me by the shoulders and spins me around to face her, keeping her hands on my shoulders and looking deep into my eyes.

"Starseeker," she says, "Get yourself together."

I blow out a puff of breath. "You're right, I'm sorry. I'm just worried."

"If anyone, it's me who should be worried," Zoey says, letting go of my shoulders and nudging her way past me to look in the mirror. She pats her hair and then tucks her navy blue shirt tighter in her black skinny jeans. "I'm the one having a movie night with Trevor. You're just hanging out at a ball with a buncha people you already know."

"Yeah, but... I'm still worried!" I burst out. "Even with no reason."

This time, it's Zoey who blows out a breath. She's known me long enough, been a part of me long enough, to know that I'll worry about things even when she tells me not to.

"Ready to go?" she asks me, and I nod, taking one last glance in the mirror before taking her proffered hand. The world bends around us for a moment, and then we're standing outside of Vy's house in the CB world. Trevor stands up from where he's been leaning against the doorframe and smiles at us.

"Heya, Zo. Good to see you, Star," he says, though he smiles at me only briefly before turning to Zoey.

"Good to see you too," I say as Vy bursts out her front door.

"Agh, sorry, I'm ready now!" she calls to us, tugging on her cream-coloured flats. She joins us by her front door, saying a quick hello to Zoey before turning to Trevor.

"Now, you know where the popcorn is, right? And the good blankets are in my room in that one drawer, and--"

"Yes, I know," Trevor says patiently. "We've been over this. I live here, Vy."

Vy grins and pats him on the shoulder. Although she's tall, he's taller, and she raises on her tiptoes to reach.

"I know you know, I'm just making sure," she says.

Zoey rolls her eyes at Trevor good-heartedly. "CBers," she mutters, poking him in the side. He laughs.

"We actually do need to go, though," Zoey continues, checking her watch before flipping her wrist and letting it disappear again. "Our Marvel movie marathon won't wait, and you both have a ball to go to."

"Right! Right, sorry," I say, then turn to Vy. "Vy, you ready?"

"Always," she affirms, and we link hands. Zoey flicks her hands at us, and the world dissolves around Vy and me, leaving us with a last image of Zoey and Trevor waving. The world stops spinning and deposits Vy and me in a grand ballroom, full of CBers of all ages an sizes. I spot AW shimmying up a vine to the rafters where Rogue sits, Viola talking to Rogue, Artimerrx by the food table, coyotedomino and HoodedMidnight heading out towards a frozen lake, and Coroline by the fringes of the room.

I glance at Vy and smile, and she grins back.

"Let the fun begin!" I say.

”Uhh... Well. Okay. I haven’t skated in at least a year, though, so...”

I take the pair of beautiful white skates that Hooded is offering me and check the bottom.

“They don’t seem to have a size on them. I wonder...”

She glances at me. “Magic sizing?”

“Guess we should try them on, huh?”

We sit down on the (overly fanciful) bench nearby to put them on. Of course they fit. I flex my foot experimentally and find the skates to be among the most comfortable shoes I’ve ever worn, despite having metal blades attached to the bottom.

Hooded steps cautiously onto the ice and slides forward a few feet. She turns around and gestures for me to join her. “Come on, it’s perfect! You’ll do fine.”

”You sure it’s thick enough? I don’t wanna fall through...”

She stomps on the ice and I wince. “Certainly seems strong”, she says.

”Okay. One sec.” I pull out a pair of light blue earmuffs and put them on. “I wasn’t sure if I should get blue or pink ones, but I decided on these. Anyway, I guess now I’m ready.” I step out onto the ice and immediate begin to slip. I flail my arms and regain my balance, but now I’m blushing. “Like I said...”

”Ah, it’s fine. You’ll get the hang of it.”

CD almost falls. "Oops!" I grab his arms and prop him up, "Got ya!" I say relived. His face is bright red and I can't help but laugh.

"What?!" he says

"It's just...*wheeze*, You-You *wheeze* Sort of resemble a tomato right now!" I gasp for air as I laugh. "Don't take that the wrong way! I'm sorry!"
