God may have wanted to have that distinction because naturally born females are weaker than naturally born (healthy) men of the same age, therefore it would be beneficial for both if the woman did her part and the man his, the man having the tougher work like (historically) hunting.

However, for more modern families, the most simple explanation would be that both members of a marriage are supposed to play their parts (the man being the head of the marriage but still consulting his wife in decisions [therefore respecting her] and the woman respecting her husband in the same way). Had I given the context, both you, ... and ~, would have understood better and not acted the way you did.
