I went to see it and really liked it, but I don't know anything about the original.

Ah, explains it. The main difference is the Squip; in the original, the Squip is a real antagonist, very intimidating and such. In the Broadway remake he's. . . A dudebro.

I don't know much about the remake, but I've heard the Squip has been altered a lot. However, I absolutely ADORE Jason Tam and don't think I'm capable of disliking him in any context. :P

He's got a really nice singing voice and I don't blame him on the change at all, but what on earth did they do to the Squip?!  Just listen to both versions of The Squip Enters, and just...agh, the difference! In the first the Squip sounds like he could be the antagonist. He's well put together.

In the second, dudebro. The Keanu Reeves thing was a joke that got mentioned twice in the original; a throwaway joke for the audience to laugh at. But when you make the main antagonist of the show the actual joke, just for sake of paying attention to detail...well, it doesn't go well.

I was annoyed at first that the ending was changed so drastically in the play, but then I realized that it's the kind of play where you have to have a happy ending where everything turns out perfectly.  But I still didn't like that they changed it, so I've come to the conclusion that it just shouldn't have been made into a play in the first place.
