Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Not a huge

Not a huge deal, but could we here on the CB work a bit on our politeness skills? No need to be picky but I've noticed a few instances of impoliteness lately where people haven't really been respecting other people in how they do what they do on the CB. We all have our own styles of how we do things on the CB, some may still be adjusting, and we should be patient, not rude or bossy.

Like I said, not a huge deal. Thank youuuuuu. Smile Wink

I 100% agree, Cerinthe! I was going to make a thread about it myself but you beat me to it. I think it would be good for us all to take a deep breath and remember that everyone you talk to here is a REAL PERSON on the other side of that screen. The internet makes it easy to forget that sometimes, but a good rule of thumb would be: If you wouldn’t say it to someone’s face in real life, don’t say it to them online.

For example, let’s say someone was supposed to judge an art contest and it’s been a day or two after the judging date and no dice. You’re frustrated because you worked hard on your piece and you want to see if your work pays off. You could make an angry or blunt post demanding them to judge, OR you could think: Hmm. Maybe they’re really busy. Maybe they have a five page english essay due tomorrow and don’t have time to get on CB. And then remind them, but do it without aggressiveness— passive or otherwise.

Also, it is harder to read TONE over the internet. You may say something that in real life would be perfectly polite, but online the way you punctuate it can make it seem critical or sarcastic. Let’s say a new CBer has messed up some terminology and called their post a “solo write” when they really mean RP. Take these two examples of commments:

1) “Um... do you mean a RP??? Because this does NOT look like a solo write at all...”

2) “This is a super cool idea! Do you mean for this to be a RP or a solo write? Here’s a link to the Ultimate Guide Thread that talks about the difference!”

In essence they say the same thing. But if you made that slip up, which comment would you rather receive in reply? All the examples I’ve mentioned here are things I’ve seen across CB. I think we can all benefit from thinking a little more before we post. Love you guys <3

I agree with you, Cerinthe! Patience is key! Respect and kindness are essential!

Also, I'd like to thank you for bringing this up. It took a lot of courage to point this out, and I take off my hat to you.
