Instruments/Music!

Do you guys play any instruments? I'm a drummer! I can also sort of play guitar and ukelele, and by "play" I mean I know 6 or so chords and can look up tablature online. XD Previously I have played piano (when I was really young), cello, and a brief stint with flute. I stopped playing those instruments because I literally cannot read sheet music. I'm pretty sure I have music dyslexia, if that's a thing. I get the concept and how it works, but I just can't do it. I used to play songs by memorising the entire thing when my teacher played it.

If anyone else has music dyslexia I would highly recommend drums. It's so much fun and you don't have to read any music. Also, you can play a lot of modern, popular songs which I personally enjoy more than classical.

Anyway, I'd love to hear what instruments you play and any cool music stories!

I play the violin. I use the Suzuki method, and am on book 4. There are 10 books. I know a little piano, but can’t play in bass clef.

I have played piano for 7 years and cello for 3. I love music! If I could learn to play another instrument, it would be the viola.

I have played piano when I was younger but I could probably still pick it up.again. Now I play the ukulele and might want to try guitar. I've never heard of music dyslexia, although for ukulele I don't really use sheet music anyway.

Hey, I'm a drummer too! *high-fives* Well, kind of. I haven't learned the drum set yet, but since I'm a percussionist at school I can do all kinds of stuff. I did a few years of piano prior to band, so that really helped with mallets/marimba/bells and all that!

I can also do about 6 chords on the guitar, and I used to know how to play all the individual notes, but I've mostly forgotten by now. XD

*High fives back* That's awesome! I always think percussion is the most fun because you get to hit stuff. I play on a drum set but I can also play some mediocre snare rhythms.

Haha, right? I always explain it as "hitting stuff with sticks". XD I've wanted to learn the drum set literally forever! Whenever I saw one when I was little, I would just stare at it. Now I have an electric one in my basement! The only thing I know how to play on it is a basic boots & cats, though. XD

Hello~!

I played the piano for a few years when I was younger but I lost interest in it. I'm staring to pick piano back up again but really slowly. I've been playing the clarinet for two years and I've really been enjoying it! I played the violin for about a year but also lost interest in it. The violin was really hard for me and I struggled a lot with it, dropping it within the process. I might pick up the violin again, maybe dropping the clarinet.

I play the trumpet, and I like to think that I'm pretty good at it. I guess the less-talented trumpet players in my band make me feel better about myself. I also had a three or four year run with the viola, which took me a long time to realize it really wasn't my strong suit. But anyway, my musical talent ends there.

I play a little piano, but I only do it over the summer.

2 years ago, I played percussion in band, but I didn't like it very much so I switched to clarinet. I now have been playing the clarinet for 2 years.

I also sing. To be honest, that is really my main 'instrument'. I have been singing since I was little, and I still love it.

I picked up clarinet in August when I joined my school band. I'm fourth chair in my period, about twelfth chair in my grade, and twentieth in my school (my school band has about three hundered people. Our clarinet section is maybe forty kids.) I actually would be better at playing the flute, but I play clarinet instead because I REALLY like the way it sounds. I can't play piano, but I can figure out where middle C is easily, and I play memorized bits of songs and exercises. My school band is really big (my grade is about a hundered kids alone), and it's such a loving community.

Wow! Our band is really small. In 7/8 band, there are about 7 clarinets. XD

I play saxophone and recorder (because music makes us do "recorder karate").

I also sing (not that I have lessons. People do say my voice is really nice though.)

A story: Once at band practice we were starting a song then about halfway through this really jokey trombone player's slide just FELL OFF. I heard a clang then when I had a rest turned around saw him trying to push it back on. I couldn't even finish the song I was laughing so hard.

Hi!

I have played piano for seven or eight years now, and I love it! Currently my favorite composer is Mendelssohn, but I also love playing songs from musicals. I'm currently working on the accompaniment for A Million Dreams from Greatest Showman.

I have sung with a choir for nine years, and I love that too! I'm currently a first soprano, but that could change in the future. We're actually singing an arrangement of A Milllion Dreams, which is really fun because we get to learn all of the melodies, including a really fun descant! I was listening to music the other day, and A Million Dreams came on, so I sang along. (In harmony.) The concert we're prepping for has the theme of Stories, so we get to sing some other songs from musicals, including Children will Listen from Into the Woods, and You Will be Found from Dear Even Hanson.

I have also started taking organ lessons! They are really fun, but it takes a lot of coordination to play both the manuals, (The keyboards) and the pedels. Anyone else play organ?

Hummingbird, please keep up especially with the organ lessons, if you can! I think there's a great demand for church organists. A good one is hard to find!

That's so cool that you can play organ! I love the sound of organ and I've never met anyone who could play it. Just curious, do you take lessons at a church or concert hall? Or maybe you have a whole organ at home, I don't know... XD
