Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Happiness amidst

Happiness amidst fear and despair

So, I don’t know about anyone else, but this whole coronavirus thing is really getting me down. I’m worried I’m going to get it; I’m worried my family is going to get it; I’m worried our whole world is going to be in lockdown far into the future... I could go on. But every so often I see or do or hear something that makes me really happy, and I can almost forget about everything else for a moment.

On this thread, you can share things that have made you happy or things that you think will make other people happy. You can share random thoughts or jokes or art or anything, really, so long as it’s positive.

For example... my mom baked cookies a few days ago, and we got to eat them as soon as they came out of the oven, and they were REALLY good!!! Another day, I put on these elf ears I got for my Halloween costume a few years ago, and I wore them to virtual school. I got some funny looks. XD

What things have made you happy recently?

I'm taking a walk every day and noting the changing signs of spring as I go. First crocuses were blooming. Now hyacinths and other flowers. I've seen a cardinal darting in and out of an evergreen bush where it seems to be building a nest. I hear lots of birds, too, cardinals, robins, and more, and squirrels are busy darting around. AND: I just posted all the prizewinning and honorable mention stories from the January 2020 Cricket League Work of Art or Artist story contest at cricketmagkids.com/contests. I marvel at the creativity and writing skill of Cricket readers. So everyone can read them and get lost in the world of art!

I know this sounds kind of shallow, but I downloaded a HP game on my phone a few days ago, and it's super fun! Spellbound and I are having fun preparing dinners and chronicling all of our shenanigans. Oh, and my mom grabbed a bunch of books from a library before everything shut down, so I've been plowing through so many good books!

Hey, me too! I love having a huge stack of books, and right before the libraries closed, my mom and little sister (who knew?) found a huge stack of the Olympians graphic novels ( they're amazing) that I got to reread! It's actually pretty fun to just stay at home and read all day. Well...yeah I do school work too...but its not as interesting. Definitely reading has brought me joy these past weeks. And I guess weeks to come. Reading is really awesome because you can escape from wherever you happen to be and go somewhere completely different! ( I mean, except if you're reading Fever by Laurie Hale's Anderson) ha, ha.

I go on a lot of bike rides. The are really relaxing. It's nice to get away from the crazy confinement of my house and my family and just BE. Also, I just started rereading Children of Blood and Bone, and I love the feeling you get when you open up one of your favorite books after a long time apart. And I had really good muffins for breakfast.

I recently bought myself (using gift money) the entire Ranger's Apprentice series! It's one of my favorite series of all time, and I agree, PygmyOwl, it feels so good to return to a book you love!

I rewatched Avengers: Age of Ultron last weekend! It honestly is such a good Marvel movie, and it's underrated because it's overshadowed by Infinity War and Endgame.

Yesterday I picked up some things I had ordered from Michael's. I love doing arts and crafts, so I'm really happy that I got them. Plus, they gave me another thing to do!

Me and my dad went for a nice 7 mile bike ride yesterday, it was a beautiful day! After that, we went to lunch! It was really relaxing and fun!

Yesterday I was helping my 82-year-old neighbor in her garden. She is a highly educated and very interesting person. She is also very lively and strong for an old lady. Her garden is also gorgeous, which helped to lift my spirits.

(ps, we were outside the whole time and stayed social distanced, so don't worry)

I've been rereading the Land of Stories series and wow, I forgot that it's so good! I built some legos, I have this Hogwarts set that's really cool.

I was given quite a few books to read for Christmas, and haven't had much time on my hands to read through them. Now I have a whole stack of books to read!
