Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Daydreams Cafe

Daydreams Cafe

~~~
You slowly wander down Thread Lane, looking for things to do. A small fistfight breaks out in an alleyway and you steer yourself in the other direction, not wanting trouble.
The smell of cookies and fragrant tea fill your senses and you follow the smells toward a new building, a small two-story cafe painted pale pink. Clean white curtains hang in the sparkling windows, pots of delicate flowers are positioned next to new wooden benches. The smell of cookies is stronger now, and you can also detect traces of cake and vanilla. A small wooden sign hangs over the open door, reading in neat block letters, Daydreams Cafe. You smile softly and decide to give this place a try. So, slowly, you step in through the door.
Honeybee, Pygmy, and I are furiously typing and scribbling in our notebooks, trying to beat our word sprint goals.
"Mind if I sit here?" A voice says, and I'm broken out of my trance. I look up and see Snazzycakes, laptop and baked goods in hand.
"The more the merrier!" I say, and gesture to the open spot at our booth. Suddenly, a loud ping! comes from somebody's laptop, making us all jump.
"Oh," I say. "Looks like I just got the ten percent badge," We all laugh, and return to writing.
Jubilee invites Nightfall and me over to their table. I see that they have a sketchbook. I pull mine out of my bag.
"We're like the only people in here not working on NaNo," I say.
"Guess we'd better find some way to be productive," Jubilee laughs. Luckily, Nightfall brought her sketchbook too, so we all settle down to draw quietly together.
I accept Jubilee's offer, and we sit down at a quiet table, all drawing. I really don't pay attention. I debate with myself on whether or not to use watercolors. After a quiet mind debate, I reach into my bag and pull out some colored pens that I can ink with. After a while, I examine my art. It's good enough. I return the pens and switch them for a watercolor pad.
I glance around. Everyone's doing NaNo. *quiet laughing* I finished for today.
I walk into the seemingly new Daydreams Cafe, on the phone with my friend, Sammy Everlast.
"Look Sam, this is serious. If Freak got a hold of this, the world will burn." I said to her, sitting down at a table. The cafe was actually really cute, it seems like something Timber Wolf would like.
"That doesn't give you the right to break into my HOUSE and STEAL it!" Sammy argued on the other end, "Listen here you Aussie, I will search every known thread until I find you, you little-"
I hung up to keep the CB family-friendly.
Lucky for me, Sam didn't know about this thread yet, and neither did Freak. No one in The Gang did, really.
I hid the briefcase as I ordered.
"I'll have the Pumpkin Spice Cake, thank you."
I then got a text from Anonymous Goat;
"Why is Sam hiring literally all my AEs to look for you?"
Great. The mummies are after me now. Looks like I'll be here a while...
Once more, I walk into the Cafe, not remembering ever leaving. My thick sweater chafes against my arms, but it's so warm, and I can't bear to take it off when all I have under it is a short sleeved t-shirt. I will suffer through the pain of wool if it means being warm.
I walk up toward the counter once more, and order my usual, two Procrastination Prevention Muffins and a large mug of Positivitea. It's supposed to help with NaNo, and I certainly need some help, I'm thousands of words behind. And it doesn't help that I have about three ideas for ski lodges, solo writes, and other novels, and am behind on two RPs.
No. I shake my head, trying to get away from the pity party. I'm here to get things done, not internally yell at myself for being behind. I take a large bite of my muffin and take a new seat, by myself this time, to eliminate the distractions. If, of course, you don't count K.A.D.E. getting threatened as a distraction. I take another bite and type a few words, before opening Magicae Palace. I'm so close to finishing reading it... only about half an hour... surely I can write once I finish that.
Daydreams Cafe. I hesitantly push the door open with a pleasant ringing from the bells to signal my arrival. People are clustered in tables, laughing and talking over pastries. A group near one of the windows is sketching, and another is typing on their keyboards, occasionally stopping to make a comment to their friends. I order a Fall Flower Bar and Optimist Hot Chocolate, then turn and akwardly stand, unsure where to sit. There are no more tables that are completley empty, and I'm too new to the CB to ask anyone to sit with them. I know a few of these people vaugley, but I am too shy to talk to them. I stand there, debating with myself for so long that Miss Plum notices and offers me a seat near the counter. I accept thanfully and wait until she comes out with my order, and I notice she even slid in a Motivation Cookie that I didn't pay for. I read for my laptop in my bag, only to knock my cup of steaming Optimist Hot Chocolate over, spilling it all over the floor. A few heads turn to my direction, and my face burns as I drop to my knees to clean it up with napkins. So much for making a good first impression, Silver.
I sit at my table, tapping my purple fountain pen against the golden wood of my table. I know I ought to be writing, but I have a severe case of writer's trickle, and it's much more interesting to look through the windoe and watch the fire-colored leaves fall from their trees. They are so much more vibrant here than at home. I plug a pair of of earbuds into my laptop and open my list Liked Songs. Soon, I am loudly humming along to "On My Own" and "First Burn," drawing a few strange looks from the other customers. I am about to get completely sucked into a vortex of looped music, when I hear a crash. I look up to see what is going on.
A new CBer, Silver Crystal, has spilled her hot chocolate all over the floor and is attempting to clean it up with a handful of silk napkins. They're pretty, and good for wiping off a milk mustache, but not the thing for a big spill. I can see her face burning, and I wince in sympathy. That can't be fun.
Closing my computer, I rush to the bathroom and take a roll of paper towels from their dispenser. Then, I return to the main cafe area, where I bend down and press a wad of the brown paper against the mess.
"Hi," I say. "You're Silver Crystal, right? I saw your introduction. I'm Morning, I'm here to attempt to write a novel. What brought you to the cafe?"
"What brought you to the cafe?" The girl, Morning, asks as she bends down to help me with my disasterous spill. (I'm assuming you are a girl, Morning, appologies if I get that wrong).
"I don't know," I respond, keeping my eyes on where I'm trying to help her clean my mess up. I'm not quite over my shyness yet. "I guess I just kind of got turned around and ended up here. It's a bit confusing here at first."
She nods and we spend a few minutes in silence, stopping only when the floor is clear of the spoils of my clumsiness. Only then do I recognize the music leaking from her earbuds looped around Morning's neck.
"Is that First Burn?" I ask her.
She smiles. "Yup. I had that and On My Own on repeat for a while until you showed up."
"Oh yeah, I remember you posting something about On My Own a few days ago," I say excitedly. It's not often that I run into someone who loves musicals as much as I do. "It's one of my favorite songs in Les Mis, and honestly First Burn is such a great song, I think they should have kept it in the musical, though I love the other version on Burn, too." I know I should probably stop talking before I start ranting about more songs, but the fact that Morning is nodding and still smiling gives me a sudden burst of confidence that allows me to momentarily overcome my shyness. "D-do you think I could, um, sit with you, maybe?"
A/N: So Freak wants in on this, but he's too lazy to write an intro for himself... So here. Also, The Gang made a thing called "Sammy Censor", in which we act like Sammy Everlast hijacks our posts to make words family-friendly. (See Freak's sentence.)
---------
I sat there awkwardly, picking at my food, when I heard someone drop something.
I looked up, seeing a new CBer, Silver Crystal, attempt to wipe up her spilled drink.
I averted my eyes, realizing that the last thing anyone would want was someone staring at them after they embarrassed themselves.
I felt sorry for the girl. I've honestly never embarrassed myself on the CB before, but I've heard plenty of Sammy's stories about the horror of embarrassing yourself when you're new around here.
All of a sudden, a black and white vortex opened in front of me.
"GIMME THE {Heck}ING BREIFCASE K.A.D.E.!"
Oh no. I know that annoying, swearing Brooklyn-accented voice anywhere.
Freak dashed out of the vortex, then started wrestling me for the case.
(Yes, I'm a girl, thanks for checking!)
Silver Crystal asks if she can sit with me.
"Sure!" I respond, motioning toward my seat. "I was trying to get some writing done, but you saw how well that went, so I might as well enjoy myself. I agree, First Burn is so beautiful and powerful, but so is the Burn that they ended up with, in a different way. I honestly don't know which one I like more." I pause. "So, Silver. Is it okay if I can you that? It feels more-namey when I'm talking. Do you have a favorite musical?"
She opens her mouth and looks like she is about to answer, when a — portal? vortex? — opens up in front of K.A.D.E. Then Freak rushes out and begans wrestling with K.A.D.E. I look over at Silver Crystal in wonderment. This is... very different from the Cafe a few days ago, during my last visit. Then again, it's not exactly unpleasant to see something exciting going on. I struggle to hold back a laugh. There is no end of amusment to be gained from the antics of this gang.
"LET... GO-!" K.A.D.E. yelled, attempting to kick me off of him.
"NOT UNTIL… YOU GIVE ME… THE CASE!"
The fight continued for a while, consisting of petty insults and colorful language.
At least, until that person, dragged me off of K.A.D.E..
"What are you doing!?" The person asked angrily.
I hurry down Thread Lane towards the rosy pink awning of my new favorite bakery. Having just got back from camping, I'm looking forward to being able to write NaNo again. And Daydreams Cafe is the perfect place to do it. Looking forward to it's cozy, peaceful atmosphere, I push open the door... And am met with a scene of chaos.
The cafe is mostly empty, save for Morning and Silver Crystal sitting together at a nearby table, and, of course, there's the K.A.D.E. vs. Freak fighting match going on that's taking up most of the availible floorspace. I quickly take a few steps back to avoid a flying elbow, narrowly missing a nearby table. Miss Plum is trying to calm them down with a motherly look and a stern admonishing, but Freak keeps yelling (in a Brooklyn accent?), "THAT BRIEFCASE IS MINE, K.A.D.E!" and K.A.D.E keeps yelling "NEVER! YOU'RE GOING DOWN!" and no one can hear themselves think. I clench my jaw. I don't like fighting. I don't even like to argue! But these two are clearly going to do some real damage unless someone tries to stop them.
Stepping back, I study the two CBers. Freak is trying to grab something from K.A.D.E., probably that briefcase they were yelling about earlier. K.A.D.E is trying to simultaenously get away and punch Freak in the face. What exactly they're fighting over and why, I have no idea. I would leave them to it, but they've already smashed a vase of what were some really lovely daffodils, and a nearby table has a crack running down its length. I make up my mind. I've gotta step in.
"Hey!" I yell as loud as I can, striding towards the wrestling pair. "You two are destroying this cafe! Take your little showdown somewhere else!"
A showdown is happening. Snazzy yells at them, and I join in. If she can, I can as well.
"Listen. K.A.D.E. Freak. Stop. This. Right. Now." I give them my coldest and most ferocious death glare, a steely glint in my eyes as I advance toward them.
"You are ruining the peace, the quiet of this cafe, and if you can't stop fighting, get out this moment, this is a peaceful cafe, not a fighting blood-stained battleground."
