Hi I have a question! I really don’t mean to offend anyone, I’m just curious. If gender is just a social construct, how does somebody decide they’re nonbinary? Again, I don’t want to offend anybody and I’m sorry if I did.

Hey, Anon! This is a valid question, I definitely know gender can be very confusing! I'm happy to explain to the best of my ability. Gender is a social construct, but that doesn't mean that it's not real or important. Money, race, time, culture, and society are all social constructs that are very importatant to our lives.

In my opinion, gender is a very complicated thing and it is very open and fluid. Nobody "decides" their gender, it's just a part of who they are. It takes a while to figure out your gender and decide if you want to come out, use different pronouns, or change your name. Gender is about the cultural and social ways that we perceive people. Nonbinary people feel like they aren't fully a boy or a girl. A lot of nonbinary like to use they/them pronouns or other non-binary pronouns (for example xe/xem). Pronouns don't nessacily equal gender, but for a lot of people, they do. Nonbinary people might figure out thier gender by realizing they don't feel comfortable with binary pronouns, they might experience gender dysphoria(this is when you feel like your body doesn't match your gender), or other reasons. It's important to listen to trans people and respect their pronouns/name because misgendering can cause depression or worse. I'm nonbinary and use she/they pronouns. I don't feel comfortable with my given name so I use a gender-netrual nickname, I also don't really like having long hair(because it's hard to manage and too feminine for me). That's obviously just my experience.

A lot of things are gendered and there are definitely some things that shouldn't be gendered. A really important part to know is that trans people aren't holding up gendered stereotypes by being trans. For every trans women who dresses and acts stereotypcially feminine, there is another trans woman who dresses more androgynous/masculine. Every trans person has a different experience with gender. Get rid of gender roles, but respect gender respect.

This is super long and I'm not sure how well I explained this. This isn't directed completely at you, you didn't do anything wrong but I did want to make sure that no one could take this the wrong way.

Hey, Lizards. I was wondering if you could help me with something? I really want to change my name, but I don't know how to diside. I mean, I've had my birth name for 11 FROGGING YEARS. I'm not sure it's really me, though. I want to start new.

I'm leaning towards a name that has to do with writing (Fable, Lore, or Quill, for example) or a name with a cool meaning (Novalie, Viho, or Zaira). Maybe just a quick and easy one (Joss, Knox, or Nez). Oh, or a super rare name (Inej, Pip, Luca).

ANYWAY, you can see I am obbsessed with names. I should stop there, so I don't go on forever. Thanks, if you answer. :)

Fable is a very cool name, so is Novalie. I really like Pip, too. Good luck with your name!

My favorite is Novalie, because a) it has a cool meaning, like you said and b) it kind of sounds like "novel" as in "book" and you said you were consitering a name that had to do with writing.

But if I were you, I'd choose something that is not too difficult to spell or pronounce, and something you can see yourself still liking when you're older, you know?

Well I'm obsessed with names too so I don't think I'll be much help selecting a name, but if you come to a decision, let me know! :D
