Debating Thread!

Yeah, probably no one knows who I really am. If you do, don't say. Anyways, this is a thread for Debating! I'll let you guys do the rest! I have actually seen something that could be debated!

The word SUS. Some people find it annoying, some people don't. Debate that if you want. I will never take a side of that.

Banning mobile devices from schools?? Terrible idea. You know that period of time in America where alcohol was banned and alcohol consumption actually increased but it was just illegal? Yeah, that's how it would be. I know for a fact that the kids I go to high school with would not care at all if there was a mobile phone ban; they'll either ignore it or protest or something. And frankly, it's a stupid rule. We use phones all the time in class, for example if our laptops die and we need another device. Sure, they can be a little distracting, but banning them would be pointless. Plus, my school doesn't have lockers, so where would we even put them?

Feel free to argue!

Homework should not be banned.

The reason homework exists is to reinforce necessary concepts. For example, if you want to learn Spanish or French or ASL, just the time in class won't be enough; you have to practice as much as possible because learning a language involves memorization. Or, if you are learning multiplication, you won't memorize the tables up to ten times ten (necessary for very large calculations) unless you put in lots of work.

Another reason is that, in many schools, the classes are large, with lots of kids. There isn't a lot of time for each person to learn. Homework can help this problem.

I agree that homework should not be banned, but teachers should be respectful of students' time. Please don't ask us to write a five paragraph essay in one night, or do all the problems in a chapter in three nights. Homework is good, and it helps students to learn, but some teachers don't know where to stop and that's a problem.

I'm arguing against saying that artificial intellegence will help humanity.

Fair warning: in this paragraph I might seem really agressive but it's just for fun

OKAY HOLD UP.  FIRST of all, IRON MAN IS AMAZING.  Okay, he has his moments and he can be a real idiot sometimes, but overall he's a good character.  I like seeing his moments of insecurity underneath all that cool & collected sarcasm.  It makes him more three dimensional.

SECOND OF ALL.  Don't get me wrong, I love Captain America & Bucky.  (Bucky's amazing.) BUT.  On signing the Sokovia Accords:

The Avengers were killing hundreds of people.  HUNDREDS OF INNOCENT CIVILIANS. (Civillians?) And something NEEDED to happen.  Having the government in charge of that wasn't awesome, but it was a first step.  There needed to be a first step.

Steve Rogers didn't sign it because We'Re ThE aVeNgErS wE lIkE fReEdOm AmErIcA hEcK yEaH and it's SO ANNOYING AND WHAT THE HECK YOU'RE MURDERING PEOPLE THAT IS NOT OKAY.

And he wanted to keep people from killing Bucky.  He must have killed dozens in the process of rescuing him.  (Even though I'm glad he's alive because COME ON, BUCKY FREAKING BARNES.)

When he was like, "you've been busy" and Stark was like "YEAH AND YOU'VE BEEN A COMPLETE IDIOT (wow, amazing comeback there) I'M TRYING TO KEEP THE AVENGERS FROM FALLING APART." He said, "You did that when you signed." Right, Captain America, because you're soooo right on everything.  He said it in such a righteous way, too, and that was NO THANK YOU.

Oh!  And Zemo instigated that big boss fight at the end between Bucky and Stark and him, he almost did the EXACT SAME THING that fake Captain America did in Falcon & the Winter Soldier- SMASH A HEAD IN WITH THAT SHIELD.  Stark deflected it to his armor, of course, but still.

I hate his costume and motif too.  "CaPtAiN aMeRiCa..." it sounds like, "my country's all freedom and stuff here to save yours" and, like, America's not AWFUL, but we've had our fair share of difficulties.  The Declaration of Independence, for example- a few guys ranting about how they need freedom.  AND EVERY ONE OF THEM OWNED SLAVES. WHAT. THE. HECK.

All the Cap hate over here, but I actually do like him as a character, but not in Civil War.

Anyway, bottom line: THEY WERE MURDERING HUNDREDS OF INNOCENTS.  What the Sokovia Accords accomplished wasn't the ideal, but it was a first step they could work off of.  And something NEEDED to change.  And a muscley dude in America pajamas ranting about freedom as people die wasn't okay.

Anyways!  Hope you enjoyed my extremely aggressive but genuinely all for fun rant!

Okay well I've only watched like four Avengers movies, including Iron Man and Captain America, so idk. But I think Iron Man is a jerk sometimes, and makes dumb decisions, but he's still my favorite ever since he called Hawkeye Legolas xD

Am I a good debater? Either way, does anyone want to debate whether comics/manga are better than regualr books? If so, I want to take the side of comics/manga!

YES! IT SO IS! MANGA IS BETTER THAN ANY OTHER BOOK! I will debate anyone who says otherwise. I'd say fight but this isn't a fight thread, it's a debating thread.

I think it depends on the story being told, as it does with every media. I used to not like movies as much as books, because the movie adaptations of books weren't as good. But now I think that some storys are better as movies, some as books, and some as comics, and so on and so forth. That being said, I personally like regular books better than comics. It's just easier to process for me, because everything is in the same medium (As opposed to images and words) and I think time passing is easier to understand (Both time jumps and also I just can never understand which panel I'm supposed to read first in a comic. Although part of that probably comes from expierence). But I can understand why someone would like comic books, especially if they have dyslexia or just don't like reading. Right now I have a story in my head that I think would be so good as a comic book, but I can't draw very well so I don't think that will ever come to fruition.

(Ok, super long post about banning homework- sorry, Admin.)

I think any kid who has been forced to run on the treadmill of the education system would agree with this statement- homework needs to change. And while parents and educators continuously wave our pleas off as ‘laziness’ there is actually a lot more credibility to this claim than they think. Numerous studies have shown that homework does not add any academic value to an education, especially in younger children. Teachers claim that they assign homework to check in on how kids learn at home, without the support of teachers, but this reasoning is flawed. Teachers are there to support us, to guide us through the challenges of school. It’s not fair to take them away. For many kids who struggle with school, homework is just another sign telling them to give up. They stop caring about their academic performance, or even drop out of school. This is the exact opposite of homework’s intent, and it has a very harmful impact.

There is so much more to life than education, and let’s face it- academia is so thoroughly impractical, it’s a wonder we devote so much time to it in our modern world. Kids need exposure to all kinds of things, not just school, to grow up to become relatively stable adults. They need to

learn the practicalities of raising a family, caring for themselves, and speaking up in the face of injustice. They need to roll down a hill as Autumn leaves fall around them, and float in the sea as waves wash them ashore. Caring for themselves a little bit each day will improve their performance in school, too. They will be better rested, calmer, and more productive when the time comes for them to learn. Not only does homework eat up all their spare time, it makes them addicted to computer screens. Instead of spending time outside in the sun, soaking up Vitamin D, kids spend all their time indoors, face inches from a screen, and are far more likely to fall prey to mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression.

Whether or not we ban homework entirely, it’s clear a change in the system needs to happen now. Childhood is the time for kids to be curious, imaginative, and adaptable, and learn about themselves as well as others. With the onslaught of homework and technology, kids are essentially little mini-adults, just zombies who go about their work every day. Reduced homework will help kids live the best out of every day, and be the best versions of themselves. Don’t you want your children to live the life you never had?
