Languages Chat Thread!!

Talk about what you love about languages here!  It can be foreign languages, it can be "made-up" languages like Quenya, it could be what you love about English.  You can talk about what languages you know, what parts of languages are the hardest for you (the hardest part for me is remembering English words for learning Japanese- like I can never remember what a "clause" is, or (in)direct objects and sentence subjects and KSBGYKDBSGKSK) and what helps you be more efficient, and tricks you use to help you remember stuff, what languages you want to learn in the future

So yeah!

That's so cool! Wanna start a thread about it?

I  L O V E  making up langages, and building worlds around them! It'd be cool if we could help each other out, especially if you're also interested in fantastical world-building stuff~

I'm learning Turkish!!

Okay, that was an overstatement. I'm not really learning it, but my dad has a basic guidebook on how to speak Turkish, which he got when he took a trip to Turkey years ago, and it's so interesting! It tells you how to say lots of things in Turkish, and it also has the meanings of a huge amount of words and phrases in Turkish.I've been flipping through it now and again :)

Why can't I be interested in languages that would actually be useful, like Spanish and French, if I'm so fascinated by lesser-known languages like Turkish?

languages are awesome! i'm (kind of) currently learning finnish online but am not being super consistent about it. Next year in school i'll start learning Spanish. the online platform i'm using to learn Finnish isn't great though- it taught me how to say stuff like wizard before i knew how to say yes or no. i can say "i am a green wizard cat" but not stuff like "where am i?" but it's fine- i probably will not be visiting finland any time soon or maybe ever. but still fun to be able to say i know some finnish :D

I know some Spanish (I used to have a kidsitter who taught some to me, and then me and my dad were learning it on Duolingo during the thickest parts of COVID), and I'm trying to learn Scottish Gaelic. Something very annoying is that after about three seconds Duolingo kicks you out if you don't have an email address, and I don't have one; I am now using this other website that has lessons on it, but the lessons are extremely long.
Also, Gaelic pronunciation is very confusing!!! For instance, there is no letter v, so you have to get the sound from mh, bh, or some similar combination of letters, and then some words put an extra h into other words in the same sentences, drastically altering the way they're spoken.
I have never met anyone who speaks Gaelic in my life, so there's that, too--even though some of my ancestors were Scottish, they are dead and I have never met them.

Mn, Irish Gaelic is much the same. There are a lot of strangish letter combinations, although it's really nothing when compared to English, lol.

Also, if you'd like to get into a Gaelic speaking community, that may be difficult in-person (especially if you don't have the means to visit the motherland), but there are plenty of communities online! I know when I was getting lonely after moving from Ireland there were plenty of Irish-language enthusiasts that I used to talk (well, type) to for a while.

I mainly speak English, but I'm also learning Mandarin. I know quite a lot, but I'm still practicing reading it and writing it, and just generally speaking it more. Beside that, I don't really know anything else, though I might know hello in a few different languages, but that's about it. It's pretty interesting to see the different languages that everyone knows or is learning.
