Chatterbox: Inkwell

NEW STORY THREAD!

NEW STORY THREAD!

Okay, I know there's already a bunch in Inkwell right now, but I needed something new. The other ones are not moving or are too developed for me.

Here's my character: Nathaniel

Age: 13

Appearance: Normal looking by regualr standards, with plain brown hair and a gaunt look on his face.

Nathaniel was filled with a fiery rage. Why was it always HIM they decided was nothing special? He would show them! Nathaniel walked away from the building, not believing he had been rejected. It's not like EVERYONE can turn invisible! He filled out about fifteen applications, did one thousand pushups for them, and turn invisble. He couldn't believe they wouldn't let him into superhero school. Just because he couldn't fly.

Nathaniel didn't want to feel the rejection. He was not normal. He did not fit in with normal people. The truth that the people at Shane's Academy, also known as Superpoweed School, were telling him was that he didn't fit in with them either. He didn't fit in anywhere. He felt himslef unwittingly turn invisible and stalk down the road.

Don't feel afraid to use someone else's character or add something that doesn't really have anything to do with the plot!

Okay! So Elexhiia has never met our guys, that works with me! Nathaniel could be freaking out over a squirrel in Capes and Tights on Tuesday. He probably would.

"Which one of you is Nathaniel?"

Silence. No one dared move a muscle. Finally, Nathaniel stepped forward.

"What do you want?!" Nathaniel stepped forward, a gesture of defeat. "Honestly, it'd be nice if you'd get out of my life!"

The man looked, frankly, shocked. "I haven't really been in your life before this moment, have I?"

Nathaniel glanced over the man, trying to appear unfased by the whole situation. "No, not really. But you DO need to get out of it."

"Funny how youths decide things so fast," the man muttered.

"Humph," said Nathaniel, still trying to seem defiant. It really wasn't his true personality, he realised, seeing John stare at him out of the coner of his eye.

"Nathaniel, would you mind following me to my office?"

"Actually, yes, I would mind."

Whap! The man hit him, and not lightly, either. Nathaniel felt his arm shaking, and his knees slowly trembling.

"Brenson! See what the boy wants done with the other children," the man snapped. "Cartlin, make sure they don't go anywhere."

"Yes sir!" both men replied.

"If you need me," the man continued, "I'll be in my office. And if you need Nathaniel, I'm pretty sure he'll be acompaning me."

Nathaniel shuddered, and it was all he could do to nod his head.

Coolness! Okay..

Brooke/Gwen ~

I'd been sitting there for a little over half an hour. The guards had been running around, while somebody shouted orders. They reminded me a little of chickens with their heads cut off. I leaned against the wall, waiting. The door opened, and the leader of HUNT walked in. "I trust you'll be a little more accomodating now that your friends, one in paticular, will be joining you soon," he said, smiling in that cruel way. "Not likely," I muttered. Suddenly, one of his guards walked in, and muttered something to him. They both soon left. I lay there, praying Nathaniel had the sense to run, leave, that he hadn't come after me. Soon, the rucus outside died down. I couldn't hear anything. Suddenly, the office door swung open, and my heart stopped. The leader of HUNT walked in, along with Nathaniel...

Okay, I leave it open! Also, I think we should come up with a name for the leader of HUNT, cause it's kinda long to call him that.

The men quickly tied us up and led us to a small holding room. We looked around at each other. I wished there was a book I could crawl into, but the book we had taken in with us had fallen in the scuffle. I would try singing, but the only songs I had ever gone into required other instruments.

Someone, I think it was Charlotte, spoke up, "Wait, where's Storm?"

I knew Storm worked for HUNT, but the others didn't need to know. "He probably just ran away at the first opportunity. Storm only cares for his own skin," I spat bitterly.

"Maybe he can save us," John spoke up hopefully.

I tried to clear my head so the telekinetic kid couldn't barge in.

Quin spoke up, "Can anyone use their powers?"

Everyone tried, but found that they couldn't. The ropes must have been surpressing us. Well, even if I wasn't tied up, there wasn't much I could do. One of the men barged into the room and grabbed my arm. I shrieked in protest. Silently, he pulled my struggling body towards the door. He led me through a maze of hallways and suddenly deposited me outside in the grass and untied my hands.

"You have ten seconds to get away. Time starts now."

I ran like the wind, the words echoing in my head. It reminded me of the one ex-cop in UnWholly. What was his name? Nelson? Well, I didn't think this man had a tranq gun or any other for that matter, but it still could be rigged somehow.

Blood pounded in my ears and before I knew it, I was scrambling up the steps to Shane's Academy. Panting, I breezed through the doors, ignoring the secretary's curious glances, and ran for Storm's room. Lunch wasn't quite over yet, and if I made it in time...

I barged in and nearly ran right into Storm, exiting his room.

"What are you doing?" he asked. "Class is abou to start."

I doubled over, wheezing, and the moment I could speak I managed to gasp out, "You traitor!"

"You're not the one stuck in HUNT right now, so you can hardly complain," he announced over his shoulder, already walking to class.

I rushed after him. "That's not the point! You turned us all in!"

Without turning around, Storm adressed me calmly, "So? I will use anything to achieve my means."

I grabbed his shoulders and faced him. "You let those kids out or I'm not letting you use any more books."

Storm shrugged me off and said, "I'll create a small diversion, and hopefully they won't trace it back to me. I'll expect Inheritance to be ready when I get back."

Another talk with Murtaugh? He only did that when he was feeling particularly insecure or paranoid, which was a lot lately.

"I hate you," I told him.

'You tell me that every day, Catherine, yet you always come back."

Does anyone mind if I write the next post?

Nathaniel was done being stubborn. The man led him into a small room, where Nathaniel spotted Gwen, who looked weak and hurt.

"I'll let you two talk while we go icolate your friends."

Nathaniel felt bad about it, but the man's words reminded him of icolating the varibles in math.

The man left and Nathaniel immediatly turned to Gwen.

"I was hoping you wouldn't come," she said dryly. "You should get out of here while you can."

"There's not much I can do!" he pointed out. "I can't turn invisible, or anything."

"You could still try," Gwen offered.

"I came here to rescue you, and I'm not leaving without you. Or the nine others I brought along."

Gwen winced. "Nathaniel, are you crazy?!"

"Probably. You don't happen to know what they want me for. I mean, I can only turn invisible..."

"No idea, but probably something worse than this." It was then that Nathaniel noticed the large gash on the side of Gwen's face.

"Are you okay?!" he asked. "What did they do to you?!"

"It was to get me to back off," she said meekly. "It would have happened whether you came here or not. It's not your fault."

"No," said Nathaniel, feeling extremly guilty, "it is. I was the one who yelled about everything in the lunchroom. I was the one who thought you were a threat in the first place." Gwen opened her mouth to say something, but Nathaniel cut her off. "You can't convince me otherwise. It was just me, the paranoid little boy who can't jump. It was my fault."

Gwen raised an eyebrow. "Who can't jump?"

"Only an inch," sighed Nathaniel. "That's my biggest secret. See?" He jumped, but this time three inches.

"What?!" Nathaniel exclaimed in shock. He tried it again. Five inches. Eight inches. A foot.

"You're making me dizzy," Gwen complained.

"Sorry," Nathaniel paused midjump. "This is just really exciting for me and--"

Gwen cut him off. "Nathaniel, you're flying!" And indeed he was.

"But...but..." Nathaniel looked at the open window.

"HUNT set this up," he said, his eyes narrowing. "They're testing me. They know I can escape, they're wondering if I would. But I'm not going to. I have friends here. And," he said, remembering the hall of moaning children, "people I don't really know. And they all need to get out of here. What do you think, Gwen?" he asked, floating to the ground like a feather.

"I think you shouldn't call me that anymore," she winced. "There's no point. HUNT already knows--"

"I'm back, Nathaniel and Brooke. I'm sure you'll be glad to know," the man said in a singsong voice.

"Nathaniel? I believe we haven't been properly introduced. I'm Giovanni, the head of HUNT. Now, he said, rubbing his hands together, "it's time to get started."

At this point I see a way I could turn this into a parody of SUPER, the sequel to my favorite book POWERLESS, but again decide against it.

Wow! So glad this thread revived! Feeling awed, and slightly intimidated! Okay, here goes, tweaking open.

Brooke/Gwen;

Nathaniel was starting to make me dizzy. First, he had the audacity to come and try and rescue me, instead of being sensible. But I was glad he was here for one reason. He was right, there were other kids here, not just the ones from the rescue mission. They were still here, for now. But now, he discovered he could fly! Seriously. Just when you think you know a guy (okay, not really, but still).  Suddenly, the office door flew open, and the head of HUNT walked in. "I'm back!" he said, as if this were wonderful news, and not probably our death sentence. "Nathaniel, I don't think we've been properly introduced. I'm Giovanni, the head of HUNT." He smiled, and I started shaking again. I couldn't help it. He rubbed his hands together. "Now, it's time to get started," he said, as he sat behind the desk. He pulled out a large piece of paper, and spread it on the mahogany desk. Nathaniel and I kept our distance. I tried not to let him know how scared I was. I stood, with difficulty, and demanded; "Start what?" He grinned even wider. "Nathaniel, Miss Wendylin." I cringed at my name. I never told anyone my name. It was sort of like giving away my whole identity. Made me trackable. "You two are quite unique. Especially together. Nathaniel, you can fly, and turn invisible. Rather uncommon. Brooke, you can turn into animals, mythological creatures, things of brute power. Also uncommon. Together you two could be quite powerful. And if you want your friends to live, you'll do exactly as I say." He stared intently at both of us. I wanted to say; "The day bacon falls from the sky," but I knew he had a point. All of the kids here, friends or not, were depending on us. "I want you," he continued, "to go to every hero school in the county, and place one of these in each school's main electrical system." He placed a small glass vile on the table. Something lime green glowed inside. "This will disable all super powers for good. Do this, you keep your powers, and your friends live." Nathaniel and I look at each other. "By the way," Giovanni continued, lacing his fingers. "One in paticular will need your cooperation. Elexhiia, I believe her name is."

Okay, here is where I stop. @ Red, did you come up with Giovanni from Pokemon? Just wondering...

Sorry to stop here.

A large man came into the room and pulled me to my feet. I fell down. It wasn't purposely, but the man obviosly didn't know my condition because he started yelling at me. Eventually I think he figured out that I couldn't respond or stand up and he lifted me up instead. I was brought outside a door. I knew it was probably the leader wanting to watch my death. I heard my name from the other side of the door. The man pushed opened the door still carrying my like a baby and I managed to tilt my head enough to see the room. It was a large office with zero windows, a white desk, and two kids from school sitting on chairs. At the desk was a large man who gave me an evil smile. I winced.

"Welcome my dear Elexhiia. Have you enjoyed your stay?"

I didn't have the energy to say no or even shake my head. Suddenly I reconized one of the kids. The boy had been sitting next to me. I had played that prank on him! I cracked a smile. I didn't recognize the girl. Then it hit me... THE CAT! What were they doing here?

"This girl is slowly dying," the large man said, gesturing to me. "If you do as I say she will be released and she will survive. If not, well then..." he made a slicing motion across his neck. "Unfortunately..." he continued. "She is a risk to our society and will not receive her powers back, but no matter."

I gasped sharply. He can't do this. He's tricking them. I will die anyway. I tried to squeak out "no," but I was too weak.

Ha-ha! I love it!

Nathaniel was unease, nervous, shocked, panicked. Bring in Elexhiia, who was slowly dying and obviously weak just made it worse. He remebered she had pulled a prank on him (Does he remeber that?) . He wished that this whole ordeal was just some big, nastly, scary prank, and HUNT would just grin and say "Just kidding." Nathaniel glanced at Giovanni. He didn't seem likely to say "Just kidding" anythime soon.

They took Elexhiia away to whatever vile place they were keeping her, and Nathaniel involunterily shuddered as the door closed behind them. Was this the same fate his rescue squad had come upon?

"So, Brooke and Nathaniel, what do you say? Are you doing it, or not? You don't really acually have a choice, really." He's right, we don't, Nathaniel thought gloomily.

"So, we do what you say, and no one gets hurt?" aked Nathaniel.

"Something along the lines of that," Giovanni smiled cruely.

"But you said I could fly! I can't!"

"Oh Nathaniel," Giovanni sighed, "You really don't know anything. Isn't it obvious? When you were young, we here at HUNT put a restraint on you. You know what that menas, don't you? We knew of your powers before anyone else, and so we made it a half restraint, because invisble kids are very common, and flying ones are not. Once you came to HUNT on the rescue mission, the restraint would be lifted." Restraints? Those were things your parents tell you about when you're young, to make you do something. "Brush your teeth or we'll put a restraint on you. Walk the dog or we'll put a restraint on you." Nothing real, right...?

"And Nathaniel's not alone, Miss Wendlyn. We've done things to you that you can't even imagine." Gwen looked lost for words, scared, anxious, even angry. But she wasn't Gwen anymore... apparently she was Brooke. Nathaniel couldn't quite get used to it.

"So, you can start whenever you want! By that, I mean right now! Here's the list of all the schools," he handed Brooke, Gwen, whoever she was, a three page booklet, "and the crates of these bottles are over in that corner. Have fun!" With that, Giovanni left.

Okay, I think I need to explain what a restraint is better. It soty of keeps you from using your powers, and they're still there, but you can't use them or anything. It's a little difficult to explain, and I hope poeple understand.

It all went by in a blur. Which is funny given that time was in slow motion. One minute I was extremely weak, the next moment I was well...  strong. I knocked down the man carrying me, slowed down time, and took his energy. I acted on instinct alone, knowing that if I tried to understand what was happening I would lose the rush of power, strength, and energy. Sparks flew and an energy shield surrounded me, allowing me to walk quickly through the molasses like substance called time. As I walked forwards more sparks flew and I felt the kids around me growing stronger to the point of breaking out of their cells. I moved on as kids poured out behind me. I took every guard's energy and fed it carefully to the children of each level, freeing more and more until I had an army behind me waiting for command. Suddenly the reality of the situation hit me and I lost my grip on this new-found strength. The extra energy given to the kids was released and many of them who had been captured years ago collapsed. So many purple sparks of power and energy shot out of me that for a moment that was all I could see. My energy shield collapsed and so did my time control. I was left sprawled on the ground surrounded by dying children stripped of their powers. (I did not do that part; that was HUNT's fault). The only thing I saw before I blacked out was a group of children all my age whom I vaguely recognized running towards me. My only thought was: what the heck just happened?

Cappie says yayy.

(I think Storm is supposed to have tails. Let's just ignore that.)

Eight missing students is not a common occurance at Shane's fine Academy, so the school was about as calm as a pot of boiling water. By the time just after dinner, it seemed that escape would be impossible. Still, I had a plan. It had to be tonight.

I found Catherine before I left. "Gather up all the books you can fit in a backpack. We'e leaving. Go to my room and wait at the window."

I gathered up a few chioce items into my own backpack and changed into my "flight shirt"- the one with holes in the shoulder blades for wings to grow through. I left the uniform shirt on the floor and smiled at it. Goodbye, stupid Shane's.

I cracked open the window and climbed out to perch on the ledge, gargoyle fashion. I allowed one of my favorite pairs of black wings to grow and then took off. Night had already fallen, so I blended in with the dusky sky.

I landed precariously on a pole next to HUNT. All HUNT's power was electrical and it came from these lines. I placed my hand just above the line and created a flame. I leaped up quickly, not because I was afraid of the sparks (fire can't harm me at all), but because I hadn't much time.

I slipped in the back way and headed to the main holding cell, where I found three scared kids, one of whom looked like she (if you can it a she) was dying. An energy being. Figures. "You have very little time. Get out while you can," I snapped. I noticed several bulky crates and a brochure lying nearby. "What's that?" I asked.

Natheniel spoke up as he helped energy girl to her feet. "Those are bottles full of a liquid that stops superpowers."

I moved to the crates. "I know how to get rid of these. Now go!" The other girl shot me a grateful glance before she stumbled out the door, holding energy girl's arm.

I opened up a crate to find plastic bottles. Excellent, they weren't fragile. I managed to stuff every bottle into the pack before I grabbed the brochure. I pulled a pen out of my pocket and scribbled on it the note: "I guess I picked up my payment a little early. See you never again!" I tossed the note into a crate and closed it. Then I ran.

Catherine was waiting at the window. I breezed past her, and flew up to my air vent. I had an idea, and tonight was a double-crossing night. I can't tell you how many times I've been wanting to sabotage Shane's Academy. I resented every time Dr. Mods lectured me on how it was my duty to spy for them, and how I had to spy for them and get all their kids out of nasty situations because did I want to be the same kind of person as my father?

I cracked open the vent and reached into my backpack for a bottle. I flung it into the vent and flew to the window as I heard the sound of breaking plastic. I grabbed Catherine's arm and flew out the window. I let out a larger pair of wings to accomodate the extra weight and flew off into the night. I'm now on my own and it feels so great.
