New Roleplay Story

The one in the Mageguild is great, but... I found it too late to get into it without making it yet more confusing. Since that would really be something (more confusing? Wink), I hereby start a new one. Same rules, those seem to work well.

Thanna crouched in the alleyway, listening for any sign of her mysterious pursuers. Good; she must have lost them. No unusual noise disturbed the quiet early-morning streets of Gamelin, the island-city that was the center of the world, according to all the tales. And whether it was the center of the world or not, its streets were a goldmine for those who lived off their wits as Thanna did.

Standing up, she kept walking away from the marketplace where she'd picked up those strange pursuers, zigzagging and changing directions frequently in case they were still following her. They hadn't had any apparent reason to suddenly yell "After her!" and send her tearing through the streets, but the first rule she'd learned was that when you were being chased, you ran if you valued your life. The unpredictable (crazy, the whispers said) king of Gamelin sometimes became paranoid and ordered the arrest of random people or the seizure of a shipload of goods. And since he was the king, no one dared to disobey. But since the King's instability had manifested itself, his ministers had started struggling against each other, each trying to take power for themselves. So the streets of Gamelin were a lawless, dangerous place. But Thanna liked danger.

((I'd like to continue this scene, as it exposes Thanna's background, which I've got all worked out. Hope you don't mind if I make up some dialogue for your charries.))

"But - wait," said Masce. "What parents would--"

"They were tricked. A man came to their door. He cast a spell on her parents that made them willing to believe anything he told them. Then, he described how Thanna had snuck out of her room, climbed over the garden wall, and murdered the king in his bed. The whole thing was, of course, a lie."

"But who would do that?"

"My son." answered Geia calmly.

Estune picked her way through the marketplace, where Thanna was 'shopping'. Thanna was off toward the food stalls, and Estune would bet quite a bit that she didn't intend to actually buy anything. But she couldn't tell Thanna her mission until she had caught Thanna stealing something... Musing over this, Estune meandered over to the general area that Thanna disappeared toward. She didn't immediately see her, but after all, if you're stealing something, then you try not to stand out like a sore thumb. Thanna... The name seemed beg her to remember where she'd heard it last, and it must have been here in Gamelin. Thanna was, after all, too young to have come here on her own from elsewhere... And why do you think that, Estune? she asked herself. You weren't much older when you ran away... All the way to Ardan, too. Why couldn't she do the same? But it must have been here. She had no vivid memory of any Thanna, but she was fairly certain that her vague memories came from before Estune ran away...

Suddenly Thanna came running toward Estune, a look of terror on her face. "Run!" Estune waited just a moment to let Thanna get ahead of her, and followed. If she had had one more moment to think, she would have realized that running incriminated her, and was nearly the worst possible thing to do. But she did not get that moment, and began running. Luck, however, was thoroughly against them. They had not turned three corners in attempt to lose pursuit when they ran straight into the arms of another group of guards.

***

"Well, that was brilliant." Thanna was plainly disgusted. "It would have been better to keep going straight."

Estune said nothing. She had never been in prison before, although there had been some close calls, in all her seven years of arguing with lawkeepers. Now, when she hadn't done anything, she was caught. The irony was crushing. Now, all she could do was hope that they would be merciful. Or maybe there was another way. She turned to the door, and began studying it. She had proved fairly good at staying out of prison. Now it was time to see how she was at breaking out.

I'm beginning to see a pattern in Geia's last words. Suspenseful statements relating to male members of her immediate family. Intriguing.

Say, can I do a flashback? I understand that those things are thoroughly annoying, but I think it's got to be told from Ossr's point of view, so remember that this is not present time.

Ossr ran his hands through his hair. This whole stupid business was clouding his best judgment, but it simpy had to be done. He couldn't betray his brother, his best friend. He had to frame the wretched child.

Well, he reasoned, it was her father's fault, technically. But he felt so guilty. He was tearing this child's whole life away from her... she could marry a nobleman, have a small palace of her own, twelve lovely, dimpled young children, dine on rich foods and wear silken robes... she was a perfectly nice, clever little lass, he was sure; he'd seen her at state dinners and her behavior was pristine, her disposition charming. She couldn't be more than ten or eleven, either, such a pleasant little slip of a girl.

But, sighing heavily, he decided it must be done. Bruno, his brother, the boy he had played cops and robbers, and Indians and cowboys with, all those many long and sweaty summers ago, was a murderer, and a killer of his own father at that. A bloodthirsty, evil slaughter. But he was still Bruno. He was still Ossr's younger brothers. How many times had Mama made him promise to always watch out for Bruno, young Bruno, hapless Bruno, implusive Bruno? How many times had he made himself promise always to be watchful of his little brother? He may be a felonious, low-down, traitorous crook, but he was still Bruno.

Her father started it, he rationalized, trying to shake off his feelings of guilt. He was acting too hastily, he knew, and he also knew that as Crown Prince, it was his duty to check what the effects of this implusive action might be. But he didn't, wouldn't, couldn't let himself. He had to protect Bruno.

He had reached the manor by now. He composed himself, gathered his wits, talents, courage, and strength, and, summoning every bit of resolve, cast the Docile Fool Believers Spell.

Why? Thanna asked herself furiously, as she searched for a possible escape route. Just when it was important to not be caught - bang! here I am. And what will Masce say when he hears that I got caught by the stupid Iteru? I'll never live this down.

It took her a moment to realize that Estune was speaking.

"I hate to say it, but I don't see much of a way out," she said.

"Neither do I," Thanna answered. "Well, they'll have to give us a trial of some kind eventually. Maybe we can talk our way out then."

"We can try," said Estune.

"No you can't," said a tall, grand-looking man. "My name is D'nalgne. I am a rebel guard who pretends to work for the king, but has decided his random arrests are over. He keeps people in here forever." (Sorry this post is so short. I have some writer's block, but lots of ideas.)

This is insanely stupid. thought Masce Why do I have to save stupid Thanna.

Straight ahead, the guard was talking witth Thanna. Apparently there was another prisoner in the cell, one who helped Thana get caught. Summoning all his strenght, Masce stepped forward then jumped, and slammed his shoulder into the guard's soft abdomen. The scuffle that followed was short, and violent. when Masce emerged, carrying the cell's keys, he had a split lip and bruises everywhere. The guard lay unconsciess on the floor.

I'll write more later.

I said I was going to post more and here it is.

***********

As Masce fumbled with the keys he sensed Thanna gaping at him.

"What?" he said glaring at the girl.

"N-N-Nothing," she stammered, "except, why are you saving us?"

"Ask the King's mother," grumbled Masce, opening the cell door. "If it was up to me I'd let you both rot here."

Stepping out of the cell, Thanna looked toward the door. Masce looked back in the cell and saw somebody, resplendent in a cloak of shimmering colors, step from the shadows.

"Come on," said Thanna impatiently, outlined against the open door, "if we don't hurry, the guards'll throw us in jail again." Masce didn't trust the stranger but against his better judgment he led the prisoners back out into the bright sunlight.

((That's OK, we had some people drop out a while back, looks like, so you can pick up their charries, or just make up a new one. BTW, Phoenix, how do you pronounce "Masce"?))

Dashing through the dismal corridors after Masce, Thanna tried to figure out what was going on. Masce had not only rescued them, but he didn't laugh at her while doing it. And, what was this about the King's mother? But she didn't have time to think about it. They almost literally bumped into two guards.

"HYAAAAH!" Masce yelled as he tucked into one. Thanna jumped on the other, punching him as hard as she could while he stood dumbstruck. But even with the element of surprise they gained, it was a close battle. Estune ended up saving Masce's skin when he tripped and the guard was bearing down on him, and once Thanna nearly didn't dodge in time. But they managed, and ran on. Soon, they saw the gates, which were open through some incredible streak of luck. They dashed through them and were out once more in the streets.

((*poke poke*

Is there any possible way to revive this? It'd probably mean an entirely new set of characters... But it was one of my favorite RPGs! I know Mary Liz is still around... But I haven't seen any of the others, though that's not to say they aren't around.))

Take your pick, but at least give the person whose character you took over a chance to take it back. Smile
