I eat my Eggo waffle as fast as I can. I neeeeed to get to the TV before Jason, because clearly me recording the woman's cup playoffs is much more important than him recording some unimportant football game. I glance up to see him also racing, so I eat faster.  Yes! I finish just in time and run to the den, flick on the TV, and find my show. He groans and I smile angeliclly.

"Paige! Time for track!" my mom calls. Now I'm the one groaning.

"Can't I just record this one thing?"

"We have to leave NOW," she insists. "But Jason will do it for you. Won't you?" Jason heaves a tremendous sigh and I hop in the car.

After track, I find Katie and ask who her home room teacher is. Hers is Ms. Congo, which is disappointing, since mine isn't. But at least we might have some classes together. I slide into my seat, and our teacher, an old man, starts passing out protests for the Peridoc Table. I read the first question.

What element is copper?

A. Metal

B. Non-metal

C. (I forgot what C is)

D. Copper isn't an element

I circle A. Easy. Then I read the next question.

What is the abbreviation for gold?

A. Ca

B. Au

C. Go

D. Gd

C or D  would make the most sense, but I remember something about gold's abbrivation being weird. Sooo.....maybe B?

"Ladies, no passing notes. Pre-test or otherwise," the teacher says sternly. I glance over at Gigi and Kat, caught in the act with a note on the floor between them. I purposely drop my pencil, mumble an "oops," and pick it up--along with the note.  "Katie slammed a door in Brielle's face, and Katie shoved Rialla so she dropped her books." Katie wouldn't do something like that! There' s'more to this story,I know it. Maybe I can find out during brunch break.

P.S. Clyde says ptop. It's already at the top, silly Captcha!

I stick my lunch box back in my locker on the way to P.E. Willow is coming with me. I enter behind her and head to the locker rooms with my gym clothes. I change and grab a plastic water bottle that the teacher offers. She is a short woman with a strong build. She has thick, muscular legs and arms. She has brow hair with a tint of gray (Grey?) pulled back in a ponytail. I quickly pull my hair back and put it in a braid. The teacher, Mrs. Dargason looks at me. "Katie, we will be doing jumps for a few minutes, you can do pull-ups while you are waiting." I nod and head over to the pull-up bar while the others work on jumping stuff. I hear a groan after the few minutes passes and Mrs. Dargason announces we are doing push ups next. I take a drink of water and walk over to the group.

I do the push-ups well, not as well as Andy and Jason, but well enough. Mrs. Dargason takes us through a rigorous and tiring training.

My head is pulsing with ache when I emerge from...whatever that darkness was. The voices are gone. The room feels disturbingly vacant. Where am I?

I pry my eyes open. Oh. No. This can't be real.

I'm lying on a small cot, the back of my neck propped up by two pillows. A thick layer of blankets has been draped across my body. I'm wearing this hideous shirt-dress thing with blue and white pinstripes. And to top it all off, there isn't even a freaking doctor around here to tell me WHAT IS GOING ON.

"Help!" I croak, horrified at my own voice. It feels like I've swallowed a mouthful of sand. "Doctor! Nurse, even! Someone? Please?" It's been forever since I've said that pitiful word.

"Ms. Fawn." A man wearing a long white lab coat and a stethescope around his neck sweeps the surrounding curtain to the side and approaches me, clicking a pen and scribbling something onto his clipboard. "Your father is here to see you."

"Brielle, my poor little baby," Dad cries, appearing behind the doctor and racing towards me.

"Dad. Get off," I demand as he throws his arms around my neck and ruffles my hair. He backs away promptly, his hands up in surrender.

"Oh, I don't even care," he goes on, tears welling in his eyes. "You're okay, and that's all that matters."

"My head hurts."

"HER HEAD HURTS!" Dad screeches.

"Sir, if you could - " The doctor gestures towards a chair in the corner of the room. Dad reluctantly sits down.

"All right. Hello, my name is Dr. Foreman and I'm an emergency room specialist. We were informed that Brielle recieved cranial damage this morning at around 10:20; correct?"

"Cranial damage?" I repeat, nonplussed.

"A brain injury," Dr. Foreman clarifies. "In your case, a concussion. You passed out and were unconcious for nearly eight minutes. It's most likely nothing too serious, but most patients tend to wake up in seconds after fainting, so we decided to take a look."

I blink. "What?"

"Let's start small. Can you explain to me what you remember happening from around 10:15 to 10:30 am?"

"I was walking to my locker at school. I passed by the girls' room. Katie Tremmilo kicked the door open so it would hit my face. I fell. I woke up here," I deadpan.

"Uh...who exactly is Katie Tremmilo?" Dr. Foreman's forehead crinkles in perplexity.

"The girl who attacked me, duh. She's out to get me and my friends." I plaster an innocent, sad smile on my face. "But between you and me," I whisper, "I think she has know. Anger issues?"

"I see. And you think she deliberately tried to hurt you?"

"I'm positive," I confirm. "One-hundred percent."

"Thank you, Brielle. I'll deliver this paperwork to the office and send a nurse to check up on you in a little bit." Dr. Foreman rises from his stool and exits the room.

"I'm so sorry, Princess," Dad apologizes profusely as soon as he's gone. "The school board will be hearing of this. I'll see to it that what's-her-face gets expelled."

I gaze at him with puppy dog eyes. "And...and you'll buy me that Forever 21 dress I wanted? From the...m-mall?" I fake-sniffle.

"Of course, sweetheart."

"And, and, and the matching stilettos?" I continue to snivel.

"Sure, honey."

"And I'll probably need to get my hair done, too. At the professional salon, not the cheap kids' one. Plus a manicure to go with it - no, make that a mani-pedi. Okay?" I eye him expectantly.

"Um, well, I don't - "

"Daddyyy," I whine, pretending to choke down a sob.

"Fine!" he gives in. "Anything to make you feel better, darling."

"Good." Just what the doctor ordered.

Paige comes up to me. "Did you hear what everyone is saying about Katie?" She asks. "No... why?" I answer, concerned. "Well they're saying that she slammed a door in Brielle's face and that she knocked Rianna's books out of her hands on purpose." I am shocked, then angry. "That couldn't have actually happened! There has to have been a mistake. Katie would never do anything like that." I'm so angry at whoever spread those lies. My face starts blushing. I march over to Kat, whose standing right there. She's pretty nice, but she does hang out with Brielle and Rianna. "Where's Brielle?" I demand. Kat looks startled. "Um, she's in the nurses office... why?" I pale. No way could Katie have done that! She's too nice... right?

Wait, Paige, are you the former Erin that's in the artsy girl group?

Cappy the captcha says knex. You'll have to wait and see what happens next!

I'm going to organise the smart girls:

Emma (Booksy): shy, quiet, bookworm, gets teased a lot, nice, old fashioned. Shyest one in the group.

Mellie: fun, funny, makes up nicknames for everyone, cheers people up, not afraid to stand up for herself and her friends. Kind of the leader of the group.

Viola:  independent, stubborn, slightly dark.

The popular girls call these girls the "nerd group". They are opposites, and so they often get into conflict. Is this OK with you guys?

Art is wonderful. The teacher, Mr. Clays, tells us we'll be doing pottery for the next term. We are going to paint all kinds of pottery, and he hinted that we'll probably be going on a few field trips to maybe even make our own! I have to hold myself in really well when he tells us so.

The bell rings, and everyone gets up. I run over to my locker, trying be beat the flood of kids that are heading to lunch- just my luck that my locker had to be in the same corridor. I grab my lunch and drawing kit and shove my way through the crowds to enter the art room.

Willow is already there, unpacking her lunch. I sit down at a seprate table and start eating my lunch- a ham sandwich- while drawing.

Mr. Clays leaves, and Willow looks up. "It's been the talk of the school that Katie attacked Brielle and Rianna."
"What?!" I nearly choke on my sandwich. "I don't think Katie's like that. Either of them."
"Me neither! But I overheard someone saying that she wacked Ria with a door and pushed Bri so all her books fell!"
"Definitely not her. But if she really did it, I'm quite proud. They had it coming." I carefully start sketching out Katie's figures. Then I draw a backround for the bathroom. After a few minutes, it's done. "What do you think of my latest masterpeice?"
It shows Katie glancing the other way (towards the bathroom) and pushing the door open. A comical Rianna is getting wacked in the face by it.

Willow chuckles, then stops herself. "Better not let anyone see that."
"I won't." I tuck it into my sketchbook.

All of this chaos with Rianna, Katie, and Brielle is driving me crazy. I know that Katie wouldn't do anything like that on purpose, so there must be something behind it besides what's going around. But I'm not sure.

This is unacceptable. I see Brielle being liftedinto the wheelchair.

I lean over to the nearest person-- Sara's-- ear. "Katie's a psycho."

Rachel Flay, from the unpopular girly girl group (or dorks, as the popular girly girls so maturely call them), walks over to the table I sit at with Mellie and Booksy. "Speak," I say without looking up from my Cup O' Noodles.

"Katie's a psycho!" she tells us.

"Katie?" Booksy cries incredulously. "No, Katie is nice!"

"What qualifies you to make that assumption?" I ask Rachel. She looks at me sideways.

"She means, who told you you coud say that?" Mellie pipes in.

"I heard it from Lisa, who heard it from Sally, who heard it from Lucy, who heard it from Casey, who heard it from Gigi, who heard it from Sara, who heard it from Rianna!" Rachel clarifies triumphantly.

"I refuse to pass on this ridiculous rumor," I say, turning back to my lunch.

"I refuse to pass on this ridiculous rumor. End of conversation. Goodbye."

Rachel makes a "Hmph!" sound and walks away. Poor Katie. Rumors travel fast in this school. Even if we refuse, Rachel is not going back. She's going to find someone who hasn't heard it yet, and most likely THEY will pass it on. There will be murmurs about it in the halls by tomorrow.

I feel sick. Everyone stares at me as I walk down the hall, clutching my books to my chest. I hang my head so my bangs cover my eyes instead of resting on my glasses. Suddenly a hand grabs my arm and pulls me to the side. I look up to find myself amidst my friends. "Katie! What happened? Are you all right?" I nod while Paige, Erin, and Willow hug me all at once. "

"How about a sleepove at gramps this Friday? I'll explain then."

They seem to like this idea and nod. "We'd better get to our classes then," Paige says.

Willow, Paige, and I depart for art. (Does Erin too?) We enter the clas room and take our seats.

I can see Paige almost exploding with joy when the teacher announces the ceramics we will do. I would rejoice, but I'm really not in the mood. I feel the teacher's eyes fall on me as I hang my head. They quickly move though and he continues speaking,

I listen to my teacher explain when people first started woodworking. It's quite interesting in fact, but from the looks on the other students faces they just want to start.

I know exactly what Vi's thinking.

"We gotta help Katie. This is NOT going to go well!" I declare. "Now, any ideas?"

"W-we can't do anything! The Bee and Rhino will send rumours after us!" Booksy replies.

"You afraid of those starbucks loving worms. Now, ideas?" I turn to Vi.

"OK. I can't watch Katie suffer. I'm in it if you are." I surrender.

"First off, we've got to get to know Katie some more," I interrupt.

"All I care about is graduating from college at least magna cum laude. They can't take THAT away. Now, girls like them-- their MOST important ideal is a tie between perfect appearance and reputation."

Mellie and Booksy nod. "Go on," Mellie prompts.

"So if we take those away, they'll be mortified. But we cannot let it get traced back to us. Also, Starbucks is a nice place. It has coffee, pastries and internet connection. Now let's get plotting."

I run into the hospital during lunch break.

"OMG, Brielle! Are you, like, OK?" I ask.

"Ohh..." she moans. "My head hurts!"

"That Katie, she's, like, a psycho! And that hospital gown..."

"I know! It's a fashion CRIME. You have to get back at Katie!"

"There are, like, rumors going around, which I, like, started."

"What do the rumors say?"

"Only the truth. That Katie's, like, a psycho. ALL the kids will, like, hate her now."

"Well, lunch break is, like almost over. I have to, like get to class. Oh. Also, my dad's a, like, lawyer. We'll pull some strings."

After lunch, I make my way back to my locker, holding my sketchbook. I'm not looking where I'm going as I shade in a fox, and I slam right into someone. I drop my sketchbook and papers fly everywhere.

"Sorry- sorry-" I gasp, paling as I realize who it is.

Rianna looms over me. "I've been bumped into twice in one day! That's it!"

I realize I'm lying down and she's standing up. I also realize most of the school has come to watch.

"It was an accident," I whisper. Her foot comes down and I roll out of the way. "Come on. Please stop."
The audience is waiting with bated breath as I stand up. She raises her fist, and then something catches Rianna's eye.

A drawing.

Oh. No.

She picks it up. "Is Brielle getting a concussion funny to you?"
I stay silent, my face flaming up.

"Is it?"
She had it coming to her, I want to say. She deserves it, and so do you. Now back off and leave me alone!

But I don't say anything. I stand there, paralyzed....

Gigi and I walk out of Science together. Gigi is complaining to me about not having a good alarm clock when a girl from the Girly Girl Unpopular group comes up to us. I remember her- I was friends with her a few years ago, back in elementary school. She tries to stay friends with me, ish, now that I'm in the Squad. "Hey, Kat." I reply, "Hey . . . Kari, right?" She nods. "Have ya heard?" I shake my head. "Brielle had to go to the HOSPITAL," she whispers, making her gray-green eyes go wide. "She has a CONCUSION from being hit by that door." Gigi cuts in: "Seriously?! Like, OMG!!" I gape at Kari. "You're kidding." She shakes her head, smiling slightly. "No, it's true. I saw it, myself. With my own two eyes." I pause. We've reached my locker. I twirl the lock and open it up, dumping my stuff inside. Gigi and Kari pause too. "So does this mean you'll be willing to hang out with me on Friday?" she asks, hopefully. I shrug. "Maybe." Kari's a nice kid, and we were good friends two years ago. Why not catch up on old times? But Gigi is looking at me unhappily, so I shoo her off saying something about needing to go. She races off. Gigi frowns slightly, so I quickly draw her attention back to the gossip. "I can't BELIEVE Katie would do that! Katie's annoying and all, but . . . " Gigi shakes her head. "Some of the other girls are quite capable of mean things. Like, some of the Nerdettes (the Squad's name for the smart girls) call Brielle Bee, and then they call Riana Rhino. It's so stupid!" We've reached her locker now. I wait as she puts her things away. "So, what do you want to do now?" I ask.
