Okay, let's start!
Note to everyone: Chinese last names are ALWAYS pronounced wrong, but nobody corrects them! The last name "Wang" is pronounced "Wong", not "Wayng". If you ask most Chinese kids, THEY'LL SAY THAT IT IS THE ENGLISH PRONUNCIATION!! Which is not true!!
~Emma~
"Evan Wang." My homeroom teacher, Mr. Albright, pronounces Evan's last name as "Wayng" when taking attendance.
"It's pronounced WONG," I whisper. No one hears me."
"Here," calls Evan.
"Emma Zhang." Mr. Albright pronounces it as "Zayng."
"No." I stand up.
"What are you doing?" Someone whispers. I ignore them.
"It's not pronounced that way. It is pronounced like Jong."
"But…" The teacher looks confused. "There's an there, not an O. And there's a Z-H there, not a J."
"That's how it's pronounced in Chinese," I insist stubbornly."
"Then what about Evan Wang?"
"You pronounced that wrong, too, he just didn't correct you."
"Emma, it's fine. It's the English--"
I cut him off. "There is only one pronunciation. Hey, what's your Chinese name?"
"Wang Lu-long. But…"
I interrupt again. "When your parents are calling to you, do they say WAYNG Lu-long?"
"No, but--"
I am obviously very picky about pronunciation. "So that's the right pronunciation! Your last name is pronounced WONG, and everyone says it wrong."

Sorry, guys! I meant to post yesterday, but the CB was acting up and wouldn't let me.

Caroline~

Wow.

Just wow.

Both of them are idiots.

I'm quite blunt in my mind. Judging. Rude. So, here I am, being judging and rude.

One, Emma's making a scene. So the teacher pronounces her name wrong. SO? I am a person who learns half of my words from books and mispronounces half of those. People correct me, I get it wrong a few more times, then I grow into it. She can't expect every last person to know Chinese. Hey, I can't pronounce anything Chinese right. I say Ng like what it's spelled instead of Ing (or I used to, until my dad corrected me).

But the teacher's also being an idiot. "But there's a zh there, not a j." Who do you think knows better, the girl who knows Chinese or you?

Duh.

And my annoyance, like always, slowly grows into a slight fury, so my teeth are clenched as I sit in class. Why did Emma stand up? She could at least protest sitting down. You don't need to lead a full-scale riot because someone mispronounces a really hard name.

My name? My name is easy. And I actually kind of envy people who have their names mispronounced. I've always wanted to correct a teacher on the pronounciation of my name, but I wouldn't go about it by standing up and pretty much telling off the teacher in front of the whole class.

I don't usually voice my thoughts out loud.

But, says a logical voice at the back of my head. I hate logical voices. If you weren't as rule-abiding as you are, wouldn't you love to stand up and scold a teacher on their use of the Oxford comma?

I would like it, I tell the voice. But I wouldn't stand up and humiliate the teacher in front of the class. I'd just correct it on my worksheet.

What if everyone called you Caroline Praystoon? says the voice. Wouldn't you be ticked off?
That's different. Nobody calls me Praystoon because the pronounciation is obvious. Other languages are not obvious. Remember when I tried learning Irish out of a book, and I gave up after the first page?

There. I've won.

"Caroline Preston?" says the teacher. He's calling attendance out of order again. I don't really care.

"Here."

See?

He said Preh-ston, not Praystoon.

___

I'm kind of a jerk in my head. I'm sorry. I was actually being very honest with myself here.

But when I verbalize, I'm a nice kid. Thoughts just stay private, as everyone's do.
