Midnight City

Midnight City

This is a fantasy novel I'm writing, the first story I've ever posted on the CB, so help and constructive feedback would be appreciated. I hope you enjoy the story!

Prologue:

Racing through shadows she ran, slipping and sliding in the icy sleet which was spread along the footpath like paint. The evershining moonlight illuminated the path in front of her with each step she took. Tears slipped down the girls pale cheeks, running over her chapped lips. She wiped them away with her free hand, while closely sheltering the most precious item in all of Midnight City from the downpour in the other. The faint, ghostly forest around her seemed to swallow her up, blurring around her faster and faster like a whirlwind.

She paused to peer over her shoulder, only to see blurred figures holding lanterns coming closer and closer towards her. The howles and barks of bloodhounds hunting her spurred the girl on as she turned around and sprinted towards her destination.  She could see the dark cave ahead of her through the billowing mist. She clambered inside, a tight squeeze that only a child could fit inside. Her head emerged inside the dim circular cavern and she skidded to a halt. Lightning her lantern with a match, the cave was suddenly illuminated and the girl could see spooky bats hung upside down and cool water dripping down from stalagmites and stalactites. She took a deep breath and headed further into the winding passages, detirmened to finish her quest. She could her her heart thudding in her chest as she unwrapped the tiny paper package that was so important to her. Her hands shook as she hid it inside the deepest darkest crevice she could possibly manage. Atlast, satasfise, she turned on her heel in the oposite dirrection, the maps in her memory telling her feet where to go. Finally, she saw the light of a campfire ahead of her, and a rasping voice echoicng through the endless passage ways.

"My child. You've come."
