The Sea's Song

The Sea's Song

September’s (very late) CBversary RP!!

~~~
Cambria is a flourishing port city, full of life, laughter, and magic. For a city built from the ashes of a war only months ago, it is remarkable how much it’s grown and developed. And it’s also remarkable how quickly it’s grown, though no one questions the magic.
Your characters were children when the city rose. And they are barely grown when the city falls.
An inescapable darkness has risen. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, an idea unheeded by the founders of Cambria. Too much magic calls forth too much darkness. But what’s done is done, and their only hope now is to journey beyond the land across the perilous sea, in an attempt to save the people they have doomed.
The journey is not for the faint of heart.
The Lottery is the last thing they give you, a system enchanted to find the bravest, the strongest, the smartest, only the best to sail across the Deep and find salvation.
~~~~~

Rules and Information that you will NEED to know (PLEASE READ THEM ALL):

  • There are 14 spots. Reservations are accepted, but you MUST post your charrie within a week of you reserving that spot or I’ll give it to someone else
  • This will start after I have at least 7 characters
  • I’d love a cast of both males and females, which brings up an important point
  • CHARACTERS!!!! I would love if we had a ton of diversity, so I’m accepting literally anything, especially POC (People of Color) and LGBTQ+ (@ADMINS, sorry, just wanted to make sure you saw this if you’re not allowing this, please delete the part where it says LGBTQ+, so no one gets confused, thanks!!) NOTE: I will be looking over your characters and okaying them.
  • The time period is a fantasy-medival, think Throne of Glass, Six of Crows, A Darker Shade of Magic, or if you have no idea what I’m talking about, just think of Pirates of the Caribbean or something in terms of clothing and technology
  • NO OP CHARACTERS PLEASE, THANK YOU!
  • Password: marshmallow fluff
  • A note on magic: If you choose to give your characters magic, it does not mean that they can summon winds, control the ocean, or anything big like that. The magic in this world comes from a sort of stronghold thingy, so it can be mined, but not everyone is compatible with the magic, meaning that it is very picky and may possibly reject your character
  • I might be a tad bit harsh on your character, but remember, it’ll help with your character building!
  • Aaaaand I think that’s it, I hope you read it, and without further ado. . .

Nope, just make them absolutely normal (by the way, if you don't mind, could you make your character able to wield magic? I have a ton of non-magic wielders, thanks) I'd like your characters to be as real as possible, flaws, disorders, and all. I'll post a bit more about the Lottery later.

Noo, I'm too late.

Actually, if you can make a magic-wielding male character, I'll let you in. I let Owlgirl in, but then we had an uneven number, so if you join, we'll have 16 characters.

Some more additional notes on the actual RP:

First off, you guys are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! We have so much diversity and well developed characters! Props to y’all!

On activity: I really, really want this to be one of those RPs that finishes. I’d like everyone to post at least once every week (if it’s too much, please let me know!) If you ever feel the need to drop out, that’s perfectly fine— let me know, and rest assured that they’ll be well taken care of. Which brings me to the point of inactivity. If you don’t post for a month (is that fair?) I’ll consider you inactive, and I will write your character in, but it’ll be like they’re in a solo write. You will be able to reclaim your character if you come back though. Tell me if this sounds fair!

On the actual post: Please, please, please try to commit to at least a two paragraph post, again, please tell me if this is too much for you.

On the plotline: The fun stuff! These are just some general details on where in the story we’ll be starting. I’d like to start with each of your characters having a flashback to a livelier, happier Cambria. It doesn’t have to be long or anything, and it can cover anything, from backstory to just scenery, or maybe a scene at the ports or meeting the head mages on a field trip for your character’s magic class. . . just throwing ideas out here, not suggesting anything. . . no. . . not at all. . .  Anyways, where the RP really starts is at the Autumnal Equinox festival. It’s a really big deal, and usually an annual event, but this year, it’s an even bigger deal because of the Lottery (anyone have a better name for this? Lottery makes it sound like people were picked randomly.) Anyhow, let your character enjoy the festival before the Lottery (we really need a new name for this) I’ll have more info on the festival itself (and maybe an illustration!) When the Lottery (argh, the nameeeee) happens, I’ll post a list of the order in which y’alls characters are called to prevent confusion. WE ARE STARTING FRIDAY. We’re still waiting on a couple of characters and Dumpun’s on a camping trip, so I don’t want us to get too far ahead without her.

Also, for everyone, in case you miss this post, or missed one of my other @Y’ALL IMPORTANT posts, I’ll make a list of the pages that they’re on.

And finally, again, please post your NaNo usernames if you’d like to help with world building!

I don't have a NaNo but world-building is My Big Thing as I'm sure you've seen already - I'd love to help in any case!! (Frankly I don't know why I don't have one by now...that might change...)

Koda says ikdk. Apparently she doesn't know why I don't have NaNo yet either.

Ookay, that's cool: anyways, what I have right now is Cambria— surrounding it is an unnamed forest where the remaining fae live, mountains guarded by a currently undetermined magical creature, and the remaining land is barren after the war. Any ideas for anything else?

Unnamed as in we need a name for it, or unnamed as in the people don't have a name for it, it's simply "the forest" in common parlance?

Cambria is a port city, and port cities thrive on trade; therefore there must be some other cities scattered on rivers and the seacoast across the land, for Cambria to trade with. We could make up names and approximate locations for some of the cities, how they were affected by the war, their diplomatic relations with Cambria, etc.

Also, wasteland can mean many different things. The Great Snake Desert was always wasteland, from a Cambrian point of view, but the plains to the east of the mountains have likely been decimated by the fighting, especially if battle mages were involved. During and immediately after the war, the forest was in rough shape too, but the fae look after their own. There are tales of blood and ash turned instantly to fallen leaves, of enormous oak trees growing in a day that look as though they've been there for hundreds of years. Likewise, the far northern tundra was the site of at least one long and bitter siege, but has remained mostly unaffected - the cold is too brutal for most humans to sustain for long. It could be called wasteland as well.

For the mountains, I'm thinking griffins or some variety of dragon might be our best bet. Something that can fly, certainly.

No one knows much about the lands across the sea. Ships turn up in the port cities once or twice a year claiming to be from Sanneora or Grand Faltree or some such place, but no one can ascertain the veracity of such statements, given the wondrous things that come from this continent alone. There are legends, though, of a civilization of people who live their entire lives on boats and use the raw magic of the sea in lieu of blurstones, of a city built on a floating island that wanders the Deep. These are the legends that the people of Cambria so hope can save them, because if even a fraction of them are true, it will be better than simply waiting here for the Dark to destroy everything.

Paradoxically, the centers of magic - the monasteries and academies dedicated to the subject in cities around the continent - are the last holdouts to be completely untouched by the darkness. Even places where no magic has been seen in decades can feel it a little: rural farmers' crops grow just a little bit worse, sages in the mountains glimpse more shadow in their meditations. The fae grow restless as their forest is struck, little by little, with blight; they steal people and replace them with changelings more often now, they are more likely to walk the streets of Cambria in human guise and try to trick someone into making a bad deal.

The people of the Great Snake Desert, the Dust People and the Badawiin, have kept to themselves through all this, as they always have and likely always will. Even they have felt the Darkness, though. Their wise women speak always of the Balance, the Price, coming up in their auguries. A few of their most reliable watering holes have dried up. They wonder what has become of their children who have gone to seek their fortunes far away.

There have been rumors, from the poorest slums of Cambria where magic is plentiful but the protective influence of the monastery does not often turn, of the Shadow taking physical shape, in the form of some crawling, slavering abomination made of nothing but tarry darkness. Most people go about their days ignoring these rumors completely. To acknowledge them would be to admit that something so horrible as they describe could really exist, which is a scarier prospect than many can handle.

Okay, huge Cambrian-current-events dump over. I'll quit rambling now. Use any or none of these ideas as you see fit.

Unamed as in I don't have a name for it yet. Anyhow, yeah, there'll be cities across the coastline (but only the coastline) that Cambria trades with. I'll think up a couple of names. I'm loving your world-building right now— for the mountains, I decided on wyverns. Also, I've been working on an index of magical creatures in Cambria, and sorry to say, the fae are mostly extinct after the war. Also, I like your idea about monastaries and academies of magic being untouched, but how about only those who have trained can access them (basically no one), otherwise everyone could just hole out in those places. I'll be posting a huge info-dump in a little about culture, magical creatures, and history.

...I see that you deleted the other sentence of my first post, Admin. Why? I was stating an opinion.

I can't remember specifically to what sentence you refer, but it was likely mentioning something inappropriate for the youngest people on Chatterbox.
