The Sea's Song

The Sea's Song

September’s (very late) CBversary RP!!

~~~
Cambria is a flourishing port city, full of life, laughter, and magic. For a city built from the ashes of a war only months ago, it is remarkable how much it’s grown and developed. And it’s also remarkable how quickly it’s grown, though no one questions the magic.
Your characters were children when the city rose. And they are barely grown when the city falls.
An inescapable darkness has risen. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction, an idea unheeded by the founders of Cambria. Too much magic calls forth too much darkness. But what’s done is done, and their only hope now is to journey beyond the land across the perilous sea, in an attempt to save the people they have doomed.
The journey is not for the faint of heart.
The Lottery is the last thing they give you, a system enchanted to find the bravest, the strongest, the smartest, only the best to sail across the Deep and find salvation.
Rules and Information that you will NEED to know (PLEASE READ THEM ALL):
  • There are 14 spots. Reservations are accepted, but you MUST post your charrie within a week of you reserving that spot or I’ll give it to someone else
  • This will start after I have at least 7 characters
  • I’d love a cast of both males and females, which brings up an important point
  • CHARACTERS!!!! I would love if we had a ton of diversity, so I’m accepting literally anything, especially POC (People of Color) and LGBTQ+ (@ADMINS, sorry, just wanted to make sure you saw this if you’re not allowing this, please delete the part where it says LGBTQ+, so no one gets confused, thanks!!) NOTE: I will be looking over your characters and okaying them.
  • The time period is a fantasy-medival, think Throne of Glass, Six of Crows, A Darker Shade of Magic, or if you have no idea what I’m talking about, just think of Pirates of the Caribbean or something in terms of clothing and technology
  • NO OP CHARACTERS PLEASE, THANK YOU!
  • Password: marshmallow fluff
  • A note on magic: If you choose to give your characters magic, it does not mean that they can summon winds, control the ocean, or anything big like that. The magic in this world comes from a sort of stronghold thingy, so it can be mined, but not everyone is compatible with the magic, meaning that it is very picky and may possibly reject your character
  • I might be a tad bit harsh on your character, but remember, it’ll help with your character building!
  • Aaaaand I think that’s it, I hope you read it, and without further ado. . .
Posting my charrie later today. I was wondering, was it on purpose that Cambria was named after a typeface, and could other cities be named after interesting-sounding typefaces, too, like Bodoni or Avenir?
Without taking the time to do any research, just off the top of my head, I would not be surprised if typefaces themselves were named after various places and/or the person who first used them. Cambria sounds like a great place for a vacation. How about a character named Garimond Bold or Palatino Italic? (That sounds like a horse to me!) Fun!
Actually, yes! I was originally going to name it Eskan, but then I thought that it was the name of the place in Princess Academy (it actually wasn't) so I was scrolling through random fonts in Google Docs and just thought that Cambria would make a good name for a port city:) The typeface ideas for other cities sounds good too!
Also, Admins, Palatino Italic does sound like a horse name!
Heigh-o, Silver!
Those are cool character names Admin!
Also, Cambria is the name of a town in California. I've been there.
I don't have much time today, so I'm just writing this in third-person past tense, but for later, which POV and tense are we writing in?
Since the flashback is supposed to be nostalgic, I don’t think ten years is long enough ago for Hastiin. Can you make an exception for me and let me do one for before his mother died? If not, I’ll rewrite it.
~Hastiin~
Hastiin hated the Autumnal Equinox Festival.
He’s always hated it, ever since he was seven, but more so this year. Even as the city was dying, they wasted time, energy, and money on stupid festivities.
Cambria wasn’t always like this. As he walked by yet another candied fruit seller, he remembered a rather random memory: Walking down the streets with his mother. He had been six years old, and they had been poor. He’d asked, “Mama, can we buy some candy?”
“No, my child, we don’t have money. We need to buy food for the table.”
“Candy is food!” The city was an active, bustling place. People rushed by them as they walked slowly, hand in hand. Vendors and merchants called out to each other, and children played in the streets.
She laughed. “Very expensive food. I’m sorry. Maybe if you get a scholarship into the fighting school and become a warrior. Then you’ll have money, and you’ll be able to give your wife and child candy.”
“Okay,” he responded. “I’m very big, I’m six! Why can’t I start training now?”
Mama only smiled.
At least he had kept his promise to his mother.
Although many people knew him, Hastiin felt awkward at the festival. The decorations were bright, there were people everywhere, and some group was playing music.
“Well, hello, Hastiin!” one of his schoolmates from the fighting academy greeted him.
“Um, hi,” he mumbled, turning away quickly.
“Oh, it’s Begay!” When he was fifteen, he had been a bodyguard for Alessia, one of the founders of Cambria. Alessia’s daughter had still remembered him for that. “Recognize me?”
“Yep.”
He wandered around some more, was seen by more people, and generally had a bad time until the Lottery (?) finally started.
Would he be picked?
And, more importantly, did he want to go?
Here's the rest of my sheet, finally. Sorry if she's too stereotypical.
Weight: I'm not sure... whatever weight would make her sort of stocky but not overweight?
Appearance: Chin-length, straight, fine, darkish blonde hair, greyish green eyes, snub nose, normal sized lips (not full or thin) light pink lips, freckles pretty much all over her face, doesn't wear makeup, light skin, but darker than usual for a Caucasian person-- she's part... not white, I'm not really sure what.
Default expression: a face so straight and dead that it scares people.
Personality: Presents herself as sunny, cheerful, and frolicksome. Takes an optimistic view of the present, but not the future. Doesn't believe in making plans because they probably won't work. Enjoys physical challenges.
I'll continue later. I have everything written in a notebook, so I'm ready. I'll post the rest first thing tomorrow because I'm going to watch fireworks tonignt.  Ugh I'm sorry to keep delaying you.
As you can probably tell, I've spent a lot of time on developing Cambria, so I was thinking of using it for my NaNo project. I'd just like to know if all of you are okay with me using some of the names for places/magic theories that you came up with for this RP. If you'd rather me not, I totally understand!
Thanks,
September
