Urban Fantasy RP!

Urban Fantasy RP! (for the CB reunion!)

It's Valentine's Day, 2019. Everything is normal- there's a new magical animal reserve being built, the nation of dragons is getting along well with the humans, the sirens and harpies are fighting in the streets again (three sailors have died in the past week, and humans are advised not to stay out after dark.) There's a fairy exchange student coming to town, confusing that one kid who still mixes up pixies- a type of insect- with fairies.

It's not perfect, but life is going on like normal. That is until the sea starts to churn...

Fun Fact about CBer:

Name: Celeano Namera

Species: Harpy (this is more the name of a gang. Sirens, Harpies, and Winged -not in one of the two groups- are all a type of human who is part bird.)

Age: 16

Pronouns: He-him-his

Personality: Careless, takes things too lightly. Enjoys hanging out with friends, joking around, and, um, traditional harpy stuff. Misses his sister.

Appearance: A multiracial boy with tan skin, blue eyes, crazy-curly red hair left loose, and russet wings. Usually wears a Fortnite shirt, ripped up jeans, and the traditional harpy face markings.

Backstory: Got pressured by his mom to join the Harpies (versus the Sirens) His wings grew in at a younger age than usual, so he didn't really have a choice- but he pretends he did. He grew in the ranks of the Harpies until he became the leader, and still is now.

CBer Name: Blue Moon

Fun Fact about CBer: I'm in the Deltarune fandom!

Name: Eris Namara

Personality: A lot more intense than her brother, but still enjoys fun. Loves the feeling of swimming and has a way with words.

Appearance: A multiracial girl with dark brown skin, blue eyes, wavy dark hair (straightened) and light gray wings. Usually wears a tank top, rolled up jeans, and glittering scale earrings.

Backstory: Celanoe's sister. Got her wings at the usual age (ten) when the Harpies and Sirens were at peace. Became a Siren against her mom's wishes because she loved to swim, but ended up at war with her brother.

Name: Ailie Eorossong

Species: Elven

Age: 80(16 in elvish years)

Pronouns: She/her

Personality: Ailie is quiet and shy towards strangers and in the world of humans, but assertive and confident among the elves. She is extremely gifted, but her emotions sometimes excite her talents and she has a hard time keeping them in check. That is one of the reasons why she has gotten even more reclusive.

Appearance: She is tall, about 6 feet, and has long jet black hair. She has a blue tear drop shaped birthmark on her left hand, pointy ears, and pale skin. Normally she wears jeans and a black T-shirt, trying not to draw attention to herself.

Backstory: Ailie is the daughter of one of the four main council members of the Elven Realm. The elves are elemental and the. four members each represent a different element clan: earth, air, water, and fire. The clans are semi nomadic and the council meets to govern only a few times a year. (N.B. Does this work Blue Moon with your world building? The clans stay within a highly defined Elven realm and are wary of outside tech and strangers.) Ailie was the daughter of the Sky clan lord, yet it was soon discovered that she had elemental water powers. Outcast from her clan, she began crossing the border into the humanish world and made friends with a Winged boy, Marcus. When she was twelve, her secret was discovered as Marcus betrayed her to his Winged gang, starting a diplomatic incident with the elves. The upshot was that Ailie was banished into the humanish world for 30 years. She now lives with a human family, trying not to stand out at school and avoiding any Winged like the plague. She tries to hide her Elven identity hoping that by successfully completing her sentence, she will be allowed to come home.

Codesmith- your worldbuilding works! I didn't have much for the elves, so that's fine.

Soren- Like RW said, Winged only have feathered wings as I'm thinking of them as sort of human/bird hybrids. That cool?

Reserving! Blue Moon, could you explain the Winged gangs a bit more?

The two Winged gangs are composed of people who have feathery wings. They are the Sirens and the Harpies. That's as much as I know.

Did someone say... WORLDBUILDING? Never fear, I will give you that information!

Long ago, there were two subsets of Winged- the East and the West. Much like the real 'East and West' regions of the world, the actual cardinal directions didn't have much say. The Winged from the West most often lived in Europe and were known as Harpies. Winged do not have strong senses of honor, so they did not join many battles in Europe's constant warring with itself. They figured out ways to survive, using the battles as an assist. I will not go into detail on what they did.

The Winged in the East most often lived in the Mediterranean regions, where their lives were a lot more cushy. They had more choice in where they lived and picked deserted islands, fishing for food and slowly forming their own culture. One day, a skilled pearl diver found a shipwreck. Just that wreck added so much to their culture. The mechanics reverse-engineeered the parts, which added to their tech. A non-mining culture, they could now have a strict form of currency. The next step was obvious- namely, make more shipwrecks.

But how did those two antiquated groups form into such a mismash of gangs? While West and East- Harpies and Sirens- were the same species, it would have been odd to have two siblings be in different groups, and there wasn't much infighting.

One word: Globalization.

Suddenly, both groups were aware of each other. The Sirens were much more isolated, so it took them longer to figure out, but being less fearful they immediately decided to meet up with the others. The seperation in parts of the world was a choice- they could go anywhere. With this new freedom created by the descision to travel off of their pefect island, the groups spread out.

Winged have a naturally ferocious and careless nature. Harpies had adopted to the idea of gangs and criminality much earlier, willing to do anything to survive, and Sirens followed soon after simply because they were good at it, and while racism was rampant it was good to set yourself up as one of the powerful peoples.

The Winged interbred after that, which was no problem as the only difference between them was basically race, and not even that strong a divide. Plus, Winged were regularily born- basically mutants created from the magical atmosphere covering this version of the world- further closing the divide that didn't exist in the first place. Other gangs sprung up- the Angels, the Demons, the Ghosts, the Seraph.

***

Now some general magic worldbuilding: In this version of the world, there is ambient magic everywhere. The peoples all have scientifically plausible bodies and powers, but there's that extra touch of magic that allows for mages and Winged, faeries being the otherworldly beings they are, dimensional gateways, and generally giving this world a sense of flare. It's a scientific thing similar to radiation, it's caused by light and belief and weird things below the ground, it's sometimes called Quintessence and considered one of the five elements. Philosophers have theories it makes up everything in the world, and it's cool as heck.

@Blue Moon: Thanks for the Winged world building. Very helpful. I have now a new idea for the Elven folk and I wanted to check with you. Could the Elven folk originally be from North America or the part of the world that is kinda like ancient North America? I was thinking that it would be cool if their culture is based on Native American society, especially the Iroquois nation. That explains why they are elemental and in tune with nature. But since N.A. got developed, they migrated more north and now live in what is Canada in our world. So another reason they hate Winged is colonization. Cool?

Also, when does the RP start? Thanks!

Note- all people who have reserved characters need to submit their sheets by the 2nd. We've gotten a lot of Winged, so it'd be cool if someone could do a dragon, or one of the other races, as well as a male or nonbinary character instead of a girl.

The RP should start on the third, or earlier if everyone wants to!

We can work on a plot once I manage to get on my laptop :) I've been in exactly one roleplay that finished, and  the members worked out a strong (ish) plot near the beginning, so I think it woud be good if we did that too.

What if all but a few of the Wingeds get abducted or brainwashed or something and the rest have to find them and save them? And somehow they affect the other races so they help too?

That's a good idea, but I'd like to mess with it a bit. I don't think it should be only Winged, even though that might be easier to bend into a plot, because people might like to have their non-Winged characters be captured. I mentioned something in the ocean in the intro- maybe they could be captured in the ocean, or by some new, mysterious type of ocean being, or both. If we run with this, people should write who they want to be captured (of their own characters) and who they want to go rescue them. I think both groups will be active rescuing/escaping, and then eventually reunite to fight whoever kidnapped them. Good?
