Elemental Solo Write

Elemental Solo Write

Four islands lie above a sea of nothingness--four kingdoms, four peoples, four elements, all carefully balanced.
Earth, a rich, fertile kingdom, whose people farm and prosper, and whose cities are thick with the sounds of merchants hawking their wares.
Air, a kingdom of tall mountains, whose lofty spires reach till they look like they can touch the sky, and whose people study and grow lerned.
Fire, a desert kingdom of sand, whose rolling dunes conceal secrets, and whose people carve caverns into the sandstone cliffs, delving deep into the rock.
Water, a harsh, cold kingdom, whose people survive and become strong, building cities and castles through labor and determination.

Until now, the kingdoms have been at peace, knowing that war could break the balance, tip the scales, and bring ruin upon all of them. Flying to and fro in huge balloons or airships, wary, but secure, they have traded.
Until now. Rumor has spread that the people of the fire kingdom have stolen the earth kingdom's Cordis Stone--each kingdom has one, a stone or gem infused with magical power. If the rumers are true, and if the fire people cannot be stopped, they will attack the now weakened earth kingdom, and the destruction could mean the end of all the four kingdoms. Secretly, members of all of the kingdoms have banded together, calling themselves the Elementals. They plan to restore the Earth Cordis stone to the earth kindom. If the tales are true, the stone has been placed in the center of the fire kingdom, deep within an abandoned system of maze-like caves. But what dangers must be faced to recover it? Can all of the Elementals be trusted?

@AW that looks great! You do such a good job with color and texture. She looks different from how I imagined, but in a good way, like I get to see a new side of her from someone else's perspective.

Name: Evryn Malee, usually goes by ‘Vryn’

Age: 21

Gender: Female

Nationality: Earth

Appearance: She has chocolate brown hair in a pixie cut, usually tousled and swept back away from her eyes. Her eyes are hazel, and she has tanned skin from working in the sun. She’s a little shorter than average height, and has a strong build and calloused hands. She usually wears a forest green tunic and brown trousers.

Background: She’s the only child of a farmer and his wife, so she grew up working out in the fields. She’s used to hard work, and she’ll take over the farm when her father retires. Since she’s their only child, her parents are protective of her, but they understand for the most part that she’s independent and can’t be stopped when she sets her mind to something. Vryn works hard mainly to support her parents, because they’re getting older and she doesn’t want them to have to work as much as they do.

Personality: As mentioned, she’s independent and goal-oriented, if she sets her mind to something she’ll work hard until she gets there. She values honesty and loyalty, and is slow to trust new people. She can be stoic around people she doesn’t know, but once she warms up to them it’s easier to get her to open up.

Quirks: If she’s working out a problem, she’ll talk to herself, sort of just muttering under her breath to help work out her thoughts.

Flaws: She can tend to focus in on one aspect of a person or situation, so she’ll need help seeing the bigger picture sometimes. She’s also not one to give second chances- if someone betrays her trust, she’ll shut them out immediately and doesn’t usually change her mind.

Are they one of the Elementals?: Yes, she wants the Earth Cordis returned to her people, and is set on helping in any way she can.

Part 1.

The Airship landed on the dune with a soft shushing sound, throwing sand up on the sides of the prow in two honey colored sprays. The occupants of the boat, most of whom had been sleeping, wakened with a jerk at the unexpected jolt. They had been flying since before down, and the blazing sun was almost overhead.

Only Evryn, who had been steering the boat, had resisted the urge to give in to the gentle rocking motion, and had stayed awake. The other five started to recover from their long rest.

Cyraeus, who had been leaning against a corner, stretched his cramped neck and checked his belt to ensure that his knife was in place.

Galadriel stood up, stretching her legs, and they bent to pick up her book, which had falled off of her lap at some point during the journey.

Darius, who had been sitting on a bench with his head against the rail, stood up and smiled.
"So, we're finally here." He said. He chuckled. "Took long enough." He brushed his hair our of his face.

Atheya, who had been curled up against the prow, her skirt making a blue pool against the deck, stood up. She turned around and reached for a handfull of sand, letting it trickle between her fingers like liquid gold. She stared up into the brilliant blue sky.

Jakra, who had been sitting on top of a trunk in the back of the ship, behind the Evryn and the tiller, sat up and stretched her arms, sighing and wishing she wasn't there. She had agreed to come on the trip as a guide in the caves when Jarnel, the head of the Elementals, had pressed her to. She had grown up near the caves and had explored them a number of times. Standing up, she opened the trunk.
"We should go before the hottest hours of the day. The entrance to the caves is half a mile ahead, if Evryn followed the chart." She said.

"I followed the chart exactly." Evryn assured her. "And please, call me Vryn."

"Put this on." Jakra said. She tossed Vryn a loose, flowing gray garment with a deep hood. Atheya, distracted by the movement of flowing cloth, turned around.

"An Integrum." She said softly.

"What did you say?" Asked Darius, who had overheard.

"An Integrum. I had read about them, but I've never seen one. They're traditional fire clothes; the hood keeps off the sun."

"You Air people," said Darius, catching his Integrum as Jakra thew it to him. "you think that you know so much, but you lack experience. That sounds a bit fishy, if you ask me."

Atheya frowned at him, but her expression softened when she saw that he was joking. She pulled her Integrum over her head and settled it on her shoulders, flipping her long hair out of the way.

While the other three were doing the same thing, Jakra glanced around, trying to find Cyraeus. She turned to find him directly behind her. She stepped back, startled, and he held out his hand.

"May I have my Integrum?" He asked calmly. She handed it to him and pulled her own over her head. Meanwhile, Darius handed each of them a water flask and two torches. After she recieved hers, Vryn climbed over the rail and dropped lightly onto the sand. She was followed by Atheya and Galadriel. They stood awkwardly for a moment, until Atheya broke the silence.

"Hello. Would you remind me of your names?"

"Galadriel."

"Evryn, but you can call me-"

"Vryn, I remember." Atheya interupted. "Sorry, bad habit. I'm Atheya." She finished.

Vryn shifted from foot to food impatiently. "We should get moving."

Galadriel nodded. "The sooner we find the Cordis, the better. I don't like underground spaces." The three were silent till the others joined them.

They walked for a quarter of an hour before they reached the cave. The first sign of the entrance was a large dune, at least twice as tall as the ones around it. As they skirted the base, a wind blew sand down onto them, and they were grateful for the deep hoods of their Integrums. When she reached the opposite side of the dune, Jakra stopped. The rest drew level with her, then stopped as well, staring at the side of the dune, which was made of what looked like solid sandstone. No entrance was visible.

"The entrance shifted since I was here last. The caves sometimes act...strangely." Jakra said.

"But there is an entrance?" Asked Darius.

"Yes, there is an entrance."

"Then I'm sure we can find it if we look hard enough."

Darius went to the sandstone and started prodding it. Vryn followed him, muttering to herself, while Galadriel stayed at a safe distance. Jakra scanned the wall for any sign of an opening, and Atheya, after taking a long look at the stone, stared up at the sky, deep in thought.

In the middle of this, Cyraeus, who had been staring intently at the wall, walked over to it and pushed up firmly on a potruding chunk of sandstone. For a moment nothing happened, and then, with a rumbling sound, a chunk underneath that point fell away, revealing a small dark opening. Cyraeus stepped back quickly, waving dust away from his face. Vryn, startled, tore her gaze away from the sky and stepped over to the wall.

"That," started Darius,

"Was not there before." Vryn finished. Realizing she had interrupted, she apologized, but no one was paying attention. Jakra lit a torch, then used hers to light one of the ones that Darius carried. Atheya moved to light hers as well, but Jakra stopped her. They had to conserve materials. Darius led the way into the cave, followed by the others. Galadriel went in last, frightened, but determined not to show it. As soon as she was all the way into the cave, an extra strong gust of wind sent a wave of sand rolling down the side of the dune, completely covering the cave entrance.

Galadriel shrieked as the light of the sun was cut off by a wall of sand, leaving only the flickering light of the two torches. There was a moment of silence, which Cyraus broke.

"It seems that the only way to go-"

"Is in." Vryn finished.

~~~
"Did the fire really steal the Cordis?"
"Seems likely, doesn't it? After all, they have never really liked the Earth."
"I heard that a detatchment of Elementals is going to look for the Earth Cordis. Do you think they'll find it?"
"Of course not! The main mistake of the Elementals is choosing people of different kingdoms. They can never work together."
"They are not a threat, then?"
"No, certainly not. They couldn't find the Cordis if it was in the prow of their own Airship. They'd be too busy arguing."
"So what is our plan of action?"
"For now, we wait."
"For how long?"
"However long it takes."
"And then?"
"You'll see, Leutenant, you'll see."
I know what some, six, of you are thinking. I didn't include all of the characters! To that I can only say don't worry, I will work in all of the characters.
I will post again at least by next Sunday! I would love to hear suggestions, and if I've done any of your characters wrong, please tell me how I can do better.
@Emkittycon k, I'm afraid that you posted your character a little bit too late, and I won't be able to include her. Sorry about that!
@The Story Weaver Aah I love it, even though Aura's not in it yet! It's too bad Em's character can't be in it though...
@Emekittycon K Even though she didn't get into the story, here's Marina! I tweaked her appearance so it would fit the aesthetic of the solo write a little better. Also, you might want to think about coming up with some flaws for your characters in the future, just to make them more believable? Flaws can even be as simple as "she has a tendency to eat too much" or "he's often overly loud". It's just something that's useful to think about. Anyway, here's Marina, hope you like it!
