Chatterbox: Inkwell

Little Lost Library

Little Lost Library

Hello Everybuggy! This is sort of a role play type of story. It's inspired by "Daydreams Cafe" by Miss Plum, which I absolutely loved, and the CBers' response to the "Daydreams Cafe." Enjoy!

You look around at the mysterious mist surrounding you. You have no idea where you are, and you're sure you were in the Chatterbox just a moment ago. You decide the best option would be to walk forward and hopefully find something or someone you recognize.

After walking for what feels like forever, you see a figure in the mist. Racing forward in hopes this person can tell you where in the world you are, you smile. Finally, someone else. When you get close enough to the figure to see it, you are slightly disappointed that you don't recognize this person at all. Her hair is blond, and her eyes are blueish- purple. An owl flutters in ther air next to her. She smiles at you. "Hello," she says. "I'm Periwinkle." "Periwinkle?" You repeat. "That's a cool name." Her smile widens. "Thank you, my friend!" You remember your mission to find out where you are. "Can you please help me? I need to know where I am!" Periwinkle looks at you with a twinkle in her eyes. "You are standing outside of The Little Lost Library," she answers, pointing to the tall brick building next to you. "Oh." You say. For a moment of two, there is a silence between the two of you. "Well, aren't you going inside, then?" Periwinkle asks. You are curious about what is inside, but still hesitate. "Will you come with me?" You ask. Periwinkle smiles sadly. "I cannot, my friend. But you will recognize some people inside. Best of luck!" You walk inside before you can chicken out. Inside, you are surrounded by giant bookshelves filled with books. Each bookshelf has a bronze ladder leaned against it. You grab a book and sit down at a table, with a few friends you recognize...

So, Everybuggy, what is your book about and who are you sitting near? Have fun and thanks to Miss Plum for inspiring me.

The Librarian looks at her owl. "What do you think of that name?" The owl nods slowly. "Ok, Firewing it is," The Librarian says gladly. Firewing flies over and hovers next to you. The Librarian chuckles. "I think he likes you!" She looks around her. "I'm so glad we have more visitors now. It's been pretty much empty for years." She turns her gaze back towards you. "Would you like to join me-" the owl hoots angrily- "I mean us- as we explore the library? I can show you some new places if you want. Of course, only if you aren't too busy back in the hidden spot. I wouldn't want to interrupt anything."

I squeal. "Of course, I would love to!" As I follow the Librarian, I tentatively reach out to stroke Firewing, who's perching on her shoulder. He hoots, but lets me. Soon, we're back at an opening among the hundreds of shelves, where a roaring fire dances in the fireplace. It's surrounded by cozy armchairs and beanbags. At least one of them is occupied. I glance at the Librarian, but she's busy at a nearby shelf looking at some books. "Um... Hi," I say.

"Hello," says a quiet voice. You walk towards it. A boy and a girl are sitting next to each other. The girl, who's holding a fiction book and is squished deep into a beanbag, waves at you. "Hi! I'm June. This is my brother, August." She nods at the boy next to her. They look similar. Both of them have blonde hair and greenish blue eyes, but the girl is wearing a navy blue sweater and black leggings, and the boy is wearing a black hoodie and jeans. The girl laughs. "We're twins. Our parents named both of us after months of the year!" August does not laugh. He barely looks up from his book, which is all about astronomy. He's sitting straight up in his armchair, and doesn't move at all except to reach out and grab a cookie from the plate on the table next to him. "River just stopped by," says June. "Would you like a sugar cookie?" She holds out the plate to you.

I hope this is okay. I didn't know if you wanted to talk to a CBer or a character, so I waited to see if any CBers responded. When they didn't, I just made some characters.

"Of course, I would love a cookie!" I say, and take one from the plate she offers. "It's nice to meet you. I'm MoonKitten. I met River. Did she find the owl and cat she was looking for? What book are you reading? Wait. Are you two Dreamers?"

Sorry this is late. Yeah, that's fine!

June smiles at you as she puts the plate back. "MoonKitten is such a cool name," she says. "I don't think River found the owl and cat you are talking about, if I understand you correctly, you're talking about Periwinkle's owl, Wanderer, and her little cat friend, who doesn't have a name. The cat's a stray, and she just kind of comes and goes. Sometimes the Dreamers call her Clueless, because she has that kind of expression on her face that just kind of says 'what?' If you know what I mean. River has been trying to find them for a long time. It's pretty rare to run into them both at the same time, and River is still mad at Wanderer for stealing some of her homemade cookies." June laughs, then looks down at her book. "Oh, I'm just rereading Harry Potter and the Socerer's Stone. It's my favorite book!" She pauses to take a bite of a sugar cookie covered in rainbow sprinkles. August looks up from his book. "I'm a Dreamer, she's not." He leans back in his chair and looks up at the celing, which is very far away because this is a tall building. "I'll never understand why the library picked me and not you, June. You're so much better at this job. You've read the entire guidebook. You've made entries in the Endless Notebook. But I got this job, and I didn't even want it." He pauses. "Well, I didn't not want it. I just would've been perfectly happy living my entire life as a Reader, getting lost in the nonfiction section." He takes a bite of an oatmeal choclate chip cookie. "Anyways," says June, "What brings you to the Little Lost Library?"

Hello, I hope its okay that I've joined in late. This really intrigued me.

It seems like I've been flying over this forest for hours. I really shouldn't take "getting a breath of fresh air" to the next level like this, but I feel so at home flying under the stars. I stop gliding over the air abruptly because of what looks like a building below me. Strange that someone would build something so deep into a misty forest, I think to myself. But curiosity overtakes reason and shoot down to the mysterious building. I find myself staring at a tall brick building, with a simple wooden sign titling it "The Little Lost Library".

Just then, a little blue owl swoops down from seemingly no where and drops a piece of paper at my feet. Than, it swoops away. I pick up the parchment, interested.

This the Little Lost Library, the place for all the Dreamers of this world. If you have any questions, just write it down and give it to one of the animals.

-The librarian

I look up at the doors, and feel a little thrill of adventure. I push them open excitedly and I see the thrilling sight of millions of books. There are bookshelves full to the brim with books, maps, games, stationary, and I even spot a water color paint set. There are cozy little reading areas with plush chairs. I know, intuitively, that this place has many nooks and crannies.

"Hello" I say nervously. "Is anyone here?"

I have to consider June's question for a moment. "I guess I'm not entirely sure. I was walking through the Inkwell... and then there was mist, but I don't remember how it got there. And then Periwinkle came, and she showed me the Library. I'm glad she did," I add with a smile. "Wait. August, you said the Library picked you. So it is magic. Right?"

June opens her mouth to answer, but before she can, a voice calls, "Hello? Is anyone here?" The words June was about to say switch to something different. "I can explain later. Do you want to come meet someone new?"

I nod happily and follow June back to the entrance. August comes too. There's a person standing in the doorway. "Hi," I say quietly.

@Star Princess, I'm glad you came!

"Hi" says a quiet voice

The voice comes from a group of three, who seem to have come from within the depths of the library to greet me. "Um, what is this place?" I ask, feeling confused. "Honestly, I don't really know myself" says one of them, chuckling lightly, "All I know is that it has lots of books, and I'm glad for that." "Yeah, I can tell!" I say, warming a little to these mystery people.

"Who are you?", one of them asks. "My name is Solara Borealis, but you can just call me Star" I reply. "My name is MoonKitten, and these are June and August", says the one who replied to me.  "It's nice to meet you!", says the one called June. "Would you like it if we showed you around a little?"

"Of course! Where is the fantasy section? This is a library right?"

August speaks up for the first time "It's a whole lot more than a library.".

<@Moonkitten, thanks, thats so sweet!

@Star Princess, thanks for joining. You seem pretty caught up on these characters, but if you need any explanation on them, let me know. Have fun! :D

You, June, and MoonKitten have been talking so much that you don't notice that August has slipped away. "Back to the nonfiction shelves, I bet," says June. "Should we go look for him or let him be?"

"We should probably leave him be. If he loves nonfiction as much as you say than I won't bother him." I say, recalling June telling us about her brother's obsession with nonfiction.

June chuckles "He flys into a towering rage whenever someone interrupts his reading."

Moonkitten laughs "Don't we all?"

"I guess so" I say, grinning. "Where are we?" I say, looking around. "Wow, I really lost track of time" says June, also looking around. "We are in the Art Faction, the place where people can create and exhibit art."

The Art Faction is cluttered with easels, crafts supplies, paint, crayons, colored pencils, sketchbooks, and all kinds of other art supplies. Hanging from the walls are paintings, sketches, and tapestries, there is a wooden box full of used sketch books. There are book shelves pushed against the wall full to the brim with books about artists, art, art history, and techniques.

"Wow" Moonkitten and I sigh in union. "Just when I thought this place couldn't get any better" Moonkitten says admiringly. I nod in agreement, eyeing some oil paints. June smiles proudly, and says "This is probably my favorite part of the library. I spend most of my time sketching wildlife and animals. Some of the sketch books in that box are mine." She indicates to the wooden box full of old sketchbooks.

"This place is full of wonders." I say in awe.

Years ago.

The Enchantress sighed and looked at the portal, knowing her time was up. She drummed her fingers on the side of the throne, waiting. Then she heard a voice. "Y-you sent for me, Enchantress?" It said. Anika appeared in the doorway. "Yes," answered The Enchantress. "Anika, we're out of time. This place can't take the magic. It was never magic. We need to put it somewhere that's been magic from the very beginning, somewhere with people who could protect it. I know you know more about this world than anyone. Where could we send it?" Anika paused. "Well... there is one place. It's this little library in the Forest of Memories. They call it The Little Library. It has a bit of magic in it, and enough people to protect it. But you'll need a Leader..." The Enchantress looked at Anika. "Okay. You and your brother will go to this place and protect it with everyone else there. And from now on, it shall be known as The Little Lost Library."

~ooOOoooh, this is getting interesting :) I can't wait to find out how the Enchantress fits in!~

I glance at June. "Do you mind if I look at your sketches?" I ask her, and she nods.

"Sure, go ahead!"

I walk to the wooden chest and open its lid with a creak. There's a puff of dust, but the sketchbooks are fine. I pick one at random and flip through, it, admiring the lines and colors. "You're a really good artist, June! I love this one of the foxes." Star, who's been looking over my shoulder, nods her agreement.

June grins. "Thanks!" Then she frowns. "Maybe we should go try and find August. He likes his nonfiction, but he doesn't usually stay away so long without letting me know."

I glance at Star, and we agree. June leads us to the nonfiction section. But August isn't there.

"Hmm. Where could he have gone?" June asks the question nervously. Then, she screams quietly. "What? What is it?!" You both ask. She points at a small, brownish-white bag with a shoulder strap on the floor. "That's August's book bag! He always puts the books he wants to check out in there because he always finds more books than he can carry. He would never put it down in the library, at least not in the nonfiction section." She turns to you guys and gives you a nervous look. "I know it sounds like an odd thing to worry about, but... Can we look for him somewhere else? I can't imagine where he would have wandered off. He never goes back up to his room without telling me." You both nod. She leads you all around the library, and it is beautiful. You finally stop in front of a painting with a woman and a man in it. The woman has dirty blonde hair and shiny brown eyes. The man has black hair and green eyes. The painting has a small label under it that says "Andrew Winters and his sister, Anika Winters." "I've never been this deep in the library before," says June. "I think that Andrew Winters was the First Librarian." "Wow," you say. "Yeah, it's really cool, but I really want to find August! Can we come back after we find him?" Asks June. "Ok," says the other CBer. You wander on and on, but you don't find him. Suddenly, you hear a voice.

-Okay, I'm going to let you guys decide what this voice is. @MoonKitten, glad you're intrigued!-
