CB Novelette Collab!

CB Novelette Collab!

CB Novelette Collab!

This started on NaNo (lol there has been so many mentions like that on here the past few days) and I want to continue it! Basically, we played a synopsis-writing game then decided to write some of them as novelettes and compile them together! We were going to have a common string throughout them all -- we were thinking maybe a portal that has one small but distinctive detail the same each time.

What is a novelette? Good question! There are novels (I am going to hope you know what those are) and shorter than that is a novella and shorter than that is a novelette! (I think, I could be using the totally wrong word XD) we were thinking about 5000-20000 words in length each.

Right! Good job of explaining that, Feli! The novelette I'm writing is title Not My King. I can't remember the exact synopsis, but I'll write down what I can remember:

Ilia Synase's brother has just died, and now the kingdom of [undetermined] is left kingless. Her three-year-old nephew, the prince and destined king, is in her care. Because his father is dead, he is the new ruler of [undetermined], despite not even being able to read. Fortunately, [undetermined] has a law that may be of help. The minimum age of the king is ten. Because her nephew is not yet ten, Ilia must rule in his place, because the next-of-kin must rule if the heir is too young. Ilia rules [undetermined] for seven years, ruling much better than anyone thought a woman could. But what happens when her nephew come of age to rule, and Ilia is not willing to bow her head to him?

Lumi, if you can remember more than me, can you supply some words for me? Like the name of the kingdom, or Ilia's last name.

I think the kingdom was called Kitesse? But feel free to change that if you don't like it. I didn't give Ilia a last name but I think the one you chose works and other than that I think that you nailed the synopsis!

@Silver Crystal, if you'd like to come up with a title, I'll write a synopsis for you, or I can come up with a title and you can write a synopsis and use that one, or we could use Wree's idea to continue the title game on BaB which we should probably do anyways because #ReviveBaB.

My story is called Trains and Tribulations, and it's about a teenager (?)(I haven't decided their age) named Persnickety Snodgrass. Persnickety is bored and feels trapped in their small town of (name TBD). Their parents are absent a lot of the time and when they ARE there, they're busy getting ready for whatever next meeting is coming next.

And Persnickety still hasn't completely forgiven their parents for naming them "Persnickety".

Unbeknownst to Persnickety, though, their parents do care about them.

But anyways, Persnickety decides they need to get out of here. So they buy a ticket to a train leaving at midnight, going anywhere but here.

They pass the time sleeping and listening to "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey on repeat.

(Please say someone gets the reference.)

At the last stop, Persnickety gets off in another small town. They plan to just stay the night and hop on another train to the city, but morning comes and after paying for food and a place to sleep, Persnickety is out of money.

They are officially stranded.

This is not going the way Persnickety imagined, at all.

Omg I love that reference <3

Also, I think I'll try to start up the title game on BaB 'cause #ReviveBaB, and then I'll take one from there. If anyone wants to pop in and contribute we could use it for anyone else that wants to join.

Is there any room for us CBers who weren't on NaNo?

I think so! We have a couple synopsies left that no one's taken, although if you don't want to write them you can probably just make up something. The only untaken one I can think of is "The Scraggiest Pen" which is about an old man who writes novels but never got them published, and a kid basically tries to get him discovered.

While I'm here, my novellete is A Safe Space, which is about a girl (still deciding on a name, but I'm calling her Maggie rn) who has some sort of power that's banned in her world, and when it's discovered she runs away, but then gets captured and taken to jail (well, more like a prison camp), where she meets friends like her and they try to escape and show the world that they should be accepted. I'm also planning on having a thing where Maggie's sister helps them escape? Tell me if you have ideas.

I mean probably, sure! Over on BaB, on a thread called "Title Game" they are playing basically the same thing, so I guess you can ask to do one from there.

Here is a synopsis of mine. It isn't the same words as what was written because that has been lost -- it is shorter and gives less information, more back-of-the-book style.

Capital T

The town of Thesbour has nothing special about it. Even something as mundane as family moving out would count as something special. That is, until strange things begin to happen in our little Thesbour and he world begins to take notice of the place. Every story will be a newspaper article documented by a mysterious "T. Timberson."
I can give you more information if you'd like, but that's the synopsis. Could y'all to offer ideas of various "strange events?" and characters? Thanks.

Maybe we should play the game for a little bit so there are some options left for CBers who haven't joined yet or those who've forgotten the stories they're writing.

Of course Silver! Mine is called Is Anybody Listening? It covers the story of Beth Montgomery. Beth is a young white woman right before Lincoln's presidency. Her father owns thousands of slaves and Beth hates the idea of humans being owned but she turns a blind eye. Her father loves to remind her that everything she is was built off him and his slaves and her mother is pretty distant woman who loves to travel. She follows her father's will until he sells her into marriage and a black woman named Ann rescues her and brings her to a northern ranch called Freedom Ranch. There escaped slaves help out on the ranch in return for freedom, food and a home. Together Beth and Ann hatch a daring plot to bring all the slaves on Henry Montgomery's (her dad) plantation to Freedom Ranch.

We should probably play the game a little bit, so we can include everyone who wants to,,,

On a different note, I was going to write True Colors and I don't remember the synopsis, but I was planning on just using my current story project and switch it up a bit to fit this novelette thing!

Ooh, yes!! I need to start writing mine, I'm so glad I wrote down the synopsis before everything disappeared. My novelette is called Not Just a Dream, it's about a girl who follows someone she saw in a dream and ends up in another dimension where she has to fight something (that was a really bad synopsis haha).

I'm writing The Choice I Didn't Make! Here's the synopsis:

Lula is perfectly fine with her perfectly normal life and is even starting to really fit in at her middle school, but everything changes when her parents announce that their family is moving to another country. Suddenly, Lula is thrown into another world where she doesn't even understand the language. With her mind so full of doubt, Lula fails to realize how much she's beginning to love her new life, until it's too late.
