Ooh, I adore retellings of fairytales, and I haven't read a whole lot of Rupunzel ones. This sounds fascinating, I'll be sure to read along!

As dark drew near, she paused to rest, feeling the tangles of hunger in her stomach. She hadn't eaten in spans, not since the bad things happened. Don't think about it. Just sleep. Hope for pleasant dreams.
It was apparantly too much for her to ask to get a night's rest. She awoke to brightly moonlit night, skin feeling like it was burning. It took her a moment to realize when she had felt that before. That night. She had to run.
So, stumbling, feet sore, so hungry, Rapunsel ran.
Behind her the dark shadows took o a viscid, grasping thickness that tripped and tangled and teased her. She found herself on the ground, thorns shoved deep into her skin, too many times to count, but she got up time and time again. The pain didn't matter. Nothing mattered but escaping the darkness.
Terror like quicksand, terror filled her lungs so she couldn't beathe as the darkness whipped at her and caught her feet and kept her down. She screamed as the viperous shadows bit into her. One thought surfaced through the panic but only added to it. There were two of them.
Like it could read her mind, the chill curled in the air/Rapunsel wailed, heart pounding, a cornered rabbit/hear thudding so painfully hard in her heaving chest. She suspected any moment she would have to fight. So, as rough hands grabbed her, she kicked and thrashed. She heard a voice but was too frantic to decipher the words. She had to fight, get free and get help.
But it was too late.
A cloth was pressed over Rapunsel's mouth.
The moonlight faded, taking Rapunsel's secrets with it.

Oh. My. Goodness.

I love it! This story is so hauntingly beautiful, even only a few paragraphs in. Based off what I know of the fairytale, I think (correct me if I'm wrong and you feel like it) this is starting off near the end of how the story is usually told, and I'm super excited to see where it goes from here. Keep it up! I love your style and the story so far.
