You sit, alone,

Chatterbox: Inkwell

You sit, alone,

You sit, alone, in a white room. Their are only three things in this room, aside from you of course.

A piano

A calender

A bed

Confused, thirsty, and hungry, you wonder how you got locked into a seemingly inescapable room.

So.... how will you escape?

Yeah, I think a head of cabbage is a thing, so it should work! And ears of corn if we wanted to be little extra, I guess. This is a great story!

We'll use the HEAD of cabbage

the EYES from the potatoes

and the EARS of corn

to make a head!

Morning studied the garden carefully, noting each plant. It didn't take long for her to find the answer.

"A head of cabbage is a thing... right?"

Periwinkle nodded and said, "I'm pretty sure a head of a cabbage is a thing. And we can use the ears of corn as ears!"

"And we can use the eyes from the potatoes." Bakerloo offered.

As they listed the items, they walked over and grabbed them.

First, Morning put the head of cabbage on the scarecrow's shoulders.

Then, Periwinkle stuck the ears of corn on.

And finally, Bakerloo added the eyes.

As they stared at their creation, the plants shifted and melted, changing into more definable eyes, ears, and head.

The scarecrow shifted, scaring them, as it slowly stood up and stretched. Warily, they watched it creak carefully over to the far wall, where it sweped aside the almost leaves.

Underneath was a simple door, strangly made of sand and with carvings of palm trees and snakes all over it.

It was with a great uneasiness that they opened and walked through the door....

The Sandy Door has been unlocked!

I love it! Can't wait for the next riddle to arrive.

You walk into the sandy looking door and sweat imediatly dots your clothes. You find yourself in a huge desert, with the sun shining down brightly over you. Not a single cloud can be seen and only a few scattered scrawny plants can be seen.

However, you really should expect this, the vastness of the desert is just an illusion as you find yourself blocked by a wall when you walk forewards to much.

When you turn around, rubbing a sore nose, you see a sphinx sprawled out in the sand.

"Three riddles for you." it says, "Answer correctly and you shall be set free. Answer incorrectly and I shall eat you."

You shiver, noticing lion's teeth inside of the sphinx's human face.

"How many tries do I get?" you ask.

The sphinx yawns and says, "Only three tries among all of you. Each riddle can be tried three times, but if your final answer is incorect..."

You look around, can you get out of this? Can you find a different path? Looking back shows the door to have disapeared, so you do the only thing you can do.

"What's the first riddle?"

Without a bridle or a saddle, across a thing I ride a-straddle. And those I ride, by help of me, though almost blind, are made to see. What am I?

New quest unlocked: The Sandy Trials

Sorry for the long wait! I'm over visiting family so it might take a while to get the next parts out!

Totally fine, take as long as you want, and enjoy your time with your family!

Could the answer to the riddle be eyeglasses? They help people see better, obviously. And I think it makes sense to say that they ride on your nose.

Thank you Morning, I'm glad you understand!

I'm back now, so I should be able to keep this up better.

~~~~~~~
Morning taps her foot on the sand, feeling warmth emenating from the floor. She runs the riddle over in her head a few times, thinking through it carefully.
The sun was setting when she found the answer.
"Could it be... eyeglasses?" she asks.
The sphinx grins and nods her head down between her large paws.
She looks up, eyes now glowing from reflected light.
My life can be measured in hours, I serve by being devoured.
Thin, I am quick. Fat, I am slow. Wind is my foe.
What am I?
Oh, I think I know this one! I'm sorry for kind of just jumping right in here halfway (is that allowed?) but I think the answer is a candle, right? Because people used to use candles to measure time, which is what the 'life measured by hours' means, it 'serves by being devoured' by being lit on fire, it burns faster when it's thinner and vice versa, and wind blows out the flame.
Is it too late to jump in? This seems really fun!
It is never to late to join in. I had always imagined that people would jump in at any time, with no need to worry.
~~~~~

The desert has grown frigid with the setting of the sun. Silver Crystal rubs her arms together, shivering in the stillness. The moon offers the only light, coating everything in a pale silver glow and washing everything out.

"Is it a...candle?"

The sphinx flicks her tail around before getting up and stretching, digging deep furrows in the sand with their claws.

"Correct. One last riddle." the sphinx purrs.

I can be quick and then I'm deadly,
I am a rock, shell, and bone medley.
If I was made into a man, I'd make people dream,
I gather in my millions: by ocean, by sea, and by stream.

What I am?

(July 16, 2021 - 2:21 pm)

Ooh, is it sand? “I can be quick and then deadly” refers to adding “quick” to the beginning of the word to create the word “quicksand” which can kill you. “I am rock, shell, and bone medley” refers to whaf sand is made out of— crushed rocks, shells, and bones. “If I was made into a man, I’d make people dream” refers to the sandman which I’m pretty sure is a man of myth who visits your dreams. And of course there’s plenty of sand in oceans, seas, and streams.

By the way when you’re typing the sphinx’s response out, I use pronouns she/her.

I was also going to say sand, I just didn't get the sandman reference so I wasn't sure. It makes sense, though. Also, I use the pronouns she/her as well.

I thought it was sand too but I was worried I'd get it wrong XD but yeah I agree with Raven and Hunter

... I know she/her is normally used for sphinxes, I used they/them purposely because they don't know what the sphinx's gender is. It gives it a more mysterious vibe and I believed it was more appropriate for the situation.

Going back and reading the passage I see that I used "her" first, but that was a typo. My bad!

(July 20, 2021 - 8:06 pm)

Ah, sorry for any confusion. I didn’t mean the sphinx used she/her. I was just noting that you typed out responses from the person who responded’s perspective using their pronouns, so I was stating mine so you’d know which to use. Again, sorry if I confused you.
