You wake up,

Chatterbox: Inkwell

You wake up,

You wake up, blinking the sleep from your eyes, and look around. You appear to be sitting in a stone tower. There is a small pile of straw, and a wooden table with a single chair. What is this place? You think.

A sudden pain sears through your head and you realize that you have a horrible headache. You try to stand up. Twice, you fall and hit the hard stone floor. You are finally able to rise, but you feel weak. You look around for a door or a window, but there is nothing. Only the pile of straw and the table. Then how did you get here in the first place? You think back, or, at least, try to. You can't remember... Anything. When you try to shed light on the past, all you feel is an endless darkness, cold and empty.
On the wooden table, there is a book and a small mirror. With weak, shaking hands, you lift the mirror and look at yourself. You are wearing a simple, worn out tunic with a piece of string for a belt. You don't know why or how, but there is some understanding in your mind that you do not own this tunic. This just arises more questions than answers, however.
You reach for the book, which has no words on the cover. The cover is purple with a gold crest. You open it and read the first page:
Ravens surround it in empty wind
It brings who is inside to despair
Welcome to Stoneglass Tower
Where sorrow will fill all the air.
Stoneglass Tower, you think, and you come to the realization that you are a prisoner. A shiver runs down your spine, and you turn the page.
This page has a drawing of a long window and a bookmark with a key hanging from the end of it. Suddenly knowing exactly what to do, you lift the bookmark and press it into one of the stones on the wall. The drawing fades from the book and the window appears on the wall. You smile, but the smile fades away as you look out and see endless fog. You are impossibly high, and there is no way down. All you see are mountains in the distance and raves flying past the window.
A raven lands on the windowsill, and, amazingly, speaks. "Ah, you are awake."
You jump back, shocked. What would you like to say?

"Who are you?  What's going on?"

"I am a raven." Answers the talking raven. "It's nothing special that I can talk. We can all talk. Right, Roberto?"

Another raven that is flying past the window shouts something in French.

"As for your other question. I will tell you what is going on. You have woken up in a tower and you do not remember anything and your head hurts and you can't get out."

"Y-yes," you say, surprised. "How did you know that?"

"Because it happens all the time. But you're not getting out. Nobody who's ever been here has."

"So there are other people here?"

"No."

"Then how--"

"Enough questions!" The raven gets frustrated. "I have to go back to flying around this tower so you can't escape. He flops into the air and goes back to circling it with Roberto and the other birds. The raven wasn't much help.

You frown and look around the room. What would you like to do next?

I lean my head out the window, and when I'm sure it's the same raven as before who comes flying by my window, I yell out to him, "Wait! I have one more question!"

The raven comes flying back, and lands on the window sill with a sigh. "What is it?"

"Aren't you supposed to be haunting a poet and saying, 'Nevermore'?

Hahaha this is awkward. In a roleplay with my namesake.

I say, "Where... where am I?"

The raven has landed back on the windowsill, impatient.

"You are in Stoneglass Tower. And nevermore. Are you happy now?"

"Well, how am I supposed to get out?"

The raven gets a cunning look in its eyes. "You aren't. But you do get some things to help you try."

You turn around. The pile of straw has turned into long blonde hair, like Rapunzel's. The chair is now a pair of wax wings.

"Rapunzel's hair and... Icarus's wings?"

"Yes. Classic ways to escape towers. But this is not a classic tower." The raven winks, then flutters back to his group.

I pick up the wings and try them on. Knowing the story of Icarus, I know they might not hold up very well. So I tie Rupunzel's hair to table leg, and around the windowsill, and hold on to the other end, to make a saftey "net" if I fall. Then, I crawl out the window and test the wings.

The wax wings carry you out the window, and you see that the sun is covered up by endless gray clouds. For a moment, you fly, free and happy, and then--

Rapunzel's hair slips out of your hands.

Caught off gaurd, you lose your focus and start plunging down to the earth.

You try to scream, but no sound comes out.

End of Chapter One

Your eyes flicker open. It's dark, but there's a small fire going in front of you. You look up and see a teenage boy with blonde hair and olive skin, adding a few sticks to the fire. His eyebrows fly up when he sees you. "You're awake! Good. Got a little worried for a second there. How are you feeling?"

The boy's shoulders sag at your question. "They really do never escape," he sighs to himself. "I'm Nick. We used to be friends. Well, we still are. You just... Don't remember me anymore." He looks really, really sad, like he just heard that his best friend died or something. He looks around. "We're in the woods, a few miles out from Main Way."

You attempt to stand up, but you fall over. "Gah!"

Nick's eyes widen. "You okay?" He asks as you wiggle back into a sitting position. "You had a pretty long fall. I'd be careful if I were you. Take it easy, okay? I'm going back to sleep. I suggest you do, too. We'll keep on going towards Main Way tomorrow.

You're about to ask what Main Way is when Nick turns over and goes to sleep.

Bend over and shake him.

"Hey!  No.  I will keep you up all night if I have to if you don't explain to me why I'm here."

Nick's eyes flicker open, and he sighs. "Still stubborn as ever. At least that terrible man didn't take that away."

"So, why am I here?!" You ask, impatient.
"You fell down and hit the ground, I assume, anyway, and I found you so I took you back to my camp. You were out for a few hours."
"But you said we were friends. How did you just find me?"
"Well," Nick says with a sly grin, "I was looking for you, of course."
You feel very frustrated. "Why were you looking for me?"
"We're part of the same rebellion. Against Ovalor. Ovalor is technically our king, but everyone hates him. He charges impossibly high taxes and captures as many rebels as he can." Nick shivers. "We don't know what he does to them. None of the captured remember what happens. They don't remember anything."
"So... Ovalor owns Stoneglass Tower?" You ask.
"That's what it's called? Not a bad title, really. Yes, Stoneglass Tower is the main prison for every rebel. They all escape, though." You're about to tell him that that is not what the raven said when he continues, "That's the idea. Escaping. Because you never really get to go home. You don't even remember where home is. Lot worse of a punishment than just being locked in a tower 'till you die, don't you think? It's punishment to all the rebels." He looks sad again. "Any more questions?"
"Just one... W-what's my name?"
He blinks, then says, "Xen."
