'Prompt' Exchange

Chatterbox: Inkwell

'Prompt' Exchange

'Prompt' Exchange Thread!

A thread for random ideas you thought up but are probably never going to write/a place to brainstorm cool plots, whether or not you end up going any further.

Maybe you'll inspire someone else with cute, heartfelt, mysterious, angsty, or flat-out weird ideas? Maybe you have a really cool first line or interesting premise, but don't know where to use it? Maybe you're looking for something to motivate or inspire you, but don't know where to start? Or perhaps you just want to design an OC without writing a whole story, or concoct an outline for an overly-convoluted scheme? Perhaps you really want to see more post-apocalypse cyberpunk or a fresh take fantasy or pure fluff-mance stories, or something niche and oddly specific, and want to egg random people on until they finally write it for you?

Well why not try exchanging with others? Drop off ideas that you might not want to write an entire thing about, and pick up other people's ideas to test them out. Maybe you'll find a new favourite genre or writer; maybe you'll finally cure your writers' block. Challenge yourself! And of course, have fun!

I'm still waiting on a miracle / I just want to shine, like all of you shine

Just watched part of Encanto in Spanish class, those lines from Mirabel's song really hit hard.

I'll honestly prolly be back later with even more.

The wind blew, a streak of bitter and chill over a field of golden warmness. Leaves on the big tree in the centre tousled breezily, softly chattering like school-children.

Someone lie there, burrowed --or sprawled, rather-- in the high sunbleached grasses at the foot of the tree, unafraid of the snakes or mice or dirt or whatever else might find them in this vulnerable state.

It was in this way that Daisy met Mara that day.

I plan on using this in a short I'm writing, but anyone can borrow the general ambiance or idea.

So I've kind of created an entire world with a friend... here is the prologue from a story I'm writing based the world. For reference, a taen is basically a big, red, not-that-intelligent, dinosour-like animal. Angels are kind of like superheros, with elemental powers. After the prologue, I go into Myrtle and Ben's story some more, so that's not just a compleately unrelated part at the end. I'd love some feedback.

A herd of taen stampeded across the jungle. They ran past bushes, through vines, under trees. They ran over the entrance to a tomb, over the evil hidden within. They rushed away quickly, but the damage was done.

Far beneath the damaged entrance, a rock fell onto a sleeping form. The monster awakened. Stretched. Red eyes glowed. The ancient magic that surrounded the monster slowly swirled around. The demon was awake.

It briefly contemplated breaking out, eating the taen. It could use the food, after so many years locked away.

No. It would bide its time. Wait for its plan to be in motion. Wait for the angels to be at its mercy. Wait for revenge.

And so, it settled down to wait.

Only once. Only once did it let itself break its silent pact. Only once did it let itself out. Only once, when its hunger overcame itself, did it let itself eat some prey—two party penguins by the names of Myrtle and Ben.

Ooh, you got me hooked! You've got a nice build-up and mysteriousess going as you set the scene.

I really just have small fluency-based suggestions since everything else was so well done:

> Instead of using 'ran' twice in a row in the 2nd and 3rd sentences of the 1st paragraph, maybe considering saying "They barreled forward; crackling bushes, mushing vines, whizzing past thick ancient trees-- nothing could stop them. Even as their talons gauged away at the entrance of a tomb, they never hesitated. Thus, unlocked was the previous that lie within." I also added just a little more description and stylization, to make the world more vivid and my authorial 'voice' more apparent, but you can come up with your own adjectives/way of improving imagery. (I would leave the first line, but would tweak the rest of that paragraph, for clarification.) Or just leave it, if you like your version how it is already.

< Love that 2nd paragraph, it really establishes that ominous, fearsome mood, and I have no real fixes for that section. Nice job!

> I would, again, use slightly stronger, more distinct language: (beginning paragraph 3) "It thought, alone in the dark. Anger within began to bubble and pop like hot, angry magma just below the surface. The creature considered smashing up and devouring the taen; revealing its huge form to the world once again and wreaking bloody destruction upon the scarred earth. But it knew better, for it was no fool." and then I would combine that 3rd paragraph with the fourth;

> The first (2) sentence(s) is/are great, but maybe use a comma or double-hypen after the 'no' instead of a full-stop, it's a tad unnecessary. Then, (starting w/ the next entence)"Wait for the gears of its plot to begin creaking into motion, slowly but surely. Wait for the angels to have no choice but to fall to its mercy. Wait for its revenge to clamp down on everyone who had opposed it." And you could honestly ignore that last sentence I suggested and leave it as "Wait for its revenge." That may actually have even stronger of an impact. I really like that repetition you included here with all the 'wait's, but each of the following parts were worded ever-so-slightly awkwardly. That's not to say it's bad by any means, though.

> Finally, last paragraph! For the first and second sentences I might say instead "There was only one time. One time that its silent pact was broken." Then continuing on; "Only once did it let itself succumb to the over-powering hunger-- and its prey just so happened to be two party penguins by the names of Myrtle and Ben."

Obviously, these are all just suggestions and personal taste, so don't be intimidated or disappointed by anything I said here. If you don't want to, don't bother changing anything, and don't feel pressured to; make your story the way you like it! You've got a really promisingly start already! Good luck! :)

I have a lot of trouble coming up with ideas, since every time I get a new one, I abandon the one I was working on! Here's one of my abandoned ideas:

I have never ever gotten a letter before. And yet, here one is, addressed to me, in our family mailbox.

Honestly relatable, 'abandoning' ideas.

Also, interesting hook; I could see something growing out of this!

He remembers

Spring wind, carrying a residual chill;

He remembers

The white manor, dusted in verdant vines;

He remembers

Sitting between trellises, cool shade lazily cast;

He remembers

The scent of grasses, warmed by summer's shine--

He remembers

But cannot return, for nothing will ever be the same.

I wrote this poem a bit vaguely on purpose and wouldn't mind if someone used this as inspiration to come up with their own a backstory/explanation!

Hello, I'm new to Kyngdom. Can I create a character and post the charrie sheet here to start a story? I've been thinking of one . . .

Yes, you certainly can create a new character. I'm not up on all the details of the various threads. Maybe a Chatterboxer who is more familiar with them will give you a more detailed reply.

First off, welcome! Nice to meet you!

Secondly, sure, we wouldn't mind if you put a character sheet here!

However, if you want to start an RP or story on your own, you might want to just start a new thread (that would probably fit best in the Inkwell tab). That way everything is more organised and easier to find for readers who want to keep up with you and your work.

Still, the choice is up to you! If you want to post your charrie sheet and first story snippets here, go ahead! And if later, you decide you start your own thread using what you posted here, that's alright too!

Good luck, and don't hold back from asking any questions you might have! :)

Thank you, Jaybells!

Hiya! So I know a lot of you write short (or long!) stories, and related writing'y-stuff, which is part of why you're here, yea?

Well, Lupine just had the lowkey brilliant idea to start a thread to help / offer suggestions to your writing! I encourage you all to check over there if you have any drafts, even if they're incomplete, and are worried about the quality, or would just like to run it by some people before posting a final version elsewhere.

Of course, you're still welcome to post that on here too, but you're probably more likely to get more responses over there! Good luck and happy writing everyone~

Heya!

Does anybody what to make a fantasy world with me? I've been kinda listless lately and want to create something mysterious... Like, the story of something happening in the shadowy coolness of beneath the desert, told in whispers by torchlight; beginning under a sky of stars, seperated by layers of sand, but slowly creeping into basements across continent...

Anyone interested? You can come up with an actual story/characters, and I'll just add little snippets of world-building, if that's okay.

I'd like to help! I'm not great at generating characters, but I'll help with story and world-building...
