*A Travel Guide to Northwest Kyngdom That is Totally Not Top Secret and Has Nothing to Do with Anything Important

So you want to take a trip to Northwest Kyngdom? Wonderful! Pack your bags, grow an extra layer of fur, and hop onto the Badger Express, the high-speed badger-drawn train that will carry you northward.

Travel tip: The Badger Express has a wonderful dining car that serves a creamy, piping-hot soup called Pinesüppe: root vegetables simmered for hours with pine needles and topped off with a rich drizzle of sap.

Once you disembark, take a moment to notice how your breath turns into an intricately-patterned fog in the air. There is a magic to northwest Kyngdom that no one can explain--almost everything here, no matter how dangerous, is aesthetically pleasing. Gaze at the fields of soft, untouched snow, the evergreens glimmering with icicles so elaborate that you would have sworn they were carved by artists, and the aurora borealis that dance through the sky like omens of a better life. This is the home of Regina, the Silver Reindeer, who is…just your average reindeer!

Travel tip: Pack light but warm! Bring lots of high-protein snacks--we recommend grubs! Regina is the guardian of Hoof!

Though Regina looks so noble so as to be unapproachable, she is actually very friendly, and loves showing newcomers around her land. She lives in a mansion (nobody said reindeer weren’t materialistic!) that she named Jökull, the Old Norse word for ice. It is a place of good cheer, where the super-sweet juice of the local Winter Black Cherry flows year-round (delicious over ice or warmed up!). Zephyra loves to spend her holidays here.

Travel tip: Examine Regina closely when she walks. Three of her feet are shod in beautiful mother-of-pearl horseshoes that glimmer when she walks, but the fourth bears only a rusty horseshoe. Look closely at that horseshoe. I think you know what it is. Don’t you?

Regina will warn you about the forest of blue juniper trees that look so appealing and smell like Christmas on a platter. This is the Decoy Forest, and its pull is strong. When you walk through it--which you should never do--you will see what you want to see. Lost loves will cry out to you from the trees. Your mother, as a teenager, may appear, begging you to be her friend. Ignore them all. Have another mug of Winter Black Cherry cider. Enjoy your stay.

Travel tip: The pull of the Decoy Forest? B.I.G. feels it, too. When Cornelia Hornshaw stares into the Forest, she sees an image of the Fourth Power. But she still doesn’t know where it’s located. She’s heading there now, though. Will anybody stop her?

@Catastrophe--I know you're probably busy, but can you please help us out with the questions about the Shield? I'm confused--has it been found or not? Was the shield at the flower merely a glimpse of the future? Or was it real...?

Also, I sense a good plotline coming closer, Trixie...If someone finds out what you know...:D Heheh. I love dramatics.

Anywho, I know this RP is basically dead, but I don't mind. Lots of...uh, room here...to roleplay in. *voice echoes loudly in empty space* Yeah...*is totally not lonely* Innocent ;D

Kimi~

The guard pulls up a rickety old wooden chair and begins asking me all these questions, most of which I only halfway understand. "Are you here with the Resistance?" was one of the most frequently asked questions, phrased in a thousand different ways. This question raises more inside of me. Who's the Resistance? Why are they needed? Where am I? And, most of all, what's been happening in the world outside the Decoy Forest?

How much have I missed?

After a while, I get fed up with the interrogators and refuse to answer any questions. Instead, just to annoy them, I act as dumb as they treat me. C'mon, guys, just because we're prisoners doesn't mean we're not smart.

Pretty soon, we all get bored, the men pack up and leave, murmuring quietly among themselves, and I am left alone in my cell once more.

Now that I'm by myself, I can try to escape. These walls are making me claustrophobic--I've never been inside a real building before. But what I previously analyzed as an easily destroyable door proves to be more than just bars stuck in a basement drawing room's doorway--no matter what I try, I cannot escape.

Life in the Decoy Forest hones many of your skills--mistrust, dishonesty, control of one's emotions (or at least the ability to lock them down tight)--but one of the things it doesn't teach you is how to pick a lock. Let's face it, there aren't many reasons to have a key in the woods. I have a bit of instinct when it comes to escaping, but instinct doesn't help in a room specifically designed to keep criminals in.

Jail. The thought echoes through my brain. I've never been in a jail before. Now I know what it's like. I make a mental note never to get stuck in another one.

In frustration, I shout and throw myself against the bars over and over and over again--but my exertion bears no fruit. My fur is matted and patchy in many places, and is covered with a nasty grimy coating that makes me shiver to touch. My hands are in a similar condition, and by my feet lay traces of makeshift picks and other flimsy weapons that failed to aid in my escape.

As I go for another round of banging that's sure to do nothing but deepen the purple hue of the bruise on my shoulder, I feel a shudder ripple down my spine and I stop midway to the bars, momentarily distracted. The temperature has dropped at least thirty degrees. Thankfully, my fur keeps me warm. What's happening?

I hear a slithering sound as something starts rustling in the hallway. To my utter frustration, I cannot pinpoint its location. My ears are swiveling in all directions, unable to locate the echoey, frightening noise that fills my head with fear.

Fear! So this is what it feels like! No--there's no time for analyzing my emotions! I have to run--I have to get away! Where? There's nowhere to run.

I back up against the wall, my heart thumping like a frightened rabbit.

A sound like words in reverse reverberates through my ears and I can feel my morale being sucked out of me. What is happening? The world spins.

And then it's gone. The fear has passed, and I collapse on my knees, gulping the stale, icy air like it's a comfort blanket.

Wow.

I don't know how long I sit there, taking deep, calming breaths, but all too soon, a different guard whom I've never seen before clanks down the hallway. He has a look of authority about him. He stops in front of my cell, stares at me rather rudely for a few minutes, nods, then walks off the way he came. Something in his gaze chills me. What was that nod for? I wish I had some answers...

Star~~

After grabbing a meal at the Bog and Burrow Inn, I hired a carriage to take me north. I'd heard rumors about the Power of Hoof being at Jokull, and I was curious.

The carriage dropped me off in a small town known as  Qar Evi. In the center of the town square was a beautiful fountain featuring a glass sculpture of Sylvia. Water poured from the tip of her horn.

Market stalls had been set up in a circle around the fountain. Vendors called out cheerfully. It was like a tiny, safe version of the Mer flea market that lacked pirates selling magical drums.

One vendor in particular interested me. "Beautiful, uncut gems for sale!" They called. They were human , and wore their hair up in a bun. She'd painted her nails pink, and she had a full face of makeup. Her dress was beautiful and furlined. It was studded with gems.

I figured that perhaps I would be able to buy back some of the gems that thief had stoleb. But when I walked up to the stall, I saw something that made my breath catch in my throat. In the center of the gems was a beautiful and extremely rare Lone Star diamond.

"I'll take that diamond!" I exclaimex and pointed at it. The lady smiled at me. " Oh, yes, that diamond is certainly pretty.  One of my suppliers says it's a Lone Star diamond. I don't know what those are, but it sounds magical! "

"I'll give you fifty platinum for that," I blurt.

She looks surprised. "Well, then you can certainly have that!" I hand her the money and she gives me the diamond. I carefully carry it with me over to a bench down a sidestreet and examine it.

Looking at it, I begin to wish that it actually works. That would be amazing! I wish it wouls take me somewhere special, somewhere no other Dolor Felis has been before.

I feel a flow of power from the diamond, and when I look around, I realize it really did work.

I'm somewhere strange--somewhere I've never heard about, not even in legends.  I appear to still be in Qar Evi, but everything is so strange. For one, it's very dark, except in places where shadows should be. Instead of being dark, they glow.

This adventure has taken a whole new twist.

Death Hound~

I stumble across a little town, deserted, as usual. It may bustle in Kyngdom, but social interaction rarely belongs in Undershade. Suddenly, I hear footsteps a few blocks away. Odd. I climb onto a building, an easy feat, as one-story buildings only come up to my shoulder. I look around, into the streets below. Not finding anything, I step onto the next building over. The roof creaks. The footsteps stop, but I know where they're coming from. I look into an alley, and, to my immediate surprise, I find a Dolor Felis girl inspecting one of my tracks.

Star~~

I continue to walk, and I glance down at the ground. I crouch down, and examine what I have found--an enormous pawprint.

The pawprint is far larger than any I've seen. It's larger even than a woodland dragon pawprint, and woodland dragons are usually over seven feet tall. Whatever made this track is at least the size of a house, if not bigger.

There is a creaking noise from one of the rooftops. I stand back up and look towards the source of the noise--and then I freeze.

On the roof is a massive, dark-colored wolf with huge dragon-like wings.  It had large, white glowing eyes, which were focused on me.

However, I did notice that whatever this creature was, it didn't seem too horribly inclined to kill me. It seemed more curious, and surprised.

"Who are you, Dolor Felis, and how did you get here?" She asks, taking a small step closer to the edge of the roof.

Just a note, Hound doesn't speak well. She's picked up parts of different languages, but she can't string together more than three grammatically correct sentances.

Death Hound~

The girl straightens. I can see she is wary, maybe a little bit scared, but I admire her effort to hide it.

"I am Star, and I came with the help of this." She holds up a Lone Star Diamond, a gem I have not seen in many years. I step down from the building, a few meters away from Star. From wing to wing, I almost take up the entire alley. I lay down so I don't take up so much room.

"Why you come? In danger at Kyngdom?"

"Not that I could tell, at the moment." Star smiles.

"Well, what you do now?" The fear is beginning to melt from her eyes.

"I'm not sure... Hmm."

Star~~

I look back up at the wolf like being. "So who are you?" I ask.

" Me? I am Death Hound. Undseshade Canine. From here, " She says to me. "Was used by small king boy. But left."

" Small king boy? You mean... Catastrophe? "

"Yes. Sent me to Decoy Forest." Death Hound says.

" Huh. So... What is this place? "

"This place? Is Undershade Kyngdom." Death Hound explains. " Dark version of other land. Kyngdom. Very different. Opposites. "

"I can tell. Qar Evi is a bustling trade town back in Kyngdom. But it's empty here."

"So, what do now? You not answer before."

" Well...what are you going to do? Maybe I'll come with you. "

I'm really enjoying how this friendship is starting.

Death Hound~

"I not sure myself. Going try make friends." My ears perk and I smile. "You my friend?" Star seems to think for a second.

"Yes, I'll be your friend, Death Hound." At the sound of my name being used by another, I lay my ears flat against my skull. Instinctively, I cower. Old memories die hard. "What's wrong?" Star steps closer, reaching out to me.

"Please no call Death Hound. Just Hound good. My old mentor call me Death Hound. Bad mentor. Punish lots. Not much reward for skills learned."

"Aww... That's so sad. Well, Hound it is, then." Tentatively, Star pats me gently on the paw. I relax, and smile again.

"Me like Star. Star good friend... Stay here or go now?" I ask my new friend.

"Ummm, let's not go back to Kyngdom right now... The sight of you would knock quite a few people stone dead. Does night fall here?"

"Sorts. Not like Kyngdom night. Get lighter here. We go to Kyngdom when light-here-dark-there?"

"That's probably a good idea. Can't be more than an hour's time." Star looks up at the sky. A dark orb, in place of the sun, is close to the tops of the buildings, setting fast.

"Agreed. What we do until then?" Star grins.

"We could get to know each other a bit better, for one."

~

Why is it so much fun to role play with a verbally adolescent charrie? I'm thinking that, over a longer period of time, Hound could gain fluency in speech from Star? That'd be cute.

Oooh, that would be cute! That's a good idea.

Star~~

"So...what do in Kyngdom? Have job?" Hound asks.

"My mother and I travel Kyngdom. We're merchants. We sell mostly jewelry and rare gems and stuff. Is there anything in specific that you do?"

" Me? Was raised as weapon. By bad trainer first, then boy-king. Did not enjoy either. But now I just stay here. Mostly. "

"As a weapon? Do you have any powers?" I ask, curious .

"I have normal powers-and not-normal too. I fly, am strong, and I do special stuff too. Very unique things."

Hound~

"Strange." Star states. I nod.

"They not always easy to control. Sometime go hay-wire and destroy much. I not fond of when happens." I scowl. Star laughs. Her laugh is merry, but rough, like it's not used too often.

Star~~

Our conversation lasts a bit longer. But now the dark-sun has set and it is light here in Undershade Kyngdom.

"Go back now?" Hound asks. I nod.

She vanishes through a glowing shadow, and I hold my Lone Star Diamond. I concentrate on the town of Qar Evi.

When I open my eyes, Death Hound and I stand in a quiet street near the outskirts of the town.

"Go somewhere?" Hound asks.

"Sure. Where do you want to go?"
