Gryphon Encounters

Gryphon Encounters

I am compiling an account of our interrogations of the Gryphon to pass on one day to my successor. I am also collecting detailed descriptions of previous sightings of Gryphon activities--or those that it will admit to. I'm starting with a story of what happened to one of our allies as he questioned the Gryphon. I'm sorry, I didn't catch our ally's name, and he fainted before I got the whole story. But if you think you know what happened next, add your ideas in the comments and help me complete the story. Hopefully together we can learn more about what the Gryphon does and what goes through its head.

Partial Account of a Gryphon Encounter: "Our ally moved slowly as he entered the cave area cautiously, trying to be brave. But I could tell he was terrified just beneath the surface. He held the cypher in his hands, knowing this was the only way to communicate with the beast. He'd only used it a few times, so he fumbled around at first, sliding his fingers on the different buttons, trying to come up with the perfect first question. Should he ask something easy, like where it came from? Or should he ask the question he most wanted to ask--the question with the answer that terrified him most? He took a deep breath. Then breathed out. He looked the creature straight in the eye. And said...

Part 3!

I trek through the woods, exhausted. I've been searching for Claaws for hours. I scrape the B.I.G's symbol off of my locket with a knife and I stop at a pond to wipe the words that my father wrote off of the locket. I wipe off every word but forgive me. I finsish doing it and turn around to see the fox. "I'm Artemis," the fox says, and shushes me before I ask what she's doing here. "Icicle PowerFriend, you are special. I only sense weak magic in you but you have a good heart," the fox says. I bow my head to her. "However, you are young. And so many imperfections..." I blush. "Nevermind that. Now repeat after me," Artemis says. "I pledge myself to the protection of the creatures of each power, no matter how mortal I may be. I willfully choose to become a guardian of them, and will guard them untill I die," Artemis says. I repeat her words and realize I'm glowing blue again. "I witness this act," Artemis says.

"Congratulations," she says, then she slips like a shadow through the trees. I stare after her, then keep walking after a few quiet minutes. "I just became a guardian..." I think. "I just became a guardian.." I stand there for  a few minutes, quietly reflecting, untill I move on. I walk untill I reach the mountains. Mountains must be favorable for the creature of the power of the wing. I find handholds and begin to climb.

It's just like climbing a tree...Only much much harder. Once I reach the peak I'm too exhausted to do anything but sit in the snow. I'm so tired I don't see the Gryphon coming.

It swoops down and sits beside me. "I felt it...you just became a guardian. Congratulations," the Gryphon says. I stroke his feathers. When I touch him, I glow blue again. "Why are you here?" I ask. "Well, you're one of my favorite humans. Probably because your only power makes me like you. And also, to warn you."

To warn you... I feel the cold of the snow I'm sitting in. "What is there to warn me of?" I reply, slowly. "Claaws. She won't be as kind to you. She doesn't like humans. Well, neither do I, but like I said, you're a Guardian and an exception," the Gryphon says. "So, you're not going to kill me?" I ask. The Gryphon laughs. "The thought intrigues me, and amuses me. But no. I haven't enjoyed speaking human for a very long time..." He spreads his wings and takes flight. I stare out into the sky that he vanished into... I stare untill I stop glowing and am literally left in the dark.

I follow the girl as she walks on top of the mountain, climbing in some parts where the ground is less flat. I use my sharp artic fox teeth to open my bag, then take notes. The girl is so clumsy... I write. All humans are idiots. I watch the girl go back to the forest and sigh. I prepare a net.     All humans are going DOWN fur and feathers 4ever ~Eli <3

Just to clear this up, Artemis and I are NOT the same. Artemis is a reddish colored fox, while I am white and an arctic fox. ~Eli <3

Crowntallon woke up to the sound of screaming and clashing. She looked around and saw her mother with other animals that she could not identify in the dark. Suddenley, with a gust of wind, they were all gone. Crowntallon hid behind arock, not knowing if her mother would come back, or if she would be taken away also. As she laid rigid in the cold, she heard a soft Hoot! and turned around. It was and owl. "Do not be afraid, little Gryphon!" it said.

I'm sorry for taking up SO MUCH space in the CB. The rest of my story will not be posted on the Gryphon Encounters thread.

I walk through the mountain. If I can't go after Claaws...what do I do? I continue walking untill the net falls on me. Then the Artic Fox steps out, and sprinkles some kind of dust on me. Everything goes black.

NOTE: The character is able to turn into a fox.

I darted through the trees, trying not to lose sight of the spark of blue light. I had been following it for hours now, into parts of the forest I hadn't known about. I ran after the blue light, leaping over massive roots that came up to my back, dodging low hanging vines that blocked my path. At last I came into a clearing. The spark of light vanished.Pivoting slowly, I took in my surroundings. A cave rose up in front of me, like a giant's mouth. At the entrance to the cave where several animals stood. Strangely, they were encased in what seemed to be more blue light. I looked into the depths of the cave, and there I saw the spark of light, waiting for me. Gathering my courage, I stepped inside. The spark made it's way down to the floor of the cave, and thats when I saw them. Human footprints. Seeing them, I shifted into human form. A small girl with an orange-and-white cloak where a fox had been moments ago.I looked back down at the footprintsThey led further into the cave. Finally, I came upon another human, lying there. Their eyes flickered open. Scared, I shifted back into a fox. They rubbed their head and sat up.

Icicle Soul....why does that name sound so familiar? No! It can't be!

Icy, I was adopted by wolves because my mother left me in the forest. I was raised by a rare wolf that can speak the human language. I have a pendant around my neck, and the note on the back illuminates on the ground, and it says something about you being my sister!

I'm pretty sure I'm younger than you (I was raised by wolves, who can tell?), and I think our mother is in danger.

What's going on????

I run from the B.I.G. and spot a cave. Shelter. Is my only thought.

The pain felt as if it was tearing me apart. BIG found me, BIG actually found me! I thought. I finaly got a clue as to where my family is and they shot a bullet in my side! As I kept running I realized that I would have to get to some shelter. I soon saw a big cave. It could be dangerous, but I have to. I could die if I don't. I thought. I lept with all my might into the cave. Too late. I realized there might be hostile creatures in the cave.

As I slowly walked to the animal I could feel that it was peaceful to animals. It said to me: "Who are you." Tell it the truth. I thought. "I am Claire, a human who doesn't want to kill you."I said. "I am the Gryphon and I don't trust you. You said you were human. Why do you look like a dog?" It said. "I am a shape-shifter." I said. "I promise I am not hostile. You can kill me if I ever try to kill you."I say. "I don't trust humans, yet you have a peaceful aura that tells me you are in need. "He says.  I was shot on my back by BIG."  "No not that, it has something to do with family."He said. I bit my lip. "I have been looking for my family for a while." Your aura is very magical. Wait, he said magical. I thought. "I have a magical aura? "Yes it is very strong. It is definitely from a power." "No way."I said. "That must be a mistake." Though as I went through my head it made sense.

Wings flashed and claws scratched. I stood watching in a close redwood tree. It's sad what greed can do to a person.

Plague me not, reptile. You are all as thorns in my talon, rankling but insignificant. Leave me to my rest.

Sssorry. I...did I wake you?

I sleep fitfully in this realm. If you had not woken me, the silence of the air would have.

That'sss right. The Power of Wing called you...wherever you come from, it mussst have been full of wind. You...you misss the wind, don't you?

The wind is in my bones, my sinews, in the essence of my being. Being without it is like the deepest of poisons.

Holy sssun. I don't...I don't sssuppose I can argue with that.

Nor can any mundane animal.

Forgive the rudenesss, but what do you mean, mundane?!

There is no magic in your blood. Your ancestors were the mighty quetzalcoatl, in a high and far-off time, but that time is long since ended. Your kind have fallen from grace.

...What'sss that sssuppossssed to mean?!

There are animals who still remember- seek them out, listen and learn. History lurks just beneath the present, like the skin beneath your scales. Perhaps if you recall your roots, learn the songs of leaf and mud and rain, like I know the songs of the wind...maybe then will I have named you mundane in error.

I don't underssstand. Tell me more.

Find a story of your kind first. Hear it, tell it to others until it chants in your every breath. Then come back to me, and speak to me of more.

I...I sssee. Farewell, S'syuassshath.

Pardon?

It'sss a word of my kind. It means teacher, patron, wise one- the exact connotations are untranslatable.

I thank you for thus naming me. Farewell, path-seeker.

Farewell.

I stand still. Completely frozen at the sight of a person I hoped never to see again. My brother.  Amidst the crumbling ruins of a place I never once called my home, for reasons I couldn't explain, but now I can. My brother, Martin Miller, 15, is here. I used to hope I would never see him again, but that was a hope that would never come true. He was a Snake-Shifter. And he thought I was trash. I realize that it's not about winning here. It's about escaping the crumbling ruins. That's just what I do. I race away, sometimes on foot, others on wing. But I escape. And I see the Gryphon. The creature that destroyed the BIG headquarters. I cautiously approach. It seems to sniff me, then bows. I creep closer. It speaks in a deep, booming voice I have not heard.

"What brings you here, little one?" Its tone is not harsh, but kind and almost, fatherly.

"Please sir," I whisper, "I mean you no harm. I merely wish to leave the land and find my friend. She promised to meet me today, but I haven't seen hide not hair of her and with the, um, danger of collapsed buildings I'm afraid-" I stop as I see Katie, lying unconscious near the Gryphon's feet.

"You also have a brother in these parts, but he does not care for you," the Gryphon speaks again. Suddenly shouts come from outside the cave. The Gryphon pushes Katie towards me.

"Take your friend and go," he says. "But first," he removes a locket from somewhere inside his wing, "take this, open it when you are safe." I take the locket, and slowly lift Katie up. I leave the cave, and go in search of a safe place to rest and hide.
