Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

One day you're lounging in your room, sprawled across your bed, reading a book. It's getting hot in the room, but you barely notice, so engaged are you in your novel. You’re just at the part where the hero is emerging from the vast wasteland into a luscious city of overgrowth and magnificent chalky pillars. You sigh, immersed in the exquisite descriptions of the author. If only it were like that here… All of a sudden the heat seems unbearable, and you slide off the bed, tossing the book down on your sheets. Walking over to your window, you unlatch it and heave up the pane, letting the cool air rush in. You sigh blissfully, relieved of the stuffy summer heat. From downstairs, you hear your mother call you. Reluctant to leave, you slide your window shut and go to her. She’s at the table, sorting through a pile of letters. Without glancing up, she hands you one. You take it hesitantly, unsure of what to think of it.

The letter’s envelope is cool and heavy, made of a silky parchment. It's addressed to you, but you don't remember sending any letters recently. Upon opening it, you find that the letter inside of made of the same paper. Inscribed on it, written in glittering silver ink, are the words:

Hello, my dearest Chatterboxer!

I have written to you to invite upon a most grandiose adventure! I have recently acquired goggles (perhaps you’ve heard of the kind-- the Oculus Rift is one brand?) that will allow you to see the world though new eyes! To let you gaze upon lands far away! But on this undertaking, I do believe you’ll be doing much more than just seeing this places…

Pack your bags and prepare yourself to begin the adventure! Eleven lucky CBers will be allowed to participate in this wondrous adventure! And don’t hold a worry in mind, of course you may take a companion. No more than two, I ask of you, though, for we do have rather small quarters.

Mysteriously yours,

Inscrutibilius

P.S. This journey will be tragedy-free. Although, if any injuries occur (nothing more, I do hope), I’m afraid I won’t be taking responsibility. Once again, though, harbor no worry, for we do have a reliable source at a base who will be able to send help and resources.

P.P.S. Please do forgive my verbosity. I rather enjoy using large words.

~~

You may begin to guess me as soon as you join! Have fun!

A note: I don’t have an excellent idea of what all the AEs look or act like, so if you’d like to to be a more accurate telling, please post something with their appearances and personalities. Otherwise, I’ll be going off my own instincts.

Day One

“This is it?” groped September. “I thought it was supposed to be some kind of world tour. And where are my AEs?” Next to her stood Daisy, a similar frown on her face. If you’re wondering why, this was all because they had received a fabulous letter entailing exciting adventures and a mysterious name, Inscrutibilius. But all that was presented before them now was a plain gray building, somewhat resembling a warehouse. Aquina walked up next to them, clutching a satchel bulging with books.

“Is this it?” she asked skeptically. “I was expecting something more… you know… adventuresome.” September nodded in agreement. “Also, do you know where Pellucid and Wingnut are? I haven’t seen them since I left. I’m a little worried…”

“I noticed that Bombett and Burt were gone, too,” said Daisy, a note of panic in her voice. While the girls were discussing this, the rest of the group arrived, until only Rey was yet to arrive. Just when the Riddler was about to suggest going to find her, an electric blue motorcycle screeched up, with a panting figure atop it.

“Hhhh… so… sorry! Alarm clock… didn’t go…. Off!” Rey gasped, scrambling off her ride. “Are we… ready?” As soon as Rey regained control of her breathing, the group entered the building.

It was as plain on the inside as it was on the outside, merely a large gray room, though there were windows with golden sunlight streaming in through them. Kestrel looked around suspiciously. “Where’s--”

“Greetings, my dearest travelers!” barked a loud voice from just behind them. September spun around, her heart pounding in her chest as she looked at the figure who stood before her. There, grinning wildly, was someone who September assumed was Inscrutibilius. They were tall, taller than almost everyone here, and wore a tunic made of silvery white material, with white leggings underneath. They had a plumed hat, the feather white, that was jauntily cocked at and angle on their head. In the second September saw them standing still, she saw that their eyes were glittering silver. However, the next second they moved away, their boots clicking on the ground. “Hello, and welcome to a most amazing experience! A most grand tour! A most wonderful adventure. A-- well, hm, I think you get the idea,” Inscrutibilius finished, scratching their ear.

“Hey, um… Inscu--Inscru--Inscrutibilius! Inscrutibilius, where are my AEs?” interrupted Daisy. Inscrutibilius looked embarrassed for a second, and they sighed heavily.

“Unfortunately, it seems… the AEs have become seperated from us for the moment. Kip is arranging a portal they can travel through to here. They’ll arrive shortly, I’m sure. Terribly sorry.” Daisy bit her, still looking worried.

“...Well, where is it?” asked Aquina, standing next to September. “I mean, the trip and stuff.” Inscrutibilius turned to her, eyes wide.

“But what is this? Did you not receive the proper information?” Aquina looked confused, but Inscrutibilius continued on. “This is merely the base! The center of operations! Goodness, no, we’d never get anywhere with this place. What the real part is, the most fabulous and special part is, are these.” Inscrutibilius held up a pair of goggles that mostly just looked like ski goggles. “This the newest advancement in virtual technology, developed nowhere else than in Down to Earth! Put them on, and the virtual becomes the physical!”

“Hold on a second,” said Daisy, her hand in the air. Inscrutibilius pointed to her, and she said, “Down to Earth? Does that mean you know about CB?” Inscrutibilius laughed brightly.

“Oh, I’m more than just knowing about the CB. In fact, I’m a CBer just like you.”

“Who?!” said Daisy, gasping.

“It’s not important,” replied Inscrutibilius, turning away. “You can guess if you really want to… BUT! You’re not here for my name, are you now? You have come for the trip!” With a flourish, Inscrutibilius revealed three boxes full of the same goggles, in shades of either red or blue. Slowly moving around the group, Inscrutibilius handed one to each person.

“Um… what are we supposed to do with these?” asked Shadowmoon, the goggle in her hand.

“Simply place them over your eyes,” replied Inscrutibilius cheerfully. “Also, let’s see here…” Shadowmoon could no longer see Inscrutibilius, just hear their voice. “Where is it, where is it… ah! Here! *hem* Dear CBers, where would you like to go first? We have both of the Poles, the desert, the rainforest, and many more to choose from! Yes, Kestrel?”

“Can we go to a mountain?” Kestrel asked.

“Why, of course!” Inscrutibilius chirped.

“How are we going to go anywhere?” Shadowmoon whispered to Aquina, who was next to her. “We’re just in a warehouse with goggles on our faces. How would we--” Her words were cut off as a lifting sensation filled her body, and wind swooshed around her.

“You may remove your goggles!” she heard Inscrutibilius say. Suddenly gasps erupted from all around her, both shocked, excited, and terrified. Hesitantly, feeling a slight cold nip at her skin, she removed the goggles and froze once she did.

“Welcome to the great Rocky Mountains!” Inscrutibilius crowed, the wide expanise of the mountains towering behind them.
