Chatterbox: Pudding's Place

You pull your

You pull your jacket tighter around you as you enter your local library. The March wind is still brisk, and your cheeks are pink from the cold. It seems that nobody else is in the library, so you commandeer your favorite armchair and sit down with a sigh. As you rummage around in your bag, looking for whatever homework you forgot to do, you hear a thud coming from one of the bookshelves. You look around again, but other than the librarian, you don't see anyone. You stand up warily and make your way to where you think the noise came from. All you see is a book on the ground. You frown and pick it up, wondering how it could have fallen. You examine the front, back and spine of the book, and it strikes you that there is no title, or anything at all, for that matter. You open the book, and out slides a letter. You place the book back on the shelf and pick up the letter. The envelope is a shimmering gold, with no address or stamp. You go to open the envelope (it couldn't hurt, right?) and notice that it appears to have been already opened, but resealed. You tear it open and pull out a paper- it's creased and torn in a few places, but the golden script can still be clearly read. It says:

Salutations, dear CBer! We would like to invite you to stay at the Golden Palace Hotel for your wonderful, relaxing vacation. There will be games, food, hiking, food, gardens, food, swimming- did I mention food? The staff and I will be there to make your stay as comfortable as possible. We hope you decide to join us!

Part One

~

Bluebell turned the letter over in her hands, examining it yet again. She looked around the parking lot of the library, feeling that she must be missing something. The letter hadn’t said where they were to be picked up, so her best guess had been outside the library. Now, standing there with no one else in sight, doubt was worming it’s way into her head. She leaned over her bag to pull out the envelope, see if maybe she’d missed something. When she raised her head again, she jumped back, squeaking in surprise. Right in front of her was the face of a golden steed. Once she could breathe again, she stepped back and saw that the face of the steed was indeed attached to a body, and not only that, but there were four of them, all nearly identical, their coats gleaming with a metallic sheen. The horses, by extension, were attached to a golden carriage, and a large one at that.

“Whatcha waitin’ for, kid, an invitation?” barked a voice from the carriage. “Well, actually yeah, I s’pose. You do need one a them.” Bluebell saw a figure seated at the front, holding the reins. A man? No, not quite. The figure was short, plump, and had what Bluebell was sure were autumn-colored leaves in place of hair. He shook his head irritably. “Yeah, yeah, I’m a wood nymph, stop gawkin’ already. You got an invitation or no?”

“Invitation? Oh, uh, yeah, here,” stammered Bluebell, holding up the letter.

“Well then, get in! I ain’t got all day!” barked the nymph, prompting Bluebell to scurry over to the door and step up into the carriage.

It was surprisingly roomy inside the carriage, and there were three other people already seated inside.

“Hello!” said one, pushing a lock of brown hair behind her ear. “I think you were our last stop. I’m Dusk Sky- call me Dusk.”

“Nice to meet you, Dusk,” said Bluebell. “My name’s Bluebell.”

Dusk nodded. “Bluebell! Nice. This is my AE, Alice-” she gestured to the blonde girl sitting beside her, who gave a shy little wave, “-and that’s Hollyshock!” She pointed to the other girl in the carriage.

“Please, call me Holly,” said the girl. “It’s nice to meet you, Bluebell.”

“Likewise,” Bluebell replied. They sat in awkward silence for the next few minutes as the carriage gradually sped up. Dusk rubbed her hands together in anticipation.

“I can’t wait to get there, can you?” she asked, directing the question to the rest of the carriage at large. Holly smiled.

“I’m pretty excited. I’d never heard of it before I got the letter, had either of you?” Dusk and Bluebell shook their heads.

“No, I hadn’t,” said Bluebell. “I figured I’d give it a try, though! I mean, worst case scenario, I go home.” Dusk nodded, then looked around.

“Are we slowing down?” she asked.

“I think so,” responded Holly. “I guess we’re here!”

Indeed, the carriage soon slowed to a halt. Dusk reached for the handle of the door, but it opened before she got there. The nymph held the door open for the CBers and AE as they exited the carriage. Once they were all out, he shut the door and climbed back up onto the carriage, grimacing.

“I’m gettin’ too old for this,” he grumbled, then nodded at the CBers and flicked the reins. As the carriage drove away, the small group took in their surroundings. There was a set of large, ornate golden gates, already open, with a lush courtyard just inside. Beyond that loomed the Golden Palace itself, shining in the afternoon sun. The group walked through the gates, and found that there were already people in the courtyard, chattering away and looking at the scenery.

“Hey, look!” someone said. “It’s the last group.” As if on cue, the doors to the palace burst open. On the threshold stood a barefooted girl, with curly locks of blonde hair, golden eyes and golden freckles dotting her cheeks, wearing a bright yellow dress. She beamed at the assembled CBers, and spread out her arms.

“Welcome, everyone!” she said. “As I’m certain you know, you’re now at the Golden Palace Hotel! My name is Goldie, I’m the palace keeper of this lovely estate. It’s wonderful to meet you all, and it’s my pleasure to invite you all to come in!”

The CBers followed Goldie into the palace, marveling at the lavish entrance hall. They all spoke amongst themselves, until Goldie called over the chatter.

“We’ll start with room assignments! Come, this way!” She led them through a few hallways and up a flight of stairs, then stopped in front of a door with a purple gem laid into it. “This is the Amethyst Room. The occupants of this room will be…” She pulled a piece of paper out of the pocket of her dress and read aloud. “Ahem. Gracia, Strawberri, Dolphin, Bluebell, Hollyshock, and Evergreen.” Everyone nodded, and Bluebell and Holly smiled at each other, both glad to already know someone. Goldie led the group down the hallway a little bit, passing by a door with a pink and green stone. “That’s the Tourmaline Room,” she explained. “It’s, ah, undergoing repairs at the moment, so no one will be staying in there.” Next, she led them to a door with a deep blue-colored gem. “Right, this is the Tanzanite Room. It’s occupants will be Dusk Sky, Agent Winter, Pancake Willows, Alexandria, Alice, and Sirfire.” More nodding. Goldie led them around the corner, where they found a slightly smaller door with a light blue gem. “This is the Sapphire Room, which is where Vixen, Rigel, and Xena- our Captchas- will be staying.” Goldie clapped her hands together. “Alright, we’ll be having our official welcoming dinner later tonight, but for now, why don’t you all settle into your rooms and meet your roommates? I’ll see you all later this evening!”

Part Two

~

The CBers assigned to the Amethyst Room entered to find simple four-poster beds with shimmery lilac-colored satin hangings, deep purple comforters, and lilac embroidered pillows. In the center of the room was a fuzzy lavender carpet, and the walls were painted berry purple. There was a small dark wood table next to each bed, on top of each of which sat a lamp and a small card with each CBer’s name written in neat calligraphy. Everyone found their own bed and put down their luggage.

In the Tanzanite Room, the CBers found three bunk beds, each with a violet comforter, dark blue walls, and a grey ceramic tile floor that, upon closer inspection, turned out to be heated. There was no indication as to whose bed was whose, so there was a mad scramble to claim either a top or bottom bunk, which resulted in a few matches of ‘rock paper scissors’. Once that was sorted out and all of the luggage was put away, the CBers headed back out into the hallway, where they found everyone else.

“So,” said Agent Winter, clapping her hands together. “Why don’t we all start with introductions? Who wants to go first? Great, I will! My name’s Agent Winter.” They went around the circle, each person saying their name. Once introductions were finished, they decided to split up- divide and conquer, per say. Gracia wanted to explore the palace a bit, so she, Strawberri, Emekittycon, Pancake, Sirfire, and Alexandria took off in one direction. Agent Winter, Bluebell, Dusk Sky, Alice, Dolphin, Evergreen, and Hollyshock decided that they were hungry, and set off to try to find the banquet hall, and maybe see if they could get a head start on that welcoming dinner.

They wandered around aimlessly for a little while, making their way through countless hallways before concluding that they were hopelessly lost. Agent Winter looked around, trying to figure out where they could possibly be.

“Hello?” she called out cautiously. “Um, Goldie? Anyone?”

“Yes?” a voice behind the group responded. They all jumped, but calmed down for the most part when they saw that it was only Goldie. She grinned at them. “How can I help you guys?”

“Where did you come from?” asked Dolphin. “Were you following us or something?” Goldie laughed.

“Of course not! I happened to be passing by. Now, what did you need?” The CBers looked at one another and shrugged, seeming to accept her story.

“We were looking for the banquet hall,” said Bluebell.

“Oh, I can help you find that!” said Goldie. “Okay, just go down this hallway, take two rights turns, a left, a right, a left, a left again, go up the stairs, down the slide, and it’ll be diagonally to your left. Now I have to go take care of palace-y things, so I’ll see you in a little bit! Good luck!” Goldie skipped off.

Agent Winter decided to take the lead, since she thought she remembered the directions correctly. She led the group down the hallway, turned right twice, then left, then right, then left, then paused unsure of which way to go. Goldie’s directions, along with the palace itself, were quite disorienting.

“Another left,” Evergreen supplied, and off they went again, up a steep staircase that led onto a balcony connecting to an enormous yellow slide.

“Awesome!” said Dolphin, and she was the first one down the slide. The other CBers followed, with shouts of excitement. Hollyshock hung back a little.

“I… I don’t really like heights…” she said, but no one seemed to have heard her. Alice was disappearing down the slide in front of her, and she didn’t want to be left behind, so she slid down the spiraling slide, eyes shut firmly the entire time.

At the bottom of the slide, the group found the other CBers, who had gone exploring, waiting for them.

“We found the slide when we were walking around,” said Sirfire. “It led down here to the banquet hall, so we figured we’d wait for you to show up.” They all walked into the banquet hall together, and found Goldie waiting at a long wooden table.

“Glad you found it okay!” she called. “Come, sit down! The food should be out any minute!” The CBers all sat down, and the sound of scraping chairs filled the room. Once they were all seated, doors on the other side of the banquet hall burst open, and platters of food floated into the room, settling down on the table. It was an unexpected way of bringing out their dinner, but exciting nonetheless. Everyone helped themselves, and chatter broke out. Down at one end of the table, Pancake was talking animatedly to Emekittycon while shoving pie into her mouth at an alarming rate. Em laughed at something she said, and Pancake laughed with her. Then she coughed. She coughed again.

“Are you alright?” asked Em, still smiling. But Pancake was no longer smiling. She continued coughing, falling out of chair and clutching at her throat.

“She’s choking!” Alexandra exclaimed, and Goldie hurried to her side. Pancake’s face was turning red, and Goldie quickly called for a stretcher. After a moment, someone in a palace uniform ran in with one, and they lifted Pancake onto it. As she was carried out of the banquet hall, a hush fell over the CBers.
